Blackwater Lodge Newsletter – June 30, 2008

A timely Flood hits the Blackwater

On June 27, a good flood hit the Blackwater which took the river height up from 0.47m to 1.65m.  Today – (June 30) – it has now dropped back to 0.46m and is fining off well.  As expected, the fishing picked up considerably once the flood subsided.

Yesterday – Sunday, June 29 – a total of 6 fish were caught.  Calum Barclay’s 3 rod party on
Lower Kilmurry saw a lot of fish running during the day. They hooked 4 fish and landed 3 weighing 13.1, 6½ & 3½ lbs.  Pictures are in the June Gallery. All were sparkling silver fish with sea-lice.
John Kirkpatrick from Co. Down caught his first ever salmon – a slightly coloured 12 pounder on spinner from Ballincurrig (Beat12) which he sportingly returned alive.  Glenda Powell took a sea-liced grilse on spinner on
Kents, and Pakie Carroll had a 7 pounder on Carrig – both returned alive.

Prospects
Today the river is coming into even better order and we are expecting to see fish taken on fly.  The weather will continue broken for the week which will keep the level topped up.  Looks as if the fish are now starting to run in good numbers with both grilse and larger fish being taken, so the prospects of sport in the next weeks should be excellent.

Keep up to date with all the latest news on our Fishing Report page (password required).

Availability
Reasonable for accommodation & fishing at the Lodge in the next couple of weeks.

From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net

Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/

23/6/08 I start this weeks report with a back date on the 22/6/08 there was a fine catch by www.kbfishingireland.com Kevin’s son Gareth caught a fine 7 lbs. Specimen Sea Trout and finished the day off with a fine 13 lbs. Salmon on the Commeragh. Now back to the present there was two grilse caught on the troll by Mr Richard Nugent and Mr Robert Smith, fishing with their gillie Mr Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and in the Sea trout department I read on www.loughcurrane.com that Mr Barry Vaughn caught two Sea trout in the 3 lbs. class. Wind SSW light to fresh and overcast and warm, max air temperature 17.1C/62.78F. Amount of rainfall in past 24 hours 0.7mm. 24/6/08 It was a wild day with a strong SSE wind blowing with light rain and at times heavy until about 1.30 pm and made another small flood, amount of rainfall 14.4mm. A few boats did venture out and all drew a blank but at least the Famous Butler Pool and @ www.watervillegolflinks.ie did produce one Grilse caught on the fly. Max air temperature 17.3C/65.14F.                  25/6/08 The Waterville system was in good form today and I will start with the Commeragh where Mr Mel Smith was in good form with two Grilse to his rod with his Gillie Mr Kevin Brain and of www.kbfishingireland.com and on Lough Currane Mr Richard Nugent and Mr Robert Smith with their gillie Mr Neil O’Shea and www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught two Grilse on the troll, next in the striking zone was Mr Marcus Cruse who caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon on the fly with his gillie Mr Mike Dwyer and last but not least I read on wwwloughcurrane.com that Mr Anthony Buckley caught a grilse. Wind WNW fresh to strong and overcast, amount of rainfall 1.2mm, max air temperature 16.8C/62.24F.

26/6/08 There was a strong SW wind blowing with heavy rain all morning and it made a very good flood and I can tell you my noble game fish have plenty of liquid refreshment and as Mr Richard Nugent and Mr Robert Smith proved in the last few days, if you are out there, you will catch the old gentlemen and as they did again today when they caught two salmon on the troll weighing in at 7.5 lbs. and 8.5 lbs. with their Gillie Mr Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and in the Sea trout department Mr Michael Murphy fishing out www.lakelandshouse.com caught a fine 7 lbs. specimen Sea Trout. Now to the evening shift on the Commeragh where Master Adam O’Dwyer of Waterville is following in his Fathers foot steps, because he caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon, I think there is a young Gillie in the making and last but not least Mr Anthony Buckley also landed a 8 lbs. Salmon.

