Report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

Saturday the 24th past was the day of our long awaited Annual Competition.  Just like every other year it was a brilliant, successful and very enjoyable day.  Anglers travelled from as far away as England, Fermanagh and Donegal to join the locals in the quest to win the Cashel Trout Fishery Annual Perpetual Cup plus many other great trophies and prizes.

Michael (Vickey) Mc Closkey kindly sponsored the Cup many years ago along with the trophies which the anglers get to keep.  Unfortunately on this occasion Michael was not able to attend our presentations but his daughters Clare and Tres did the honours instead.

There were three prizes awarded.

1st Prize (Heaviest single fish) 11lb 8¼ozs, Alfie Shepard from Kilrea

2nd Prize (Heaviest bag of fish) 16lb 5¾ozs, Conor Mc Cusker from Enniskillen

3rd Prize (Heaviest runner up bag of fish) 13lb 14¾ozs, Brian Duffy from Ballykelly

There were a total of thirty-eight trout killed which fell to GH daddies, leadheads, buzzers and CDC’s.

Other catches included one at 10lb 3ozs which was brought to the bank by James Mc Feely (Derry).  Conor Mc Cusker (Enniskillen) had a big one at 7lb 11ozs.  Brian Duffy (Ballykelly) had one of 7lb 7ozs.  Young Brian Donnelly (Limavady) bagged one of 3lb 3ozs while Mark Mc Clelland from Enniskillen had on of 2lb 8ozs.  Pat Nicell Jnr (Buncrana) bagged four which weighed 8lb 1oz while Billy Stevenson (England) released one back into the lake.  Stephen Woods (Ballybofey, Donegal) bagged four weighing 7lb 8ozs.  Our youngest competitor, 14-year-old Zarrin Martin (Limavady) had a challenging day bagging one near the 2lb mark.  John Long also from Limavady had a trout of similar size while Dungiven’s Martin Bradley bagged the quota of five weighing 12lb 1ozs.  Chris Dougan (Dungiven) bagged three trout weighing 5lb 7ozs.  John Hasson (Dungiven) chose to release his half a dozen trout which fell to CDC’s and f-flies.  Mark Boyce (Dungiven) also chose to release his two trout which fell to black dries.

Many thanks to Seamus, my husband and our wains for their continued help and support with our ‘big’ day.

We are now stock a splendid variety of fly and spinning tackle at Cashel Fishing Lodge.

We are now taking group bookings for any angling club or corporate groups interested in a fun day.  Catering facilities are available in the adjacent Cashel Fishing Lodge.
