The Trout Lake is fishing well, with our Italian friends Luca and Pepe today. Luca had 9 trout to 6 lbs. Dave Mac (from Kerry) has visited us 4 or 5 times this week and has connected with some very big trout (but hasn’t landed any of them yet). He has caught plenty of smaller trout to 4 lbs.

Denis Goulding fished a few evening sessions for the spectacular evening rise and has caught between 8 and 15 trout on most evenings. His good friend Darren has also been catching well on the evening rise.

David Tantrum Secretary at daiflyt@yahoo.ie  reports on behalf of the WATERFORD CITY AND COUNTY TROUT ANGLERS

WATERFORD CITY RESERVOIRS

FISHING REPORT UP TO May 1st.

Knockaderry.  Mainly fished by club members.  Hire boats little used.

Fish are deep, feeding on Hog lice, Leech and Caddis.  Good bags by those that fish on the bottom, not easy with the strong wind. Saturday a boat recorded 12 fish up to 4 lbs!  A brown trout of 6 lbs was caught and returned by a young member fishing with his father. Yesterday we struggled in a strong wind to catch 4 fish.  Broken twice with 8 lbs. floro.  Very careless!

Carrigavantra.  Recently stocked. Lures for obscene bags.  Heavy Olive hatches bringing up the residents, great dry fly catches for the discerning. Watch out for Hawthorns.  Bank angling best for nymph fishing.  Try a small weighted Montana on the point, and black buzzers on the droppers, cast across the wind and let it hang out.

Ballyscanllon Well stocked, little fished, – too easy over the hill at Carrigaventra!

The St. Mullins shad competition will be held on Sunday the 18th of May at 1 pm.  Many Shad have all ready been caught including 50 for one angler in one day! Last year it was the best for 10 years as regards’ numbers.

21/4/08 flat calm for most of the day, even though the wind got up around 2.30pm from the SW then veered WSW light and overcast, and still my Noble game fish wouldn’t cooperate with fly or lure, until our Manger Mr. john Murphy cast his flies out at the Church Island at around 5.30 pm and his prayers were soon answered with a fine 9 lbs. Salmon. Max air temperature 11.9C/53.42F.                                                                                     22/4/08 There was a strong SSE blowing with heavy rain, but it didn’t last long and just for the record there was 4.4mm of rainfall and max air temperature 12.9C/55.22F because of the wild weather some boats on the North side called it a day, but come 3 pm the wind dropped but with all that, all Angle
rs on the North side failed, but on the Southside it was a different story for Mr. Donald Eustace caught a fine Salmon on the troll with his Gillie Mr. junior Scully, contact (353 0669474270)

23/4/08 Another wild and at times stormy day with a strong southerly wind blowing, but that didn’t deter we anglers from casting our flies or trolling our lures and at least two Anglers came up with the goods and that was Mr. Michael Smith and his Son Sean of the UK who caught a fine Salmon on the troll and a 4.5 lbs. Sea Trout on the fly out at the Church Island and they were guided by their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Amount of rainfall 5.9 mm, max air temperature 14.1C/57.38F. There was a fine salmon caught on the troll in Edere Bay by a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton senior and just for the record you can contact Terence on (3530870638231) also there was a Sea Trout of 3 lbs. caught on the troll by Mr. Peter Mc Neill of the UK fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and just for the record it was nice to see a few Salmon jumping. Bright and sunny throughout the day, wind SW fresh, max air temperature 14.2C/57.56F, amount of rainfall 0.3mm.

25/4/08 Mr. Peter Mc Neill was in good form again when he caught a sea Trout of 3 lbs. and added a fine Salmon of 7 lbs. to his basket all caught on the troll with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy. Wind first thing this morning was S then veered SW fresh to strong, so strong, some boats left the Lake early. Amount of rainfall 1.6mm, max air temperature 14.2C/57.56F.               26/4/08 Two Salmon to report, first in the striking zone was local Gillie Mr. John Griffin of johngriffinloughcurrane@hotmail.com who caught a fine 11 lbs. Salmon on the troll on the south side in Edere Bay and he was telling me what a battle he had. Next in the firing line was Mr. Peter Mc Neill of the UK who also caught a 8 lbs. Salmon on the troll in Edere Bay with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy contact (353 0872051515). Wind SW light with bright sunshine throughout the day, with 4.5mm of rain falling in the evening, max air temperature 14C/57.2F.

