Events from Flora Locale

Conservation groups, land managers and ecologists involved in creating and maintaining wet grasslands, ponds and WET systems are invited to attend events run by Flora locale, the charity that promotes the restoration of wild plants for biodiversity, landscapes and people.

Pond creation and conservation runs in Oxfordshire on 12 July, 2011, Planning and creating good quality ponds in Blackburn on 14 July, 2011,  Pond creation and management in Hampshire on 14 September, 2011.  These one day workshops demonstrate how ponds have an almost immediate effect on local biodiversity, give practical guidance on siting ponds, the use of clay liners, which plants to use, and how to control alien species. These events also cover basic pond ecology and construction techniques, and guidance on planning and legal considerations.

Constructed wetland systems on 19 July, 2011, near Ledbury in Herefordshire will focus on the planting for a WET system of waste water purification, habitat creation and biodiversity enhancement. This system uses planted willow, native marginals and water plants to create habitats rich in insects, birdlife and colour. The event includes site visits to see successful water purification systems in a variety of settings.

Restoring a lowland river on 20 September near Hungerford, West Berkshire will visit two stretches of grazed common land “before” and “after restoration on one of Britain’s most important chalk rivers. Discussions will include riverbank grazing impact, recreational disturbance. over-widening and measures to restore the in-river and bankside habitats.