27/6/08 there was a fine salmon caught by Mr Kruse with his gillie Mr Mike O’Dwyer, also in good form was Rudolf of Germany who caught a 7lbs salmon on the troll with his gillie Mr Bob Priestly. In the Sea Trout department Mr Richard Nugent and Mr Robert Smith caught two fine Sea Trout all in the 5lbs class. Wind SSW fresh to strong at times with heavy rain early this morning and there was another good flood coming down the Commeragh, amount of rainfall 7.3mm, max air temperature 16.6C/61.88F.

28/6/08 The upper lakes came in to their own today I will begin with Lough Derriana where Mr John Buckley caught a Sea Trout of 5 lbs. and on Lough Na Mona a Guest caught one Salmon and two Sea Trout with his Gillie Mr John Quinlan of www.thatchcottageireland.co.uk and just across from Na Mona on Lough Cloonaghlin Mr Clive Halnan and party caught a Grilse and a number of Brown Trout, now to the Big Lake/Lough Currane Where our Manger Mr john Murphy caught himself a fine 5 lbs. Sea Trout, there were a few more Sea trout taken by other anglers in the 2to 3 lbs. class. Wind SSW light to fresh and overcast with very low cloud and humid, max air temperature 17.1C/62.78F. Amount of rainfall 0.2mm

29/6/08 Waterville Fishery was on the quiet side after yesterdays action, Mr Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and his guest caught one Grilse and on the Sea Trout front, Master Adam O’Dwyer was in good form again, with two Sea Trout in the 3 lbs class. Wind SW fresh to strong at times with good cloud cover and the odd light shower, amount of rainfall 0.3mm, max air temperature 16.6C/61.88F. This month’s amount of rainfall up until the 29/6/08 was 124.1mm/4.88582.

LAUNE ANGLERS WATERS AND BEAT 3 (REPORT OF BILLY DOWNES, CLUB SECRETARY)

Again this week I could only find one happy angler on the Laune.  He is Michael Crowley from Tralee who caught a fine fish of 12 lbs. on the worm on Laune Anglers waters.  All the other news was no fish or water too high, too coloured and whatever you are having yourself.  The high water is very welcome as it was badly needed but it seems to be sending whatever fish are there through the system without stopping.  Angling prospects for the coming week should be good.  I fished Beat 3 Sunday evening in perfect conditions not a sign of a fish.

RIVER BLACKWATER (KENMARE)

Good flood on Thursday brought in the fore runners of this season fish.  Dave Baker, Kenmare, had a lovely 11 lbs. salmon on Friday.  Dave Breen, Kenmare, had a salmon of 10.5 lbs. on Saturday and 2 more good fish were lost.

Western Lakes

All quiet on the western lakes again this week, with the only sport going to early risers who are up to catch the Caenis hatch in the early hours. Daytime fishing is very poor, with no sign of sedge hatches yet, and fish either stuffed on Caenis or concentrating on perch and roach fry. Let’s hope for some sedge hatches soon to liven up the surface fishing!

Connemara

There has been a great run of both salmon and sea trout in the Ballynahinch catchment after last week’s rainfall. Sea trout are also running hard at Costello, and with breezy showery weather forecast anglers are expected to have great sport this week.

Colin Folan, fishery manager at Inagh Lodge, reports:

Massive floods have brought a very good run of salmon and sea trout into the system.  The sea trout are in great condition and are of a decent size.  The water is still very high for the lake but the river is in great shape.   There are lots of anglers around also.

John Connolly (Mayo) fished 2 days and landed 4 salmon from 4 – 9 lbs., all from Corloo beat on Silver Badger and Cascade.

Vincent Foley (Dublin) fished 1 day and caught 1 salmon and 16 sea trout from the Inagh River below Corloo.

Rory Sheehan reports:

River Moy

The M
oy River fished extremely well this week. Heavy rain at the start of the week raised water levels and fish moved up through the system and all fisheries reported good catches. As well as anglers enjoying good catches the quality of the fish was very good with many weighing in above 8 lbs. The reported salmon catch for the week was 582 bringing the total for the year so far to 1870.