27/4/08 All today’s headlines go to Mr. Peter Mc Neill of the UK who caught a lighting fresh 10 lbs Salmon on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy. Heavy rain throughout the morning for about two hours and felt very cold, but at least it made a nice afternoon. Amount of rainfall 3.5mm. Max air temperature 11.9C/53.42F, and remember if you want a day by day report you can contact our Manger Mr. John Murphy www.loughcurrane.com  That is all the news from your gillie and the Waterville Fishery. LITTLE BROSNA RIVER

No angling reported this week.

CAMCOR RIVER BIRR

The ShRFB issued a Press Release on February 25th, 2008. We request that anglers familiarise with new conservation measures for the fishery.

"This year the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has introduced a new trout conservation measure on its fishery, River Camcor, in association with the Camcor and Little Brosna Angling Club. This follows concerns that trout stocks were being fished by unsustainable means. This new regulation will ensure that trout stocks will be maintained and that anglers will be able to enjoy angling on the Camcor into the future.

The conservation measure of Fly Fishing only will be enforced by Fisheries Staff who will patrol the river during the open season which commences on the 1st March 2008 until the 30th September.

The Camcor and Little Brosna is an important salmon and trout fishery and every effort will put in place to sustain and develop its potential. Therefore, we urge all anglers to abide by this conservation measure and practice catch and release when possible.

If anglers have any queries please contact Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

GARRYKENNEDY FISHING CLUB..

The Garrykennedy club hosted a trout fly fishing competition kindly sponsored by Pat Nolan of Premier Angling Supplies on Sunday last (April 27).

As we went to press it appears that Michael Moloney is the winner with a lovely fish of 2 lbs. and 2 oz. Well done to Michael, who was one of the few lucky anglers to land a fish on the day.

Only four fish over the legitimate 14 inch mark were produced for the “weigh-in” at the end of a long day’s fishing. Conditions were not ideal and mayfly hatches are still fairly slow, though an improvement is expected in the coming days as we enter May.

Hopefully, the conditions will change by the weekend when the Garrykennedy club hosts the competition for the Kevin Reynolds Trophy on Saturday and the William Donnellan Trophy on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Killaloe and Ballina Anglers on the lower end of Lough Derg are hosting fly fishing competitions on this Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.  The events are sponsored by Tom Molamphy and Ray Molloy, respectively and fishing will commence at 9am.  Mayfly weigh-in rules apply.

The Lough Derg Anglers Association will also host a competition on Saturday for all clubs around the lake to mark the 50th anniversary of its foundation. There is a trophy for first place and three cash prizes. The presentation of prizes for this competition will be held in Ryan’s Pub in Garrykennedy on Saturday night, courtesy of the proprietors, Roy and Denise Breen.

Western Angling Report to 29th April, 2008

Galway Weir

Another very good week in Galway, with 21 salmon landed, and a lot of fish hooked and lost as well. Loughrea resident Jon Menzies landed a 9-pounder on spinner, while Northern Ireland visitor John Stephenson had a fine 12 lbs. fish on shrimp. Kildare man Sean McMenamin had a 12 lbs. fish on s
pinner, and the following day landed the first grilse of 4 lbs. Rocky Moran from castlebar caught and released a lovely 12.5 lbs. salmon on fly, while Joe Mulry, a former fishery officer at the weir, had a 9 lbs. fish on spinner. Owen Jackman also had a 9-pounder, while Martin Kiely from
Limerick landed a nice springer of 10 lbs. Paul O’Malley from Navan caught a 9 lbs. fish on spinner, and Eoin Warner from Cork had 2 fish on successive days of 8.5 and 9 lbs. Dublin visitor Dave O’Reilly had a 7 lbs. fish on fly. Meanwhile, on the High Bank fishery downstream, local angler Wille Browne landed the fish of a lifetime, a specimen salmon of 20 lbs. 2 oz. The fish was a beautiful bar of silver, fresh in from the sea and still carrying a few sea lice.

