Paddy Whelan Rathfarnham Dublin on the Boyne 5th July06

By: Marc O’Regan – Contact –

It’s not too often you have the pleasure to guide for a true blue Dubliner and today was the first for me. Paddy Whelan one of nature’s gentlemen had a bash at the Boyne. Not being a great lover of herbivores our choices were limited to some quiet out of the way places all of which were decided over lunch. This day was always going to be a cultured one with first class conversation and the odd yarn added to spice things up. I could see from Paddy’s first reaction to the Boyne that he was measuring it just like a pro golfer would a strange course and with a wry look he said “go on there young fella and show me how it’s done”. I felt like a bit like Butch Harmon would if Tiger Woods said to him “show me how it’s done”. Luck being with me I had 4 fish to 1 lb and mighty relieved to have done so. Many hours throughout the day were spent discussing fly patterns, modern fly fishing techniques, entomology and family. A total of 8 fish were caught and subsequently returned to the water safely, it was a wonderful day on the Boyne with a true Dubliner.

From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net
Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/
26/6/06 One Salmon caught on the troll by Mr Peter Liddle fishing with his Gillie Mr Neil O’Shea of oshealoughcurrane@eircom.net and Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a Grilse with his German guests, on the Sea Trout front Mr Pat Ross of Fort Lauderdale USA had a catch and release of a fine Sea trout of 4 lbs. with his Gillie Mr Roger Baker of www.cloghvoola.com and just for the record their Sea Trout were caught on the Fly. Wind northeast light to fresh with bright sunshine all day.
27/6/06 a very bright and sunny day with very light to calm southwest wind, but at least one boat did see action and that was Mr Peter Liddle and his friend who caught a Grilse on the troll with their Gillie Mr Neil O’Shea of oshealoughcurrane@eircom.net on the Sea Trout front there was the odd Sea Trout caught but nothing that ITN would broadcast.
28/6/06 One Grilse caught on the troll by two Guests fishing with their Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly and on the Sea Trout front Mr Brad McCraken of Kamaloops, B.C. returned a Sea Trout of 1.5 lbs. Brad was fishing with his Gillie Mr Roger Baker of www.cloghvoola.com there were also a few juniors caught. Wind southwest fresh and overcast all day with light misty rain all afternoon.
29/6/06 It made a small flood this morning and by 4 pm there was a nice drop of water coming down the Mouth of the Commeragh which should make for good fishing tomorrow but there was only one top Angler today that was young Master Thomas Nugent Of Kilkenny who caught a fine 10 lbs. Salmon on the troll and he finished the day off with a fine Sea Trout in the Mouth of the Commeragh and he also contacted five more but all come off, all I can say is he must have the professional touch because the rest of we so called professional Anglers failed miserably on our duties. Thomas was fishing with his Gillie Mr Mike O’Dwyer. On the Sea Trout front there was one Specimen Sea Trout of 6 lbs. plus caught by Mr David Lawler fishing out of www.lakelandshouse.com and I see in the Lakelands fishing log book Renée has had some good catches in the last few days of two Sea Trout in the 4 lbs. class and a few Juniors. Wind southeast with the odd strong gust in the morning then veered southwest in the afternoon light to fresh all day. Air temperature 4pm 18C/64F water temperature at the Ledge in the Mouth of the Commeragh 19.6C/67F.
30/6/06 the Lake rose a few inches due to the flood yesterday but today my Noble gentlemen were keeping there heads well down during the day but come evening Mr John Scott of the UK and Paris, France caught a fine Grilse 3.5 lbs. and a Sea Trout of 1 ¼ lbs. on the Fly in the Mouth of the Commeragh with his Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com and staying with Mr Scott I would like to thank him for the Bold but good advice he gave me.  Staying in the Sea Trout department René was in good form again with two Sea Trout and both were over 4 lbs.  He is some Angler.  Mr David O’Hagan caught a 2 lbs Sea Trout on the drift.  Wind southwest light to fresh all day with plenty of sun breaking through. Water temperature deep out from the Mouth of the Commeragh 18.6C/65F air temperature 24.2C/75F.
1/7/06 There was some good action in the Mouth of the Commeragh where Mr Tom Duggan and his Grandson Master Thomas Nugent caught three Grilse on the fly or put it this way Granddad 2 Grandson 1 and their Gillie Mr Mike O’Dwyer was telling me in the four days they had fishing they also caught nine Sea Trout, and staying with Sea Trout, in the Mouth of the Commeragh Mr Tom O’Shea with his guests caught a fine Sea Trout of 4.5 lbs. on the fly and they also had a few catch and releases. Also in good form was Mr Blick of Germany who caught a Grilse of 3 lbs. Wind southwest fresh to strong for most of the day and overcast which made for good fishing conditions.
2/7/06 There were three Salmon caught on the day.  Mr Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at lobsterb@iol.ie caught a Salmon with his Guests and Mr Bob priestly had an 8.5 lbs Salmon with his Guest and an Angler out by him self caught a fine Salmon. There were a few Sea Trout caught but nothing that would hit the head lines. Wind north west light to fresh bright and sunny all day. That is all the news from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery. No Spin no Fly’s just Facts.