The Moy Fishery produced some good angling despite the rise in water levels. For part of the week spinner and worm were permitted. On the Ridge Pool, French angler, Henri Tromelin, caught 2 salmon for 9.52 & 7.98 lbs. while fellow French angler, Gerald Groult, also had two salmon for 3.42 & 9.32 lbs. Peter Mapledoram from England, banked a 5.46 lbs fish while Chrispin Rodwell, Dublin, had a nice 8.48 lbs fish. On the Cathedral Beat, Welsh angler, Bruce Dickinson, took an 8.5 lbs salmon while Liam Young from Tipperary landed a nice 9 lbs fish. On the Freshwater Beat, John Hanley, England caught 2 fish.

Upstream of the weir, the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water fished well and many anglers reported good catches. The middle sections of the river also produced good numbers of fish throughout the week.  The Mount Falcon Fishery has launched a novel initiative whereby it will donate €5 to the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO) for every salmon caught and released this year on its water. The angling at Mount Falcon over the week was good with James Gilchrist, England landing a 6.5 lbs salmon while on his Honeymoon! Jimmy Conlon banked a fantastic 13.5 lbs fish while Michael Wilson caught a fine 10.75 lbs. salmon.

On the Knockmore Fishery, Alan Childs, UK, caught 3 salmon while the Attymass Fishery produced a fantastic 14 lbs. fish for UK angler, Reg Goodwin. German angler, Harold Retsch, banked a fine 13 lbs. salmon on the Coolcronan Fishery and UK angler, Mathew Hewitson, caught a 5 lbs. fish at Byrne’s Fishery.

Alan Cully, Northern Ireland caught a lovely 13 lbs. fish on a spinner at Gannon’s Fishery while the Foxford Fishery provided some excellent salmon angling for French angler, Thiery Del-Doierron, who had 8 salmon for 4 days fishing. On the Foxford Salmon Anglers’ water, Austrian angler, Walter Schuster, banked a 6 lbs salmon while fishing worm. The Cloongee Fishery also proved successful for Austrian anglers, Walter Schuster and Thomas Kritz, who caught a 7 & 6 lbs. salmon respectively. Kevin Lynch and his 10 year old son Tom (pictured) caught 3 salmon, This was Tom’s first salmon and weighed in at 4.5 lbs. The East Mayo water produced some good fishing over the week with Louise Otto from Germany catching a 4 lbs fish while UK angler, Garry James, banked 3 fish for 4, 8 & 10 lbs.

Lough Conn

Weather over the week was unsettled with heavy showers and strong winds. Approximately 57 anglers reported 45 trout for 71 rod days for the week.

Popular fly patterns were the Octopus, Golden Olive Bumble and the Green Peter.

Jack Mellett had 2 trout for 1.2 lbs. and 1 lbs. respectively. Tim Deasy, Castlebar also had 2 trout for 2.5 lbs. Seamus Kelly, Cloghans and boat partner caught 6 trout all over the 12” size limit and all were returned. Austrian anglers, Hugo Mitzel and Bederic Mirac, caught 3 trout for a day.

Ballisodare River

During the week an improvement in the numbers of salmon arriving was observed and this was particularly the case at Ballisodare where 166 salmon were caught with 117 returned. Although the majority of these were small fish coinciding with the start of the grilse run several 10 lbs. plus salmon were taken.

Benny Henry had a fine 12 lbs. salmon on the fly while a visiting French angler also had a 12 lbs. fish to the prawn. Local angler, Gerry McHugh had a 7 lbs. fish on the fly while Jimmy Cuffe caught and released two grilse during an evening’s fishing.

Lough Furnace

Angling on Lough Furnace picked up during the week. In total 12 salmon were caught. The most productive flies were the Ally’s Cascade and the Green Peter.

Benard Wojnar, Dublin had some fantastic fishing, catching 4 salmon on the day. Fourteen year old David Healy, Derry caught his first ever salmon, a 4 lbs. grilse.

Owenmore

The rain over the week kick started angling on the Owenmore River. Eight salmon were caught with some fine fish to 10 lbs. Dublin angler, Rory Murray, and local angler, John Reynolds, both had fish of 10 lbs. while John also had a grilse.