With a lot of fish in the river and fish like that being caught, prospects are great for the weeks ahead!

Western Lakes

There were very large olive hatches seen on Lough Mask over the weekend, although with so many fly about the trout were surprisingly quiet, apparently preferring to feed on nymphs below the surface rather than coming to the flies on the water. Wet flies and nymphs were the order of the day, with the Sooty Olive working best. Sean Moloney from Ballinrobe took 2 anglers from Belfast out for a day, and they landed 8 trout between them, including fish of 3lbs and 2.5lbs. Ronan Cusack fished several days, averaging 3 trout a day, while most anglers out over the weekend averaged 2-3 fish a day. Some fish were also taken on duckfly patterns.

Meanwhile, on Lough Corrib, mayfly are already starting to appear in some areas, with decent hatches already seen in the Cornamona area. The Corr na Mona and District Angling Club held a competition on Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the club, with 72 anglers competing and landing 78 trout. The winning team was Kevin Molloy and Mike Faherty from Oughterard, with 4 trout for 9.1 lbs, including a fish of 3.5 lbs taken by Kevin. Seamus Kelly and Joe Creane were 2nd, with 6 trout for 8.35 lbs, while John Walsh and Kevin Lydon took 3rd with 4 trout for 7.89 lbs. The heaviest fish was caught by Rory Daly at 3.9 lbs. Elsewhere, Peter Curran landed 15 trout over 2 days, releasing most alive. Pat Day had 8 fish over 3 outings, and Mick Kinneavy had 3 trout for 2 evenings fishing. P. Walsh also had 4 trout over 4 evenings, including a fish of 3.5 lbs.

Further down the lake, the Braithreach na Coiribe club in Galway City held a competition on Sunday, with 1st team prize going to Niall Collins, Paddy O’Toole & Cathal Collins, with 5 trout weighting 13.30 lbs. In 2nd were Don Stiffe, Mickie Bewick & Alfie Stiffe with 5 trout weighting 12.05 lbs, and 3rd place went to Ernie Deacy & Hugh Grehan with 4 trout weighting 10.90 lbs. The heaviest trout was caught by Eugene McCarthy, a lovely fish of 6.05 lbs. caught in the River Corrib, so it qualifies for a specimen award.

It seems the mayfly may be early this year, in spite of the cold spring, so let’s hope for some decent fishing conditions over the next few weeks.

Amongst the successful anglers were Ronnie Mayock with a 10 lbs. salmon, Seamus O’Neill with a 9 lbs. fish and Eamon Kennedy with an 8-pounder. George and Edward Westroff, UK, fishing from Newport House were also successful with fish of 8 lbs. and 9 lbs.

Please note that Lough Beltra and the Newport River are fished under a “Catch & Release” basis until the 11th of May following which they may be fished in accordance with normal regulations.

Ballisodare River

The Ballisodare Fishery produced a total of 22 salmon for the week, 15 of which were released. There were some nice fish in the 9 – 10 lbs. range caught with the best fish of the week falling to J. RIVER DROWES – Monday 21st to Sunday 27th April 2008.

      &nbs
p;

The weather was cold toward the start of the week but warmed up as the week progressed and rainfall was fairly light. Despite the fair conditions the river was quiet and even the weekend saw few anglers with only 6 visiting rods fishing on Sunday. There were however a number of salmon recorded despite the low angling attendance. On Wednesday, Fran Regan recorded a 10½ lbs. salmon caught on shrimp from the Old Sea Pool. George McAteer accounted for an 8 lbs. fish caught on shrimp which he released. Joe Baker landed a fine 11 lbs. salmon caught from Tinker’s Hole on a Cascade fly. On Saturday, Vincent Bourten recorded a 9 lbs. salmon caught and released from the Mill Pool on a fly of his own tying.