WRFB Angling Report 4 July 2006

GALWAY WEIR
It was the best week of the year so far in Galway, with 145 salmon landed for the week, including 101 fish to the fly. Warm weather and bright conditions didn’t seem to bother the fish, and fishermen had a superb week. Many anglers had 2, 3 or more fish, with a good few released to fight again. Among the anglers to land fish were Tony Kavanagh from Galway, who caught and released 3, Brian O’Rourke from Tuam, who had 4, including 2 released, Dexter Lynas who kept 3 and put 1 back, and Gary Kilroy, who had 3, including a fine grilse of 7.5 lbs. Northern visitor Peter Simpson had 3, as did Ennis man Patrick Cotter, and local man Padraic Fahy had 4, releasing 2. Louis van Beck from Mullingar landed 2 nice fish, as did Des Bluett, French angler Marc de Veletian, Cork man Frank Wallace, and Ennis man Gus Murphy. Young anglers Conor Quinn from Loughrea and Lairgnen McDermott from Moycullen had a great morning on Saturday, both landing fine grilse, and Spanish visitor Mrs. Jose Maquiera Cores had 2 salmon on shrimp, including the best fish of the week, a beautiful fresh 10-pounder.
With the river receiving runs of grilse on every tide and water conditions perfect for fishing, prospects for the coming week are excellent.

LOUGH MASK
There were small hatches of sedge and buzzer over the week on Mask, with fishing described as fair to good at times. 11 anglers reported 18 trout in 16 rod-days for approx. 30 lbs, with wetfly and dry fly both accounting for fish. Although very few anglers were fishing, there was a good movement of trout on a few days when conditions were suitable. Billy Graham from Northern Ireland and his brother had 7 trout for 7.5 lbs in 3 days to wetfly, with their best fish 2.5 lbs. Rod Tye and 2 anglers fished wetfly for 1 day and had 6 trout for 10 lbs approx., with all fish released unharmed. Frank Smythe from Drogheda fished the Cong Canal, and landed a fine trout of 9.46 lbs on a Pheasant Tail Nymph.

LOUGH CARRA
There were fairly good hatches of sedge, damselflies and buzzers on Carra, and fishing was fair, confined mainly to the evenings. 9 anglers reported 6 trout in 10 rod-days for 11 lbs. approx, with damselfly nymphs, Green Peters, Murroughs and buzzers all taking fish. Very few anglers fished the lake, and good numbers of sizeable trout were reported moving in the late evening. Philip Gresham and Sean Coyne from Castlebar had 2 trout for 4 lbs. in 1 day to wetfly. Rod Tye had 1 trout for 1.5lbs to wetfly, and saw lots of good trout feeding on damselfly nymphs, and Gerry Dean from Castlebar had a fine trout of 3 lbs. 7 oz fishing wetfly in the evening time.

LOUGH INAGH
Fishery manager Colin Folan reports from Inagh: Water levels are low at present, but there has been a good run of fish into Lough Inagh last week.  Weather conditions are not helping the cause either but anglers are still enjoying good sport on the lough.  The next flood should see the main run of grilse and sea trout into the system.
John Connolly (Mayo) fished the river beats for three days and had four sea trout to 1.75 lbs, two browns to 1.25 lbs and a fresh grilse of 6lbs in poor weather conditions.  The salmon took a size 12 Silver Badger and was caught on the Derryclare Butts.
Brothers Aidan & Peter Kelly from Galway fished Inagh on a very bright and calm day but still managed to boat 13 browns and 1 sea trout. Green Peter and Claret and Mallard were best flies for the lads.  Most fish weighed 0.75 lbs – 1.25 lbs.
Kevin Cronin (Dublin) fished Inagh for a morning and caught a beautiful 2lbs sea trout and two 14 inch browns. The three fish took a size 12 Blue Clan Chief fished on an intermediate line. Anto Walsh and P. Ryan (Dublin) had five sea trout to 1.5 lbs on a Peter Ross and Jungle Bunny. Info and bookings; Colin Folan, Lough Inagh Lodge Hotel, 095 34706, 086 8679459, inagh@iol.ie

