From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/
3/7/06 there is only one Angler who hit the headlines today and that is Mr David O‘Hagan who caught a fine 12 ¼ lbs. Salmon on the troll and he also caught a fine 5 lbs. Sea Trout, and they say you can’t have good fishing when the Lake is low all I can say is, we all should take a leaf out of David’s Book of fishing, because he does it on a regular bases. Wind northeast all day. Air temperature 21C/70F Water temperature behind the Holly Island 19.4C/66F overcast with the sun breaking through at times.
4/7/06 very little action in the fly department due to the lack of wind and not much doing in the trolling department ether and with the Lake being very low my noble Sea Trout and Salmon are keeping a low profile. Wind Northeast light to calm all-day, and very cloudy and humid.
5/7/06 the same as yesterday except for the wind which was northwest light to calm.
6/7/06 wind southwest light to fresh there was rain this morning but not enough to wet the floor boards even though it was heavy at times. There was a little action to be seen in the Salmon department. Mr Rudolph caught two Grilse on the Fly in the Mouth of the Commeragh with his Gillie Mr Dominic Mc Gillicudy and Mr Paddy Spain caught a Grilse on the troll with his Gillie Mr Brod O’Sullivan of Stella Maris Guest House Waterville. On the Sea Trout front, Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com was telling me that one of his clients Mr Helmut Lessner caught 6 juniors and I also see on www.loughcurrane.com Mr Stephen Galvin caught five Sea Trout up to 2.5 lbs and all fresh in from the sea.
7/7/06 All quiet on the western front be it fly or troll, even though there were a few Sea Trout caught but nothing substantial. Wind northwest light to fresh and overcast with the sun breaking through and with the odd shower.
8/7/06 There were a few Sea Trout caught but no record breakers and in the Salmon department no comment. Wind southwest fresh to strong and come midday it got quite wild with violent gusts, It made a small flood, so there should be some good action in the Mouth of the Commeragh because tomorrow is 9th of July the day which records are broken nearly thirty years ago and the most famous of them all was a Jesuit Priest, the very rev Father Eric Cantillon who caught 16 Salmon and one Sea Trout in the Mouth of the Commeragh on a size 7 fly tied by the good Father himself, Father Eric Cantillon was with his Gillie Mr Jack O’Sullivan of Stella Maris Waterville.
9/7/06 There were a few Sea trout caught in the Mouth of the Commeragh and on the drift but no World Cup winners but it was a different story in the Trolling department Where Mr Jerry O’Sullivan and his six and a half year old daughter Miss Aoife O’Sullivan caught a great Salmon of 11.5 lbs on the troll in Capall in their brand new Boat and I asked Mr Jerry O’Sullivan are you going to smoke it, he replied no I will rap it up in tin foil and cook it in the Dishwasher and that is a fact believe it or believe it not and I say no Spin no Fly’s, well that knocks that theory out the window or does it, I will let you decide. On the River Inny there was a fine 12 lbs. Salmon caught on a flying C by Mr James Booth of Waterville. That is all the news from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just Facts.

Well here we are turning over another page in the 2006 calendar. The year is moving along very fast as we report on the angling scene here around the Midlands. It’s hard to believe we are into the 2nd week in July. Soon trout anglers will be getting very active on the waterways late into the night; the annual Peter & Murroughs hatches should soon start appearing on local lakes.
LOWER SHANNON AREA
A good run of grilse arrived on the lower Shannon leading up to and over the weekend with a few fish reported caught on Castleconnell salmon fishery. Our Fisheries Awareness Week adult quiz winner Frank Dempsey from Ballykeeran Athlone fished beat 5 and 6 yesterday Tuesday July 11th with his son Sean. They both had a grilse each on fly in the early morning on Beat 6, fish were 7 lbs 9 ozs and 3 lbs 14 ozs.  They were delighted with the fishing and will be returning to fish at Castleconnell again.
Richard Keays, Millbank House, Murroe, Co Limerick, Ireland http://www.millbankhouse.com  Email to info@millbankhouse.com Tel 061 386115 reports for the River Mulcair system.
TROUT FISHING
The main River Mulcair fished fairly well but was best for the evening rise. The Newport and Bilboa River fished all week with many visitors catching up to 25 Trout and over per day. On the Newport River there were many trout around ½ lbs. caught. But Mr Dupont from France had 2 trout 2 lbs. in the late evening on the Sedge Mr Bertossa from Switzerland was very happy to catch a trout 2½ lbs. near Abington on a spinner. All trout were released which is the policy at Millbank House & Angling Centre.
SALMON FISHING
At Plassey and the Cut on the Lower Shannon, there was an excellent run of grilse with 50 – 60 grilse reported caught mainly by local anglers. The Mulcair also benefited from the rain over the weekend with a nice run of salmon arriving. Many anglers were rewarded with fish. Visiting anglers to Milbank Angling reported the following catches
Peter Armstrong from England 2 salmon 9 lbs. and 11 lbs. and lost 2 more.
Johnny Ross from Wales had 1 salmon of 10 lbs. and a grilse 6½ lbs.
Werner Schaeffer from Germany had 1 salmon 9½ lbs on the fly.
Jean Longislie from France had two grilse 4 lbs and 6 lbs
ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

