Over 800 Rare Crucian Carp are being stocked in three fisheries in Cheshire and Tameside this week (Wednesday 21 November, 2007) to help revive this endangered species in the wild.

The ponds, which have been specially chosen to help the fish flourish are, Norcott Pool near Warrington, Whatcroft Pool, Northwich and Stonepit Reservoir, Hyde, Tameside.

Paul Bennett, Environment Agency Fisheries Officer, said: “By stocking these fish we hope that their numbers will once again begin to thrive in the wild.”

This restocking project is an example of how the Environment Agency invests the money generated from rod licence sales back into improving angling and protecting and boosting rare species.

Anyone aged over 12 who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England, Wales or the Border Esk in Scotland is required to have a rod licence by law. For more information log on to www.environment-agency.gov.uk/rodlicence or call 0845 506 506.
