Changes highlight 2009 FKO/IGFA Inshore World Championship

Change is everywhere and change will be among the highlights for the 2009 Florida Keys Outfitters/International Game Fish Association Inshore World Championship, one of fishing’s premier events, July 7 – 9, in Islamorada, Fla. USA.

Since we began contacting some of the past winners seeking feedback to our proposed changes and ideas we’ve gotten some great response,” said Sandy Moret the tournament’s new director. “We already have half the two fields filled from just our first wave of invitations sent several weeks ago to the 2008 qualifying tournament winners and past champions.”

To be invited anglers must have won one of 36 inshore qualifying tournaments during 2008 throughout the US, the Bahamas and Australia.

We’re adding more all-release tournaments across the globe as qualifiers for the 2010 championships,” said Moret who outlined some of the new changes for the 2009 FKO/IGFA IWC:

Change 1: A new management team and title sponsor.

To allow the IGFA, which originated and managed the championship since 2001, to focus on its core mission of conservation and angler education, it partnered with Moret’s Florida Keys Outfitters (FKO), to operate future events beginning this summer. FKO is a prominent saltwater fly fishing shop, school and organizer of numerous Keys tournaments. The IGFA will remain the championship’s nonprofit benefactor with a fundraising auction.

Change 2: Separate championships for flyrod and light tackle divisions.

Recognizing the unique differences of skills, technique and expertise required to be a master of either sport, the ninth annual event will feature two distinct competitive styles — fly and light tackle. Awards will be presented to the Inshore Light Tackle World Champion and the Inshore Fly Fishing World Champion.

Change 3: Fields limited to 15 top fly and 15 top light-tackle anglers.

More than a year ago when we won the bid to manage the world championship we booked the top winning fly and light tackle tournament guides here in the Florida Keys. We believe we have the 30 finest guides chosen for their expertise in the two divisions. Anglers who qualified in fly events will go for the flyrod title and likewise for those for the light tackle title.

Change 4: Same guide and angler combination all three days.

At the kick off, anglers will draw his or her guide/team mate for the following three days. Teams should be able to develop a rhythm and work more effectively together without having to start from square one each day,” said Moret. “This new format should create a fair, fun and exciting competition with so many anglers and guides coming together utilizing unique angling styles and their ‘best-of-the-best’ natural skills and abilities.”

Change 5: TV coverage on ESPN’s Saltwater Series.

For the first time the championship will be partnering with ESPN Outdoors and its televised Saltwater Series and be presented on other ESPN Outdoors multimedia platforms. Daily tournament coverage will appear on ESPNOutdoors.com and on IGFA.org among others. (see story below)

Sponsors of this year’s FKO/IGFA IWC include Bacardi, Hook and Tackle, Islamorada Fish Co., The Islander Resort, King Sailfish Mounts, Rapala, Shimano, Stiffy Push Poles, Reel Life Art by Pasta, World Wide Sportsman, KD & G Jewelry, Zane Grey Lounge, Bayside Marina, Tibor, Redbone Celebrity Tournament Series, Diamond Fishing Products, Daiichi, Kaenon Sunglasses, Sage, Patagonia, Green Turtle Inn, Rich Products Corp and "High Roller" author Bill Bishop.

IGFA Launches new North Pacific Coast Grand Slam Club

The IGFA recently announced the creation of a new North Pacific Coast Grand Slam Club giving inshore anglers there an opportunity to earn recognition for outstanding angling achievements.

The new grand slam consists of Chinook salmon, rainbow/steelhead trout and Dolly Varden. Anglers must catch all three of these species in the same 24-hour period in order to qualify as a North Pacific Coast Grand Slam recipient.

A newly embossed certificate has been created featuring eye-catching art of the three species by renowned watercolorist Flick Ford who created the remarkable illustrations in BIG: The 50 Greatest World Record Catches.

The application fee for each of the now 31 IGFA Special Clubs range from $25 (U.S.) to $50 and includes an embossed certificate, a listing in the World Record Game Fishes book and also on the website at www.igfa.org.

February Hot Catches

International Game Fish Association World Records Coordinator Rebecca Wright provides highlights of 10 recently selected fish catches made from across the globe, submitted for IGFA world records and now before the records committee:

Guided by Otto Pervik, Kattem, Norway angler Knut Nilsen landed an Atlantic halibut, (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) on December 6, weighing 13.8 kg (30 lb 6 oz) on 4 kg (8 lb) class line. It took Nilsen 30 minutes to land while fishing off Trondheimsfjorden along the coast of Norway. He may beat the long-standing current IGFA men’s line class record of 8 lb 0 oz (3.64 kg), caught on August 19, 1982 near Holsteinsborg, Greenland. (Photo: Atlantic halibut – 29053)

Chris Newport, of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., USA may be the first to enter his name in the currently vacant men’s 24 kg (50 lb) line class slot of the IGFA World Record Game Fishes book after catching a 25.74 kg (56 lb 12 oz) black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci). The species, added in late 2007 for men’s and women’s line class, fly and juniors records is beginning to fill up with record holders. Newport was guided by Joe Verdino, Dec. 19 using pinfish for bait while fishing the Gulf of Mexico. Photo: black grouper – 29058)