The river is reading 5 on the gauge at Four Masters Bridge at present and rain is forecast for the coming week which should freshen the river somewhat.

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 21st to Sunday 27th April 2008.

Weather conditions at the start of the week were not favourable but as the week progressed the weather warmed somewhat with winds veering to an easterly direction. The fishery was fairly quiet with very few anglers fishing for trout. There were a number of boats out fishing for salmon. On Friday, Darren Maguire lost a huge salmon estimated to be in excess of 25 lbs. He hooked the fish trolling and proceeded to play the salmon for an hour before realising the fish would not fit into his landing net. He decided to head for shore and beach the fish. Before this was achieved the fish came lose and was gone! He landed a 10½ lbs. salmon later on which was some consolation and boat partner, Michael Flanagan also boated a 7½ lbs. salmon caught on the troll.

In the Rossinver Bay Fishery, there were numerous reports of good quantities of salmon showing though they were difficult to entice. A number of fish were hooked and lost. On Friday, Michael Short was guiding a client who hooked and landed a 7 lbs. salmon on the fly.

ERNE ESTUARY – Monday 21st to Sunday 27th April 2008.

The Erne estuary was quiet this week with only a few anglers fishing. They accounted for some 10 sea trout caught mainly on sandeel.

OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 21st to Sunday 27th April 2008.

The Owenea River ran at very low levels all week with the gauge only reaching 0.14 metres at its highest. The gauge average for the week read a very low 0.12 metres. Only 2 visiting rods fished for the week.

On the carp lake, Peter Madden (local angler) has been targeting the silver fish – roach, perch and rudd – on the pole. He has been bagging up, with the best roach touching 1.5 lbs! Keith Mooney had three carp during the week and Sasha Manic had 8 and lost 4 in one session. Sasha’s best fish was 8 lbs. Al Walshe had carp every day this week and his best carp was into the double figures – 10 lbs. Sean Campbell has also been chasing the silver fish with good bags in the evening time.

CATCH OF THE WEEK

This week’s catch of the week comes from Co. Monaghan. Specimen hunter and angling journalist, Nick Parry put in a huge effort fishing a lake through awful weather with lashing rain and strong winds. After fishing for over 90 hours he caught two specimen roach bream hybrids. The first weighed 6 lbs. 5 oz. and the second of 6 lbs. 6.5 oz. probably the biggest brace of Roach Hybrids in history! End tackle was a 50 gram Kamasan black cap feeder fished with a short hook length helicopter rig, size 12 hook and four red maggots.  See great photo on the catch of the week at

UPPER SHANNON

COURSE FISHING ON THE SHANNON AT LANESBORO…

Paul Waghorn a regular to Lanesboro is back on holiday for the past few weeks.  Paul has recently published a dedicated website on fishing in the area which can be viewed at http://www.lanesboroughangling.ie/ This will be a useful resource for visiting anglers with lots of background and archived reports and photos etc.   Here are the latest reports from his personal diaries, for others logon to his website.

Wednesday April 23rd: A few anglers were on the stretch who were probably not regular readers of this page. I understand they were gone by lunchtime with barely a handful of sub 1 oz fish to their credit. I was on the Inny where 100 yards above Red Bridge I found some Roach to 6 oz. I came back early to have a go on the stick float on the Roscommon side of the navigation channel. Unfortunately the wind was blowing off the lake causing waves, prohibiting my session. Even the feeder was out of the question. I think the wind was easing at dusk but saw very few fish on the surface.