Vincent Roche reports:

  Angling Report – w/e 2 July, 2006
River Moy

Reasonable numbers of grilse started to arrive in the Moy this week and the system produced its best week so far with 688 fish recorded.  With water levels continuing to fall, the Moy Fishery, at Ballina, fared best with 172 salmon (mainly grilse) recorded for the week. However, despite the low water, some grilse continued to run the system and fresh grilse were caught right up to Cloongee. The Weir Pool (at the top of the Ridge Pool) continued to fish well and yielded 30 fish for the week. Lars Friebertshauser, Germany had 3 on the fly all of which he released. The Ridge Pool produced 97 for the week. Michael Halszajn, Scotland, caught 5 of which he released 2 and Gary Perks, England, caught 5 of which he released 4. On the Cathedral Beat, Michael Halszajn also caught 3 of which he released 2. On Mount Falcon, Gerard Garnier, France, caught 8 salmon over 5 days with the best at 8 lbs.  On Byrne’s Fishery, Colin O’Dell and Mick Standon, England, had 13 salmon for the week, on worm, with the best at 8 lbs. The Foxford Fishery also had a good week with some bigger fish caught as well as grilse.  Robert McLoughlin had one at 10.5 lbs. as well as one at 5 lbs., both on worm. Cloongee produced 28 for the week including 3 for Nick Davis, England, of which he released 2. East Mayo also had a good week with the best fish, at 12 lbs. falling to Bart Denndy on worm.

Moy Estuary

The estuary enjoyed a reasonable week with 62 Sea Trout reported and many more returned. Most were taken on sand eel but some anglers enjoyed good sport with the fly.

Lough Conn

Trout fishing was quiet on Conn this week with most of the activity centred on trolling for salmon. Fourteen grilse were reported but a number of trout anglers also enjoyed success. Michael McNee, Co. Kilkenny had 5 trout over two days on old reliables, the Green Peter and Bibio. Martin Kearns, also from Kilkenny, had 3 for 4.5 lbs., best at 3.5 lbs. on buzzer. Geoff Sheerin, Co. Offaly had 5 trout with all just over 1 lb. and taken on spent gnat and octopus. Eddie Stewart and son, from Wales, had 14 trout over a few days with the best at 2 lbs. and most of the others returned. A total of 75 trout, weighing 67 lbs., were reported by 63 anglers for 90 rod days.

Ballisodare River

Ballisodare produced 215 salmon for the week with the majority of these taken below the falls due to the low water levels. The catch consisted mostly of small grilse but a few bigger fish were also taken. J. McDavitt caught a nice 9 lbs. salmon on shrimp and Ian Jinks had a 6 lbs. fish on the fly.

Lough Bo

This stocked lake, near Lough Arrow, is proving popular again this year with young and old. A group of young anglers from the Riverstown area enjoyed good sport this week. Brian Markham, Daniel Hargadon, Rory McDermot and Jason Scott all caught trout ranging from 1 lb to 1.5 lbs. the fish of the week. However, the fish of the week was taken by regular angler, Thomas Higgins, who landed a fine trout of 4.75 lbs on worm.

Carrowmore Lake

Fishing was slow on Carrowmore due to the bright, sunny conditions. Just 4 grilse reported including one each for Michal Noone and Jimmy Doherty.

Lough Beltra
Beltra produced some fish again. Ben Baynes had a small grilse, Kieran Thompson had another and Jackie Deffely had a salmon weighing 8 lbs.

Burrishoole Fishery

Fishing was quite lively on Burrishoole this week with 12 salmon reported, mostly wild fish and all released.  Michael Healy and Pat Cowley had 4, Martin McCoy, Gerard Roche, Christopher Ryan and Pat Hughes had 1 each.

