EFTTA lobbyist Jan Kappel has played a major role in the development of an official European Code of Practice for recreational fisheries.

Between November 5th and 6th in The Netherlands, Jan was invited to attend a two-day workshop organized by the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Together with some 30 other selected stakeholders – ranging from academia, national and international fisheries bodies and non-governmental organisations – stakeholders were invited to develop, refine and agree upon a European Code of Practice for Recreational Fisheries.

The workshop agreed on a draft code, which is now being fine tuned for endorsement next year.

Jan Kappel said: “I expect this code to add positively to the promotion and clout of recreational angling and sportfishing and hope very much that EIFAC will adopt the code next year.”