Newport River

Fishing was good on the Newport River during the week with a fantastic 16 lbs fish caught and released by Oliver Corcoran. Later in the week Oliver also landed two nice fish which weighed in at 9 and a 10 lbs. Eamon Kennedy  banked two fine fish of 10 and 11.5 lbs.

Moy Estuary

Angling on the Moy Estuary remains extremely good with anglers reporting good catches of sea trout. Northern Irish angler Raymond Boyce and friend caught 9 trout on mackerel strip. Albert Roche and family enjoyed some very good fishing, catching 12 trout on mackerel strip.

Ballin Lough

Few anglers fished Ballin Lough this week but those that did were rewarded with good sport. Anthony Baggott and Philip McGoldrick, Castlebar caught 4 trout, best at 3.5 lbs. Ronan Greane and John O’Malley boated 7 trout, their best, a fine 4.5 lbs fish.

Lough Doon

Lough Doon fished well with anglers catching good numbers of fish. While the average size of the trout is on the small side, the quality of these hard fighting wild trout is excellent.

Lynsey Clarke reports:

RIVER DROWES – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th June 2008.

The Drowes remains fairly low but has risen by a few inches with the onset of some rainy weather over the week. While this is not the desired flood per say, it encouraged a good run of grilse into the fishery (or maybe they couldn’t wait any longer!) There were good numbers of grilse recorded for the week with all the fish ranging in size from 2 to 4 lbs. The rods staying for the week in the angling cottages caught on a regular basis. Two Swiss visitors recorded 8 grilse for the week caught mainly on fly. Alan Lawrence and Colin Berryman accounted for 11 grilse caught on fly & shrimp. On Sunday, Darryl Kennedy recorded 2 grilse caught, Gary Morrow accounted for a grilse and two English anglers recorded a couple of grilse caught from the Washstones. The forecast is for wet weather for the coming week and hopefully this will be sufficient to raise water levels further.

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th June 2008.

Trout angling reports from Lough Melvin this week were of poor fishing with decent trout hard to come by. The Lough remains at very low levels although it has risen by a couple of inches. There were also very few anglers fishing for salmon throughout the week and so little to report except for a fine salmon caught on the fly on Sunday however. The fish weighed 22 lbs. and was caught on a Green Peter fly by a Swiss angler from the Mruier party staying at Lareen. Apparently it took them a number of hours to land and had to be beached since their trout net was certainly not up to the task! Unfortunately there are no pictures of the same.

The Rossinver Anglers ran their annual 2 day salmon & trout competition over Saturday & Sunday. 19 rods fished over the two days. There were however no salmon caught (probably due to the very low lough?) and with the trout fishing being poor, only 7 trout were caught of sufficient size to count. The competition was decided thus on the heaviest trout. Anthony McHugh took first place with a fish of 0.79 kg. In second place came Seamus O’Dare with a fish of 0.77 kg. and in third place was Dermot Seymour with a fish of 0.72 kg. The annual barbeque was held on the Sunday evening and enjoyed by all with good weather prevailing. There was little worry of a lack of fish since I hear the steaks were superb!

OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th June 2008.

The Owenea ran at fair levels this week and there were a couple of floods over the week. One flood on Monday, with the river reaching 0.25 metres and a better flood on Wednesday reading 0.37 metres on the gauge. The gauge average for the week read 0.23 metres.  A good figure after two months of low water! 39 visiting rods fished for the week spread throughout the week. There were a number of salmon caught and we await details of the same. On Monday, Gordon Young accounted for a 9½ lbs. salmon caught on a spinner from Brian’s Pool on beat 8. John Joe O’Doherty accounted for a 4½ lbs. grilse.

The forecast for the coming week is for wet weather and so hopefully we will have good water levels.

EANY FISHERY – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th June 2008.