Thursday April 24th: I saw the 5-day forecast on TV3 today and was hoping for good news but I’m afraid to say it’s getting colder after the weekend. This will no doubt affect the number of fish usually coming off the lake about this time. The water temperature is still 47f. One lone angler was on the stretch early this morning and had a few smallish Hybrids and Roach. A hail storm just before mid-day prompted me on a trip to the Camlin where my first stop was the Longford Town section. I had 8 good Roach to 10 oz before making a move downstream where I failed to register a bite. I took a drive to Maladys for a repeat of Mondays satisfying session. This time I found the fish were of a better stamp with the best going 14 oz. I had 46 Roach, 4 Hybrids and 2 small Trout in my 3 hours before heading back to Lanesborough. Not surprisingly, there was no one fishing.

Friday April 25th: Good news at last, the water temperature has hit 50f due to increasingly warmer nights this week. However in the daytime its hardly T-Shirt weather. Three visitors staying near Portumna travelled to Lanesborough having heard good reports (news travels slowly here) I advised them to try the navigation channel below the bridge. Sadly, they blanked and less than two hours later they were planning to move elsewhere. I went to the River Lung above Lough Gara and had 38 fish, mainly Roach to 5 oz. On returning back at 8 pm I decided to have a go by the marker bouy on the Roscommon side. Things were looking up when first cast I netted a Roach of 1 lb 7 oz but despite
a few taps I failed to add to my tally. Feeder fishing is quite easy on the quay side with the "streetlamp" style lighting.

Saturday April 26th: Normally I’d expect this to be the first of the "mad" three weekends but the bank was surprisingly quiet this morning. Just before lunchtime I received a call informing me the first train had delivered peat to the power station indicating the imminent start up. The gusher started around 2pm but as yet the chimney is showing no sign of activity. I walked across the bridge at 19.30 hoping to catch a few fish running up-river. I only registered two bites failing to connect with either resulting in my first blank of the spring campaign. It was a pleasure to watch the flocks of Whimbrel heading downstream as dusk approached. When I made my way back I was pleased to see for the first time in almost two weeks the wind had almost stopped.

Sunday April 27th: The power station started pumping hot water this afternoon and fish appeared within a couple of hours. A tourist angler from Essex had 12 Hybrids on the Gusher though none exceeded a pound or so. Devonish Dave had a number of Roach and a Rudd of just over a pound when the Essex man vacated the swim. A very large Pike took a plug from an angler from Co. Mayo it was estimated at over 20 lbs. but was lost with the plug and trace. The Pike was seen later, obviously distressed. I had a short session from 18.30 ’til dusk just above the bridge catching about 7 lbs. of Roach with the best around a pound. A Pike took a fish but got the better of me. As dusk fell, I moved to Ryan’s Gate and was rewarded with a bream of 2 lbs. 6 oz. along with a few tiny Rudd/Roach. The rain was quite heavy at 21.00 and I was glad to get indoors. There was no surface activity again tonight and it was very cold but I’m expecting a good week on the stretch.

Monday April 28th: Got up far too early anticipating a dawn splash. In fact it was quite hard going, I had a Hybrid of 2 lbs, a Bream of a pound and some Roach but no monsters. I managed to land a Pike of 5 lb 6 oz but at 09.00 I had had enough with about 10lbs plus the Pike. Sue and Ernie Callaghan were joined by their guest Monty and all had an enjoyable day each amassing around 25 lb a piece. Sue had the most significant catch with a three pound Tench.  I believe it’s the first reported at Lanesborough this year. I had a short wet session on the Camlin that saw just seven Roach averaging 5-6 oz each. In the evening it was a struggle on the stretch and I had barely 2 lbs in two hours. Some big fish were moving below the bridge so lets hope for a change of fortune in the week leading up to the busy holiday period.

Brian Bohan   CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE  MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNON

Coarse fishing has picked up very well in the last week or so with good catches reported in the upper Shannon area. Barneys Shore on Lough Allan has started to show some good fishing, good hybrids and some Bream showing. Lough Rynn is fishing very well at the moment. Darell Swain has fished Rynn a number of times and has had 70 lb catches. Martin McCrann from Mohill had some nice Tench last Sunday.