Ballin Lough

Angling was quiet on Ballin Lough with the bright weather not helping mattes. Just 10 trout were reported but the lake is known to hold a good stock of trout and anglers reported seeing good numbers of fish moving. Tom Davin had 5 for his day and another angler had 3 with the heaviest at 3 lbs. To book a boat on Ballin Lough, contact Mrs. Gill, beside the lake, on 098-26128

Lynsey Clarke reports:
RIVER DROWES – Monday 26th June to Sunday 2nd July 2006.

Water levels still remain fairly low on the Drowes and the salmon angling has been limited to early morning and late evening when anglers have been catching grilse on the fly and worm. The bright conditions and low water have made angling at other times of the day somewhat testing. A party of English anglers staying at Lareen accounted for 5 grilse for the week to 4 lb.

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 26th June to Sunday 2nd July 2006.

Trout angling has been somewhat dour on Lough Melvin this week. The bright and ‘heavy’ weather allied too little in the way of fly hatching made for difficult angling conditions. The depth sounder showed that fish were very low down in the water column for the most part. Sunday morning produced a few trout for those that ventured out up until lunch time when the Lough ‘went dead’.
The salmon fishing has been good however with good numbers of grilse recorded for the week caught on the troll on mainly Toby’s. The average is high at a little over 1 fish per boat per day. The fish are all mainly from 4 to 5½ lb. Ernie Louden and Rodney Benson had a good days fishing on Wednesday recording 4 grilse weighing from 4 to 5¼ lbs.

EANYWATER FISHERY – Monday 26th June to Sunday 2nd July 2006.

The Eany was very low for the week except for a medium flood of 0.65 metres on Thursday which dropped away again to very low water by Sunday. The gauge average for the week reads 0.21 metres. Yet another low reading! Despite the small flood on Thursday, only 1 visiting angler was fishing for the week. This was Dimitrios Kandiotos who fished on Sunday and recorded a 4 lbs. grilse caught from below Bonnyglen Falls.

ESKE FISHERY – Monday 26th June to Sunday 2nd July 2006.

Water levels on the Eske fishery were low all week except for a small rise on Friday which gave fair conditions on the river though the bright breezy conditions were not conducive to good salmon angling. Indeed, the conditions were bright for most of the week which did not suit angling on the Lough either as was evidenced by only 1 visiting angler fishing the Lough.  Local angler John Hanna recorded an 7 lbs. salmon caught on the fly from the Lough.

OWENEA RIVER – Monday 26th June to Sunday 2nd July 2006.

The Owenea River was similarly low for the week except for a small flood of 0.25 metres on Friday. The gauge average for the week gives a low reading of 0.18 metres. The dry, bright and breezy weather did not make for ideal angling conditions. Despite the unfavourable conditions 24 visiting anglers fished the fishery for the week. I am still awaiting confirmation of catches.

Cashel Trout Fishery
Report by Marlene Mc Laughlin.

With the dry bright conditions some anglers are finding things a little bit difficult, however, this is not the case for young Brian Canavan from (Bellaghy) using Buzzers and Dries, Brian managed to bank a total of fourteen trout some of them weighing into double figures. Stephen Wilson (Ballinderry) bagged two weighing almost 4 lbs. which took a Parachute fly while Aidy Askin (Culmore) managed to bank two trout which took Suspender Buzzers. Friends, Rory Morrin and Darren Crawford released a total of three trout but unfortunately lost a big one, which weighed approximately six or seven pounds. Shane Lockhead (Limavady) banked two real good ones, which took Buzzers while Richard Pentland (Londonderry) landed the one, which took a CDC, before the midges sent him home. Friends, Bertie, Liz, Jennifer and Colin from Bangor paid a visit to Cashel but unfortunately they were unlucky and didn’t land any trout but saw many being caught.

Breakfast is now being served at Cashel in the comfort of an open log fire with plenty of craic.  Group bookings most welcome during the week.

Tight lines for next weekend and fingers crossed for a tagged trout.

REPORT FROM MIKE RISDON RECEIVED ON MONDAY THE 26TH OF JUNE 2006

The many anglers due to arrive at the Lee Valley this week will have problems finding anywhere to fish as the water level has come right up again and the few anglers around last week caught very little perhaps due to the coolish weather. Curraghalicky Lake seems to be off form also with just a few small skimmers showing. Visiting anglers have been travelling to fish Fermoy reservoir for tench and bream and the R. Blackwater at Mallow for the roach and dace with some success but overall the fishing is fairly poor.

