Youngsters in Cornwall and West Devon can look forward to some outdoor fun this summer at a series of free angling events organised by the Environment Agency. All equipment, including tackle, is supplied and any youngster lucky enough to catch a trout can take it home!

Qualified instructors will attend each ‘Get Hooked’ session providing newcomers with advice and tuition. The first event, an introduction to coarse fishing for younger children, will take place at Porth Reservoir near Newquay on August 7. This will be followed, throughout the summer, by another five events at local lakes and reservoirs.

Older children (aged 10 – 16) will have a chance to try their hand at trout fishing at Stithians Lake near Redruth and Siblyback Lake near Liskeard towards the end of August. There will also be a series of Family Fun Days featuring trout fishing taster sessions for all the family with additional attractions including face painting, balloon modelling and children’s play areas.

The events are part of a national initiative to encourage people to take up the sport. All the sessions are free and on the day participants will not need to buy a rod licence. Numbers for the children’s events are limited so it is essential to book in advance. For more details including a booking form call Sally Mitchell at the Environment Agency on 01208 265012.