There were some decent floods on the Eany this week at last! Although these weren’t big floods, they were sufficient to bring fish into the river and good numbers of salmon ascended the river. The gauge average for the week read 0.51 metres. The fishery was much busier and there were 23 visiting rods fishing over the week. The fishing really began in earnest and we have our first salmon recorded this week. There were 4 salmon caught on Wednesday and I have yet to establish which fish was first since I present I do not know at what time of day each fish was caught. Danny Breslin accounted for a fine 12 lbs. salmon caught the Devils Pool on a spinner. A visiting rod accounted for an 8 lbs. fish caught on the spinner from Bonnyglen Falls and Jed Cole also landed a salmon at Bonnyglen. Henry McAreavy recorded a 4 lbs. grilse caught from the Corry on a fly. On Thursday, Patsy McHugh landed a 12 lbs. salmon and on Saturday, Jodie O’Neill accounted for an 8 lb salmon caught on the Lower Devlin.

The forecast is for wet weather so hopefully we will receive good water over the coming week.

Lionel Knobbs, Loughs Agency Angling Manager reports:

Foyle Rivers

Water levels have increased after the recent rainfall and we are getting a very positive upstream fish movement, mainly on the river Finn.

Water levels are fluctuating today and this often results in poor fishing.  Fishing tends to be best when the water is fining down on many of the Foyle Rivers.  Regardless of the conditions, fish are now reported from rivers throughout the catchment.

I have received many reports of Salmon and Sea Trout being caught yesterday and I am sure angling will improve steadily over the next few days.

Visiting fly fishing anglers from Scotland landed 8 Salmon on the upper sections of the river Mourne.  Three of the salmon weighed over 8 lbs.

Local angler Brendan Winters caught a 3.5 lbs. Grilse on Flying C at Sion Mills section of the River Mourne.  Paddy McAleer landed a 5 lb Grilse on a Gold Shrimp Fly from the Newtownstewart section of the river.  Kirin McLaughlin, from L’Derry fishing with an Apachie fly, landed 2 Grilse from the mid sections of the River Finn and Timmy Brown, from Ballybofey using Allys Gold Shrimp fly, landed a fresh run 8 lbs. Grilse from the same section of river.

The River Dennet, traditionally known as a Sea Trout river, has began to produce growing numbers of fish this week with Sea Trout reported from the tidal section upstream to a number of the main holding pool and streams.

Cashel Trout Fishery

Dries and buzzers did the most catching but saying that the assorted lures hooked a few also.  Arnold Boreland and Don Mc Closkey (Limavady) had 18 and 13 trout respectively.  Derry’s Billy Hazlett, using an 8 ft 4# line did exceedingly well banking 8 brilliant trout on Parachutes and Klinkhammers.  Billy took 2 trout home, which weighed a total of 6 lbs. 14 ozs.  Maghera’s B, Mellon used Buzzers and Dries and banked himself 7 great trout while William Gamble (Derry) and Ciaran Duncan (Limavady) had 5 and 4 trout using Dries, yellow cat’s whiskers.  Padraic Dalzell (Derry) also released 5 great trout which were fooled by an Ace of Spades, and his mate Thomas Campbell, (Derry) released 2 trout which took a Green and Yellow Lure.  Dylan Brown (Limavady) released 3 trout one of which was 8 lb using a black lure. Limavady’s Paddy Guyler banked three great trout which took a GH Pink Fritz. Ciaran Guy (Limavady), Tony Marshall (Moneymore), Paul Rathfield! (Limavady), Shaun Duggan (Gulladuff) and Steven Canavan (Bellaghy) all banked 2 trout each some of which were nearing the double figures.  They were using a mixture of flies like the Orange Blob, Wets and Dries.  Mark Deighan (Limavady), Kevin Burke (Limavady), Adrian Guy (Limavady), Joe Donnelly (Limavady), Niall Murray (Limavady), Kenny Cupples, Kyle Gamble and Melvin Martin (Limavady) all managed to bank at least 1 trout each.

Anglers Insight

Water levels are now returning to a reasonable level but if the rain keeps on falling at the current rate they could reach very high levels quickly.  With heavy rain forecast for parts of the weekend we will have difficult high water conditions for anglers on the lower sections of many of our rivers.  I recommend you try your luck on some of our smaller rivers.  Move to the upper sections of our main rivers and when water clarity is less than favourable try increasing the size of the Fly you normally use and even try brighter patterns.