UPPER SHANNON
ShRFB Reports for the Upper Shannon Region
A party of anglers from Castleford Leeds reported up to 100 lbs bags of mainly hybrids and some perch down stream of the bridge on the Roscommon bank at Lanesboro.  A shoal of fish is clearly visible under the bridge.  Paul Waghorn had 25 lbs. mixed fish in two short sessions here also.  Kilnacarrow upstream of Lanesboro on the Shannon is a good bet this time of year in peaceful surroundings and is worth fishing for a few hours.
Kevin Lyons, MELVIEW LODGE GUESTHOUSE, Drumlish Road, Clonrollagh, Co Longford Tel : 003534345061 Email:  info@melviewlodge.com Web: http://www.melviewlodge.com  covering fisheries in the LONGFORD AREA and the STROKESTOWN LAKES
The fishing overall has been good around the Strokestown and North Longford areas. Daily individual weights varied from 15 lbs to 75 lbs. Catches included large Bream to 8 lbs. 2 oz, Hybrids, Roach and Tench. Most lakes will need pre-baiting due to the lack of anglers on the ground which is highly recommended. You may find that you have a lake all to yourselves, so get some bait in there and you could see some great results over the space of a few days.
Angling guests of Melview Lodge Dave Barrett and his girlfriend Tracy from Durham had some great catches of Bream, Tench, Hybrids and Roach. Kevin decided to take them on a Tench mission.  Kevin lightly pre-baited the swim the night before and departed at 4 am the following morning.  The first cast for Kevin produced a cracking roach to 2 lbs but David seemed to be getting a lot of line bites. They started to catch Bream, Roach, Rudd and Hybrids, everything but Tench which was what they were targeting. David then struck into this fish that gave his rod bending action, thinking it was a large Tench. About 8 minutes later he brought the fish to the surface which turned out to be a specimen sized Bream which had fallen to three reds maggots feeder fished at twenty yards.  David had good sport and will return to try for some large Tench.
Robert and Stan other guests also had an enjoyable week with Kevin and Jane at Melview Lodge in Longford. They put together some good weights; best bag 55 lbs of Bream, Roach and Hybrids.
MID SHANNON AREA
The ShRFB reports for Ray Duthie Old Forge Banagher, Bait Stockist, Tackle and ACCOMMODATION PROVIDER  Tel: 057 9151504.  BANAGHER area this week.
Again the problem this week is lack of anglers which is a pity as fishing has improved. Four visitors reported lots of skimmer bream on the Salmon Run and very bagging 30 lbs. on average at a sitting. Good Tench fishing was reported from the Boora Ponds in Co Offaly.
ShRFB reports for the RIVER SUCK VALLEY – Mid River Suck
7 youths supervised by an Adult Adolescent Support Project in Athenry, headed by Gerry Prior had great fun with lots of fish mainly skimmer Bream on Lough Loung in the River Suck Valley. These anglers are all beginners and were tutored by leading match angler and instructor Bill Cassidy from Glenamaddy.

HANNON SAND AND GRAVEL – CHILDREN’S FISHING COMPETITION
The Hannon Sand and Gravel Children’s Fishing Competition took place on the promenade last Sunday and attracted a large entry with sixty five kids taking part. The weather was excellent and the fishing was good and with all the Mums, Dads and Grandmas and Granddads giving advice. It was no time at all before the kids were bringing Perch, Bream and Roach to the scales while the only Eel caught on the day managed to wriggle his way to freedom before he could be weighed in. The Cup for the largest Perch in the Boys section was awarded to Tiernan Monaghan for his perch which weighed in at 5 ozs. while the Girls section was won by Laura Kelly for her Perch which weighed 2.5 ozs. The Cup for other species was awarded to Neill Unwin for a Roach which weighed 1 lbs. 1 ozs. and all the other participants were awarded trophies for taking part and everybody went home happy.
Sincere thanks to Connor Hannon of Hannon sand and Gravel who gave very generous sponsorship for this competition and also to Anthony Quinn for supplying the ground bait and the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board for a €50 Gift Voucher. Thanks also to the hard working social committee for organising the event and to all the club members who came along and helped out on the day.

