Bolton Lads and Girls Club has received funding and council permission to assist in the improvement of the fishing ponds in Queens Park.

Once work is completed the ponds, which have had a number of fishing clubs in recent years, will be maintained by the club and used recreationally by young club members.  Members of the public will be able to purchase permits to fish from the club reception on Spa Road.

Bolton Lads and Girls Club and Bolton Council will be working in partnership with the Environment Agency and the Cleaner Greener Fund, both of which will provide £5,000 in funding for the project in addition to the contribution from the Heritage Lottery Fund which will pay for the de-silting of the main fishing pond.

Graham Brandwood, residential development coordinator at Bolton Lads and Girls Club, said: “We were approached by the council’s Greenspace section to see whether we’d be interested in taking over the lease of the ponds. We are pleased to have come to an agreement to work in partnership with the council and other agencies, and we’re excited about giving our young members the chance to take part in a project of this nature and learn about a new hobby.”