Regardless of what methods or location, it is very important to remember the rivers in the Foyle catchments are spate and can rise very rapidly. All anglers must be careful particularly when wading and evermore so if you are unfamiliar with the section of river you intend to fish especially if it is a section you are fishing for the first time this season.  Remember river beds are always moving and can change significantly over the winter months.  I suggest you don’t wade unless you are familiar with the riverbed and use a wading stick and always wear a life jacket.

I often mention to anglers the afternoon I was fishing from t
he river bank and an angler was standing out in the middle of the river with the water up to the top of his chest waders.  I fished the area of water between him and the river bank and landed two salmon in quick succession.  He had not touched a fish in many hours of trying.  The man then decided to move to the edge of the river and try his luck and soon afterwards hooked a Salmon casting into the area he was wading!  So you don’t always have to wade and remember the first big flood of the season carries added risks as it tends to bring with it all the debris like fallen trees that have been sitting high and dry over the extended dry spell. Don’t risk it.  Always be extra careful in flood conditions.

UPPER SHANNON

COARSE FISHING ON THE SHANNON AT LANESBORO…

Fishing was been very quiet generally in the Lanesboro. There were a few isolated reports. Mr Deakin from Derby fished the hot water and had 20 lbs. of Bream and Perch. A few anglers from Mullingar fished on Monday and had about 20 lbs. of Bream also.  The only other angling evident was from transient boat traffic along the river.

Paul Waghorn a regular to Lanesboro has recently launched a dedicated website on fishing in the area. This can be viewed at http://www.lanesboroughangling.ie/

Brian Bohan   CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE  MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNO

The lads from Yorkshire enjoyed a great week in the area with some nice catches of Bream and Tench.

Michael Hollis, Jock Daston and Herbert Johnson spent 3 days on one lake fishing for  Tench and young 17 year old Michael faired the best out of the three doing very well with 12 nice Tench one of which was just over specimen weight at 6 lbs 10 oz. Jud swift , Steve Hollis and Alan Thompson had their eye on Bream for the week and concentrated on two venues one of which I had pre-baited for a few evenings, These were very dedicated anglers and all six anglers would release each fish as they caught them but they did hold some Bream for me to take a photo.

Overall the fishing has been quite good around North Longford, Strokestown and Gowna areas, with lots of Skimmers, Hybrids, Roach and Tench showing with a few good Bream catches with fish to 5lbs. Pre-baiting and the early starts did help and due to weather conditions ground bait feeder tactics worked best. So see next weeks report and pictures of some good Bream, Hybrids and Roach catches.

Chris Lesak was on his first visit to Ireland along with friend Mick who had already experienced the fishing in Ireland, Kevin commented that the lads had a good week catching just about every species there was to catch and having some good nets of fish. They had some good Tench catches and Chris even managed to catch one from a well known Bream spot which was unusual from this location.

Eddie, John and Richard from Walsal were on their first fishing trip to Ireland and stayed with Kevin and Jane Lyons of Melview Lodge in Longford. It was not a bad week for the lads as they were able to catch plenty of Skimmers, Hybrids and Roach. They were all rewarded with Bream over the last few days of their holiday. Kevin commented that the lads enjoyed their visit and I’m sure they will return here again soon.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report Dated 30th June 2008 ….

After lots of showers during the week the weather cleared at the weekend. The river level at Shannonbridge reads 2.21 metres despite the rain.

A canal overseer tells me that the weed-cutting machine has reached Clononey and Shannonharbour. He reckoned that the operators did a good job in cutting the centre weeds and maintaining the water lilies and wild crocus and other bankside fauna.

On 25th June Joe Maddock from Oldham fished the Hot Water stretch in the rain using maggot and sweetcorn to catch 4 Bream and three hybrids. Next day he fished the same stretch again in the rain and caught 20 Roach and 3 Perch.

Philip Oxendale from Oldham also fished the Hot Water on the same rainy days. On 25th June he caught Bream and Tench and loads of Roach for a bag of
30 lbs. Next day on maggot he had just Roach biting but he had good crack but wet.