ShRFB reports for Mark Egan Athlone Bait Stockist, Accommodation Provider Email:  info@shannonsidehouse.com Website www.shannonsidehouse.com  Tel: 090 64 94773 Mob 087 8517299 – the River Shannon and Inny ATHLONE area.
Two anglers from the north of England, Dave Close and son fished the River Inny at Tom Foxes and had great Bream fishing there, with lots of fish averaging 3 lbs to 4 lbs. Two other guests from York, Danny Carpenter and friend Yaun fished over night on the River Suck at Ballyforan and had very good bags of mixed fish, with plenty of Bream showing in the catches – they were very pleased. One member of the group had a very large hybrid, the best he’s ever recorded. Prospects look good again this week.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report….Dated 3rd July 2006.
The weather remained generally good for fishing with the occasional sunny spells that seemed to make the fish more aware. The river level today is 2.21 Metres on the gauge at Shannonbridge.
Cliff Maynard from Halifax fished the River Suck on 26th June in good weather and used float and caster to catch 48 lbs of roach and hybrids. Cliff and his lady were on a short visit but will be back for a longer stay in August.
David Feeley and his daughter Kathleen fished on the River Suck and on the River Shannon for two weeks. They found a lot of pike in the water and the biggest weighed 12 lbs. They caught bream up to 5 lbs weight and had bags weighing 55 lbs. and 63 lbs. Their favoured bait was three red maggots and they found fishing was better when there was a ripple on the water.
Mick Wright from Leicester is back in town. On his first outing on the River Suck on Sunday he used pole float and caster to catch 22lbs of mainly roach.
Pat and George Pearson from Surrey were fishing Shannonbridge last week. They fished three days on the River Suck. Two days were OK with mixed bags of roach and hybrid weighing 15–20 lbs. The third day was very sunny and they struggled to catch 5 lbs. plus of hybrid and roach. For two days they fished the Hot Water stretch at Shannonbridge. They caught good Tench to 5 lbs. plus hybrids and roach. They found pike to be a problem. Fishing was a big improvement on last year.
Two of our local anglers decided to repeat a night fishing experience this week. On the previous occasion they had a super catch but for some reason this time the fish did not want to know. That’s fishing for you but well worth a try.

Bodo Funke, Angling Services Ireland, Boyle, Co Roscommon http://www.anglingservicesireland.com/ reports
We’re having some very good pike angling over the last week in the Upper Shannon Region with many visitors getting their fare share of pike. Pike are very hard fighting at the moment but need to be released quickly in order to avoid unnecessary stress.  Just got back from a morning session of pike fishing with my good friend Ari Schuster who is over from Berlin, Germany for a visit. Getting up at 4 o’clock certainly paid off when we boated and released 5 fish with the biggest being Ari’s new personal best of 18 lbs.

ENNELL ANGLERS…
Last Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association held their annual family day out. Fishing was from 11am-6pm, and at the 1pm weigh-in at Whitebridge Bay. Small pike were the order of the day with the best fish in around 5-6 lbs. As the day progressed some super Ennell pike came on the feed with local pike expert Jimmy Murphy landing the catch of the day a cracking fish 18 lbs 9 oz.  Junior anglers were also in the thick of the action with Cormac Murray and the Mahedy brother Lorcan & James landing pike.  The top young lady on the day was Katie Delaney. At the final shake up at 6pm it was Jimmy Murphy holding out to secure 1st place with his 18 lbs. 9 oz fish, 2nd was Pat Keenaghan with another good double 15 lbs 5 oz., 3rd Mick Flanagan 11 lbs 4 oz, and 4th Tom Gorman 10 lbs 3 oz. PIKE FEDERATION OF IRELAND….
Members of the Pike Federation of Ireland and ShRFB met last week in the Mullingar Park Hotel. Some of the main talking points from this meeting was the up coming introduction of new coarse fish bye-laws which will protect fish species such as bream, tench, roach, rudd, perch etc. At present there is talk of daily bag & size limits being introduced on these fish species. Ongoing problems regarding the removal of coarse fish from Irish waters was discussed in great detail, plus it was agreed by all that  there is a need to educate the ever growing number of foreign nationals coming to live here in Ireland – i.e. rules & regulations here in Ireland concerning angling. It was suggested placing posters in various languages with rules & regulations for each fishery etc. Another growing problem addressed at the meeting was the amount of litter left on lakes & river banks. This problem is really getting out of hand and will have to be looked into sooner rather than later. Once again the Power boat & jet-ski situation across the Shannon Region was highlighted.  On the competition scene last year the Pike Federation of Ireland hosted a monster Pike competition on Lough Sheelin. This proved a huge success with well over 200 anglers competing on the day. This year September 24th has being pencilled in. We will keep you posted on this, plus the new coarse fish regulations and any other points of interest that emerges from the above meeting. Those present at the meeting were David Hamill, John Chambers (Chairman Pike Feder
ation of Ireland), Ray Bergin all Pike Federation Officers, Matt Nolan Inspector with ShRFB, Eamon Cusack C.E.O. with the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, and Michael Callaghan (ShRFB) representative and Hon-Secretary I.T.F.F.A.