Conor McGrath and I fished last Friday in a nice southerly wind and we had well over 100 lbs. of Bream between us. I pre-baited two swims for well known Dublin anglers, Willow Quickley and Alan Synott. Alan was on his first Tench fishing trip and I sat with him for a few hours Saturday and he was rewarded with 12 Tench and some 3 lbs. Bream on the waggler. Willow was unlucky not to catch any Tench or Bream but had a nice bag of Perch.

Rynn Shannon Angling Club had their first outing of the year on Sunday 20th April on the Sheepwalk Lough Rynn in a very cold east wind. Fishing was hard with mainly Roach, but some good hybrids did turn up to about 2 lb. Terry Allan lost a nice Bream in the last few moments of the match.
Results as follows

Terry Allan 10 lbs. 6 oz

Brian Bohan 9 lbs. 10 oz

Mal Gaffey 7 lbs. 2 oz

Darrel Swain 6 lbs.

Conor McGrath 5 lbs. 8 oz

27/04/2008
Our second match was on Lough Scur. Scur did not fish very well mainly small Roach showing and proved very difficult fishing in the windy conditions.

Results as Follows

Brian Bohan 5 lb 14 oz

Gary Lyons 3 lb 10 oz

Terry Allan 3 lb 8 oz

Conor Mc Grath 3 lb

Mick Oliver 2 lb 6 oz

Strokestown and North Longford have been fishing well and with the change in the weather the fish should start to move ready for spawning, and this may slow things once they start. However after this we should see the fish catches improve as they start to feed again.

Last week we stated that some pre-baiting was going on and we would check it out this week, well Billy from Liverpool was still able to put some Bream in his net during his second week. The catches increased day by day for brothers Stephen and Trevor who were able to put together some good bags of fish. At the time of writing the Pike had moved in and surrounded the shoal of fish they had in front of them putting the fish off feeding a little.

Next week we should have some more great catches to report from anglers staying this week and next – watch this space.

The Banagher Festival has commenced and is being fished by 49 anglers up to Friday next May 2nd.  Fishing so far has been difficult due to the very changeable weather. Some pleasure anglers are fishing the area. There is an abundance of pre-spawning fish shoaling up below the last lock where the River Brosna and the Canal join. Upstream of the bridge at Shannon harbour is producing some nice Tench. The hot water at Shannonbridge is producing some quality Roach.

Last Saturday April 26th 25 juvenile anglers took part in our Fisheries Awareness Week competition on our access for all fishery at Donamon. Bill Cassidy, experienced match angling instructor was on hand to offer his expert advice, tutoring the anglers in Pole and Whip fishing. All competitors caught fish, mainly Roach and hybrids. A pleasure angler fishing the stretch had 17 kg of mixed fish. Conditions were ideal on the day.  International Wheelchair competition kicks off on May 16th and will be fished by anglers from Holland, Belgium and Ireland. More on that later.

FALLON BROTHERS WIN THE POYNTONIA CUP

As the trout fishing had been so poor over the last few weeks everybody was looking forward to a change of pace with our first pike competition of the year but just like the trout the pike are just not ready to come out and play in any significant numbers. The day started well with twenty boats taking to the water, the vast majority starting at the southern end of the lake and only two boats opting for the Portrun start and it was one of these two boats that produced the winning fish.  The presentation took place that evening in McNeill’s bar where Arlene McNeill was, as ever, our fantastic hostess and the hospitality was second to none. With only nine fish brought to the scales during the day neither Captain had been run off their feet and it was the pike of brothers Paul and Joe Fallon weighing 16 lbs. 11 ozs. which claimed first prize and the Poyntonia Cup, one of the oldest cups in the club having been first fished for back in 1937. Second place went to Eddie O
’Donovan for his pike weighing 15 lbs. 4 ozs. while father and son George and Connor Price took third place for their pike which weighed 8 lbs. 15 ozs. Fourth place went to Eamon Cunningham and Angela Sloane for their pike weighing 7 lbs. 12 ozs; this was their first prize to win in eight years of fishing together! The fifth and final spot was claimed by another father and son duo, Tony and Declan Doolan, for a pike weighing 7 lbs. 2 ozs.  Our sincere thanks to Arlene McNeill not only for her excellent hospitality on the evening but also for her very generous sponsorship of this competition. Thanks also go to Thomas Killion and Liam O’Sullivan who were our Captains of The Day.