Warren Maddock from Oldham recorded three days catches. On 23rd June in the rain at the Hot Water he fished with maggot and sweetcorn and caught 10lbs of Bream and nothing else. On 25th June Warren fished with sweetcorn and caught 20 hybrids with best fish weighing 1.5 lbs. Next day he fished the same swim in the rain using maggot and caster to catch 40 hybrids with four of them weighing 2 lbs each.

Local angler Gerry Casey recorded that on 19th June fishing in shallows at Shannonbridge on a calm sunny evening using float and maggot while loose feeding he caught 10 Rudd all around the 1.5 lbs. mark. His best Rudd fishing for years.

Martin Murray from Ballinasloe fished the Hot Water stretch at Shannonbridge on 24th June in the rain using maggot and float to catch two good Tench of 4 lbs – 11 oz. each plus loads of Perch. There were some fish attacked by Pike.

Bill Ryan, angling guide in west Clare reports on some recent shore fishing in the region

Strong winds and big tides making shore fishing difficult

Clare Area – Shore Angling Report to July 1st, 2008

The strong winds and big tides during the week made fishing very difficult. However when the weather is wild on the western side shelter can be found on the eastern or Shannon Estuary side.

Star of the trip for UK anglers were the Tope in an otherwise mixed week

Report dated July 2nd …

the forecast was right and as I feared when I wrote my report last week the weather has indeed been grim. I only got 1 days fishing out of the last 7 outside the estuary. Even that was under a cloud (so to speak!) as the forecast was giving the winds freshen and I did not want to get too far from shelter.

I had a group in from England for 4 days and they were lucky to get the one day out on the reefs. Fishing was fine with a good mix coming to the boat. The rest of their trip was saved by the fact that we have sheltered water somewhere in all winds and the star of their trip were the Tope. On 2 days we had good fishing at slack water with 11 Tope in all, though not all were landed. Indeed the fishing might have been better but we were late to a Tope mark because of the difficulty in getting fresh Mackerel. Although showing signs of moving up river last week, Mackerel have proved hard to get in any numbers in sheltered water this week. We also kept the ball rolling with a few Ray and Dogfish, so that trip was okay but not what it should be at this time of the year.

On Friday I had a charter out with part of a group that had been out shore fishing in the area all week. They arrived on board complete with some Mackerel caught early that morning from the cliffs near Kilkee. Armed with this bait I headed, after a short stop to try and top up the Mackerel, to a tope mark that had fished well the day b
efore. However the wind was blowing more from the west and it was quite rough. I did manage to hold with the help of 2 anchors but the boat was moving a lot and unfortunately no Tope obliged. Later in the day I tried east of Scattery island but fishing was still slow.

At this stage (Monday) it looks as if the weather, or at least the winds, might die down from midweek and I think both my sanity and the fishing needs it!!

Kevin Crowley reports:

James Linnane from the Lisdoonvarna Fanore Sea angling Club reports on a recent competition held at Ballyreen, north Clare. 25 anglers competed and a total of 178 fish were recorded. The previous two competitions yielded only 16 and 19 fish respectively, so the fishing is much improved. First place was taken by Michael Curtin of Kinvara with 31 fish for 469 points.  Second was Andreas Shefzig from Doolin with 26 fish for 390 points, and third was Stephen McCormack from Lahinch, with 15 fish for 221 points. Fourth was Joe Birney from Clarecastle with 13 fish for 195 points, and the best Junior was Paul Norton from Ruan with 13 fish for 195 points. Species recorded included Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Conger Eel, Thornback Ray, Wrasse, and Pollack. It seems most fish were caught at distance, so the better casters figured prominently, and its good to sea shore angling picking up again.

Antrim.  Richard was fishing with Hamish and using mackerel and a wire trace he landed a 22 lbs. 1 oz. Spurdog which is 9 oz. bigger than the current Irish Record held by Charlie Robinson at Dun Laoghaire in 2001. Richard will be making a claim to the Irish Specimen Fish Committee (http://www.irish-trophy-fish.com/ ) for a new Irish Record. Richard also had a specimen black mouth dogfish of 2 lbs. 6 oz and another specimen spurdog was caught along with a fine specimen conger of 47 lbs 3 oz.  All the fish came from the deep water south of sanda island on the Scottish side 427ft.