Hi, Fishing in Courtmacsherry has been brilliant the last few days with ton up skate again, several Specimen Coalfish and good conger fishing.  On Saturday the 1st July on a trip led by well known Cork angler Tom Johnson, 2 Skate were landed and 1 lost, as well as good conger, pollack and cod.  Darren was the first in with the skate but after fighting the fish for over 20 mins the line gave way and disappointment all round.  Paul Howard then got the next take and after 42mins we boated the fine skate approx weight 180 lbs. then tagged and released.  Not to be outdone, Darren with a cocktail of squid and mackerel hooked into another skate but this time landed a fine fish of 80 lbs which was previously tagged by Niall Mc Carthy skipper of the Lady Patricia last season, and again was returned.  The anglers had a great day and reckon it is the only location where you can catch skate, conger, ling, pollack, cod, and dogs on the same mark!  On Sunday the 2nd July we headed South and after a good steam were straight into the Coalies with Niall O Sullivan landing 2 Specimens, Mick Considine a fish of 21 lbs., Ger Power at last got his Specimen, Coalfish a fish of 20 lbs., Declan O Shea 2 Specimens 19 and 21 lbs, just missing the specimen weight by a fraction was English angler Will Lowther.  With all the Specimen Coalies we decided to anchor and after 10 mins were into the congers with over 50 boated the best around the 38 lbs mark, that’s all the news for now, Regards Mark.

Hi all, On  Sunday the 2nd July while fishing on the Lady Patricia out from Courtmacsherry a group led by Kah Leong had good fishing with conger, ling Pollack coalfish, the highlight of the day was the landing of a 130 lbs. Common Skate caught by the skipper Niall Mc Carthy which was tagged and released.  On the 5th July, while on a wrecking trip from the Lady Louise a group led by Johan Schouw had good fishing with 4 Specimen Coalfish and some good conger.  Johan had e-mailed at the start of the year saying that in his 15years fishing in Ireland that he had never caught a Specimen fish!  We said we would try to change all that and not alone did he get 1 but he landed 2 Specimen Coalfish weighing in at 20 and 24 lbs.   His friends Ton Moret and Kees Fryters also had Specimens of 15.5 lbs. and 16.35 lbs., Regards Mark

Skipper Nick Dent reports on recent fishing out from BALTIMORE

Very little fishing activity at Baltimore in June. The charter boats hardly left their moorings all month. On one of the few trips that did take place, however, a party of local anglers on Kieran Higgins’ private boat Firewater caught and released three common skate up to about 150 lbs. Two of them were taken on 25 lbs. line by Baltimore angler Pete Perry. Another skate was lost on the surface and a fifth came unstuck in mid water.  So there is something to look forward to when angling does finally get under way.
Best wishes, Nick

Luke Aston, Clare Dragoon sea angling charter operating out of Carrigaholt, Co Clare reports on some recent fishing out from CARRIGAHOLT in Co. Clare
Into July already, it’s hard to believe we are into the second half of 2006!  At this stage I am well into my busy season and am fishing most days. This might seem like heaven to some readers of this report but it also takes some hard work, not that I am complaining mind!!
And what of the fishing? Well I think it is going well. The star catch of this report has to be a specimen John Dory of just over 4 lb 2 ozs caught on the Clare Dragoon by Michael Beville on the 24th of June.
As for the general fishing, mackerel are in plentiful supply at this stage. There is also a good supply of whitefish, but while it is possible to get a good range of small fish, you do have to move around to get a larger sized fish. We have been tracking down Pollock of up to 10 lb and some reasonable sized Ling, Cod, Haddock and Whiting although it must be said (and sad to say) more than 2 or 3 cod over 5 lbs in a day is exceptional. Most fishing trips with reasonable weather would yield over 400 lbs of fish.
The tope fishing is going well with fish landed on most days that we target them. The best this year so far was 38 lb and the surprising thing is that every fish we have had was a male.
