The trout fishing season starts on 15 March and the roving angler scheme for the Eden Valley; Go Wild in Eden, is back for 2008, giving anglers exclusive access to 28 beats of wild brown trout and grayling fishing.
As well as providing some very challenging fishing, Go Wild enables anglers to enjoy some of Cumbria’s most unspoiled scenery. As the beats are on private land, accessible only with permission from the landowner or through the Go Wild scheme, you can enjoy the Cumbrian countryside away from the crowds. These really are hidden gems!
Last year, one angler caught over 200 wild brown trout on stretches of the River Irthing, as well as over 30 grayling during the season. The largest trout was 16 inches and the biggest grayling 14 inches. Good catches were also achieved on the main River Eden, the Lyvennet and some of the smaller becks.
Managed by the Eden Rivers Trust, Go Wild in Eden is now in its fourth year and has proved very popular with local and visiting anglers, as well as landowners, who kindly allow Go Wild anglers access to their land. The number of beats has more than doubled in four years!
Will Cleasby, Habitats Officer for Eden Rivers Trust, said: “The objective of the scheme is to bring cash to parts of the river where habitat improvement work has been carried out or is planned. By providing an income to farmers and landowners we hope that it will protect the river for the future.â€
Eden Rivers Trust has welcomed the catch return data from the Go Wild scheme which identifies how fish populations are faring within our local rivers. The brown trout season runs from 15th March to 30th September and you can fish for grayling from the 16th June to the 14th March.