Pat Murray from Bray, Co Wicklow reports on his recent trip to the River Inny…

On Saturday 19th April 2008 I took the boat out on the River Inny with son Leigh and his friend Fergal. We fished from 8.00 a.m to 14.30 p.m. using various lures and also dead-baiting with Mackerel, lamprey eel, trout, and roach. It was a very cold day and the river was very dirty, difficult enough conditions. Leigh showed the way with a 10 lbs. pike falling to a lamprey eel dead bait. He followed this with a 6 lbs. fish. No matter what myself or Fergal did we could not get a fish. All enjoyed the day and went home talking of our next trip.

First Specimen Wrasse of the season is boated on the Clare Dragoon

Report dated April 29th…

My only days fishing over this last week, was again Saturday and Sunday.
I did have a group of Germans turn up to my house on Tuesday looking to fish on the Wednesday but I was committed to going to
Dublin where a group of us were hoping to finalize the setting up of a Irish Charter Skippers Association. This we did with the help of the Central Fisheries Board.  I hope and believe this can be a very useful organisation for the promotion and improvement of the Charter fishing fleet in this country.  But enough of that and back to the fishing! The weather last week had still not settled and on Friday there was a big swell running. By Saturday morning the wind had settled but it was still quite bumpy off the Loop! To add to this the Mackerel that were in plentiful supply the previous week, were not to be found. An hour of trying did not produce a single fish and all we had to show in our bait box was a couple of herring. Anyway we decided to head off and try our luck. The sea was a lot nicer off the land and we settled down to fishing with a selection of rigs, some of which were tipped with some frozen squid I had brought along. Fishing was steady but never reached the level of the previous week. I put this down in part to the lack of fresh bait. We did have some nice codling of about 4 to 5 lbs. on some perks tipped with herring.  The next day (Sunday) I had a group out who were looking to get as close as possible to specimen size for a “big fish” competition they were running. We again started off looking for some fresh Mackerel and with much trying were lucky to run across one shoal that produced about 30 fish. Armed with these and a fine array of other baits we stopped to try for some Wrasse. Fishing for this species was brisk with some fine fish and even a specimen Ballan Wrasse of 2.41 kg (5.3 lbs.) was boated. From this I moved to some whiting ground which produced fish to around 2 lbs. After this good start I moved down onto the Reefs that were fishing so well over the previous weeks, but even with our supply of fresh bait, the fishing was never busy and catching was hard work.  So all in all the fishing was a lot quieter over the last few days but we did have the bonus of our first specimen of the year. And I am sure the fishing will pick up as the weather improves.

Austy Gill, skipper of the White Seahorse landed a large common Skate on Sunday wingspan of 64 ins also 5 other species were caught in Clew Bay.

The Dublin party that were out with Austy catching the big Skate have since sent me this mail + Photo which will accompany this piece on our website at: http://www.cfb.ie/fishing_in_ireland/update/sea_angling.htm

Hi Paul

I thought this might be of interest to you.

Attached is a picture of a skate we caught in Clew Bay in Westport on April 27th. It measures 64 inches across and is over 6 ft in length. The skipper estimated it could be as much as 200 lbs. It took 45 minutes to bring to the surface and 5 of us to bring it aboard. We tagged it with a cfb tag (it had no tag already) and released it. Which was almost as difficult as bringing it aboard. In the photo are me (Cormac Mc Cann) and David Mc Govern. The man taking the photo and who was holding the rod when the Skate breached was Graham Moles and we are all from Ballyboden, Dublin. The name of the boat that day was the White Seahorse and it was a super days fishing. Serious case of beginners luck!

Many Thanks,

Cormac Mc Cann
