Environment Agency News Release

Dating back to the time of the ancient Romans, fly fishing has become one of the most popular and enjoyable forms of fishing enjoyed by anglers throughout Britain.  For those who fancy learning the ropes, or rather how to cast a line, taster sessions are being offered on the 20 and 21 August, 2008.  The Environment Agency has teamed up with the Get Hooked on Fishing Charity to offer a fantastic free fly fishing session for the whole family at Llyn Clywedog in mid Wales.  The man-made reservoir, which can hold up to 50,000 megalitres of water is home to an abundance of brown and rainbow trout and is the perfect location for those who are looking to get hooked onto a new sport.

The event is totally free, so there is no need to worry about having to open up the wallet before being allowed to tackle this popular pastime. Participants will also be provided with all of the required equipment to help turn them into skilled anglers.

Before you start wading out into the reservoir at Llyn Clywedog armed with a rod and a vague idea of what to do, there will be instructors on hand to help even the most inexperienced  anglers learn how to sight, hook, play and land those wriggly characters.

Perhaps going onto the lake and trying to catch those tricky trout are not your thing.  There is also the opportunity to come along and try your hand at fly tying at the Angel Hotel in Llanidloes. A time old tradition involving the production of an artificial fly to catch fish, it is not only a popular hobby for many, it is also seen as a great money saving strategy for fly fishers.  If you don’t know your Royal Wulff from your Coachmen, there will be free demonstrations and everyone will then get the chance to tie their own fly.

Fisheries, Recreation and Biodiversity Technical Officer Claire Quigley said of the sessions: “This is a wonderful opportunity for families and people of all ages to get outside in the fresh air and try out or improve their fly fishing skills in a beautiful location.“

If you are interested in taking part in either the fly fishing of the fly tying, then drop Dallas Davies a line after 7pm on 01686 412 644 to book a space.