Just days later on Dec. 30, Ronald P. Glinski, MD, of Whiteville, NC, USA, guided by Capt. Ralph Delph, also landed a black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci) weighing 9.53 kg (21 lb 0 oz) on men’s 10 kg (20 lb) line class, while fishing Key West, Florida, USA. The current IGFA record is 2 lb. 8 oz. (1.13 kg.), caught Feb 10, 2008 off Marathon in the Fla., Keys. (Photo: black grouper – 29066)

Junior angler Kyle Vincent, of Hobe Sound, Fla., USA, started the New Year right while fishing the Tropic Star in Panama, by landing a 102.23 kg (225 lb 6 oz) yellowfin tuna, (Thunnus albacares) on January 1. Using bonito for bait, he wrestled with the sizable fish for two hours before bringing it to the scales. The current boy’s IGFA junior record is 190 lb 2 oz ( 86.27 kg), caught on April 30, 2006, off Barbados. (Photo: yellowfin tuna – 29059)

In recent months Kamil Hampl, of Cartago, Costa Rica, has put together a string of possible world records fishing along the Pacific coast of her home country. Her latest pending achievement came on Dec. 28, guided by Edgar Montero off Golfito, Costa Rica, after landing a Pacific jack crevalle (Caranx caninus) weighing 10.35 kg (22 lb 13 oz). She was using live sardines on 6 kg (12 lb) class line and took 40 minutes to land the jack. The current IGFA women’s line class record is 20 lb 12 oz (9.42 kg), caught on Sept. 15, 1987 off Zihuatanejo, Mexico. (Photo: Pacific jack crevalle – 29064)

While fishing in Ratchaburi, Thailand on Dec. 29, United Kingdom angler Martin Hodgkinson, of Penn, Wolverhampton, guided by Jean-Francois Helias, landed a sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) weighing 8.32 kg (18 lb 5 oz) on 37 kg (80 lb) class line using live baitfish. The current IGFA record for the hardy fish is 12 lb 7 oz (5.65 kg) caught Feb. 17, 2008 in Garborone, Botswana. (Photo: sharptooth catfish – 29068)

Jean-Francois Helias also lead another UK angler Syringa Eade of Boston, Lincolnshire, to an unusual catch landing an Indochina giant leatherback (Chirala blanci) on Dec. 29 weighing 2.74 kg (6 lb 0 oz) using an earthworm. The catch was made while fishing near Rathcaburi, Thailand, and is being considered as a new entry for the IGFA All-Tackle category. (Photo: Indochina giant featherback – 29074)

Another all new IGFA All-Tackle category addition might come off the unusual catch of angler Steve Kwiat, Honolulu, HI, USA, after he landed a Schnieders big eye (Priacanthus alalaua) on Dec. 31. Guided by Russell Nata he used frozen anchovy for the bright orange catch which weighed 2.95 kg (6 lb 8 oz) while fishing off Kona, Hawaii, USA. (Photo: Schnieders big eye – 29075)

While fly-fishing the Florida Keys on Dec. 20, young IGFA multi-record holder Heather Michelle Harkavy, Coral Springs, Fla., USA, guided by Capt. Chris Morrison, landed a Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus) weighing 1.87 kg (4 lb 2 oz). It took her five minutes to land the fish on 4 kg (8 lb) tippet while fishing Marathon, Fla. The current IGFA women’s fly record is 3 lb 12 oz (1.7 kg), caught on Feb. 26, 2007 off nearby Islamorada, Fla. (Photo: Spanish mackerel – 29098)

From Dakar, Senegal local angler Sabine Calendini guided by Eric Nevew, landed a meagre (Argrosomus spp.) on Dec. 8 weighing 17.6 kg (38 lb 12 oz). She was using 15 kg (30 lb) class line and attracted the popular sport fish, a member of the drum family, with a live sardine. Ms. Calendini may be the first to claim the presently vacant IGFA women’s line class record for her catch if her documentation is approved. (Photo: meager – 29055)

Special Catch & Release Fishing exhibit and video in IGFA Changing Gallery

The Changing Gallery in the IGFA Hall of Fame & Museum is featuring a special exhibit which highlights the background and progression of “catch and release” fishing.

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in the 1950’s and ‘60’s, gained the reputation as the “sportfishing capital of the world” with tourists mounting thousands of fish as trophies to adorn their walls each year. Thousands of other fish, particularly sailfish and marlin, were also taken but not mounted as captains earned big commissions only after killing the catches.

This trend was unsustainable to the South Florida fishery and led to the concept we know today as catch and release. The majority of all sailfish caught today are released alive and mounts are produced without the need for the actual fish. Sailfish populations have rebounded and the fishing has improved dramatically as catch and release is a trend here to stay.

In addition on display in the exhibit is an exclusive video with archival footage of the mass over-harvesting of fish during the early days of sport fishing as well as many striking, vintage photos. Also IGFA Hall of Famer Mark Sosin narrates a short film which shows how release mounts are produced without killing the fish. Finally, the special new exhibit also features start-to-finish mounts, taxidermy facts and spectacular release photos.
