Weekly report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

Beautiful weather once again this week and anglers are in their element with us here at Cashel.

During the week we had the privilege of hosting a group of mature students from the North West College of Further and Higher Education, Strand Road Campus, Derry.  These students are in their 2nd year of BTEC National Certificate Countryside Management Course.  As part of the course, they have a module on Fishery Management and part of this was held at Cashel Trout Fishery.  I gave a brief introduction followed by a question and answer session.  Following this they had fly fishing instruction for a couple of hours by APGAI, Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors, Mr Patrick Trotter and Mr Ronnie Campbell accompanied by their college lecturer, Mr Art Niven and education officer from the Loughs Agency, Mr Michael Cosgrove.

The students who took part were Amy Fowler, Tony McCloskey, Noel Doherty, Terry Frize, Raymond Brennan, Declan Cairns, Paul McWilliams and Shane Rolston.

Cashel Trout FisheryLater on in the week we had newcomer, Arturas Povilaitis (Lithuania) who did very well using the ace of spades banking two lovely trout.  Limavady’s father and son Danny and Melvin Martin released two each also which took damsels and dries.  Andrew Logan (Dungiven) released four which took suspender olives while Derry’s Paul Ford and friend Paul Cox (Shrewsbury, England) banked a total of eight trout with two home for tea which weighed almost 4lb and fell to the suspender buzzers.  Aidy Askin (Derry) released nine trout which took blae and black wet flies and suspender olives.  Dungiven’s John Hasson released an amazing seventeen trout over two short days which took the wee f-fly and damsels.  Limavady’s Brian Mc Kay and George Kealey released three in total but gave up because it was too windy.  Lavey’s Pearse Mc Gill used dries and nymphs to bank five trout while Martin Bradley released three trout in a couple of hours using the blob and a dry.  Magherafelt’s Tony Armstrong and Kevin Hurl had a few touches too.

Well done to all!

River Licences are on sale at Cashel Trout Fishery.