ShRFB reports for Castleroberts Fishery RIVER MAIGUE
Between noon and 2 pm. I normally release my fish but had orders to bag a “brace” for the table so I finished with this nice bag which range from 2 lbs down to 10 oz. These were taken on a private stretch opposite the Fishery Board waters and all were taken on a self-tied nymph, the tying of which cannot be divulged in the interest  of future trout stocks! Water levels are very low at present with suspended alga and weed making fly-fishing difficult, but this under fished water holds exciting prospects for the thinking fly-fisher. With regard to tactics, I am rapidly forming a view that we just are not aware how much the trout feeds underwater or “in bed” and tend to write off the fishing if there’s no surface activity…a costly assumption!”

WRFB Angling Report 11 July 2006

GALWAY WEIR
Salmon fishing in Galway was superb this past week, with 180 salmon landed, including 142 to the fly. Many anglers caught their 3 salmon limit and released more fish, including French visitor Gerard Garnier, Northern Ireland angler Robert Logue, and Cork visitors Eddie Power and Tom Twomey.  Louis van Beck from Mullingar landed 3 nice grilse, as did Italian visitor A. Falorni, whose friend Mr. Federighi also had a nice grilse. Kevin Finnegan had 5 fish, releasing 2, while friends Conor Dennedy and Ian Jenkins had a fish each. John Carrig landed 3 on fly, as did Tony Kenny, and Swiss visitors Stefan Zemp and Pascal Bader had 3 grilse between them. Young Joseph O’Toole from Renmore, Galway, outfished many of his elders on Monday morning, landing 3 fine grilse on the fly. Joseph was ably ghillied by Grandfather Sean, who was understandably delighted with the fine catch. Peter Quinn from Loughrea landed his first salmon, a nice 5.5 lbs. grilse, and Frank Wallace had a good fish on shrimp.
Visitors to Galway are marvelling at the number of salmon to be seen in the river at the cathedral bridge, and with water conditions absolutely perfect, fishing prospects are good for another excellent week at the Weir.

LOUGH MASK
There were small hatches of sedge and buzzer over the week, but very few anglers were out and consequently returns are low. 13 anglers reported 21 trout in 31 rod-days, with all methods producing fish. Fly anglers reported the Green Peter, daddy-long-legs and dabblers were catching fish. Ron Cardwell and 2 friends from Dublin had 8 trout for 10.5 lbs in 3 days dapping and wet fly fishing. Sam Cripps and John Luttrell from Co. Down had 5 trout for 7 lbs. in 3 days to wet and dry fly, and Ballinrobe man David Hall had 2 trout for 3 lbs in day to wetfly. The fish of the week, however, was caught by 6-year-old Oisin Finn-Devlin from Trim, Co. Meath, who landed a magnificent trout of over 10 lbs while trolling.

LOUGH CARRA
Fishing was slow on Carra this week, with small hatches of sedge and damselfly seen and not many anglers out. 34 anglers reported 10 trout in 21 rod-days, with wet and dry fly both taking fish. The Carra Anglers held an evening competition on the 6th from 6 to 10pm, and with 27 anglers taking 7 trout for 9.5 lbs. John Burke from Ballina had 2 trout for 3.25 lbs to take first place, with Castlebar’s Gerry Deane taking 2nd, with 1 trout for 1.78 lbs. Gerry also won the heaviest fish prize, and Bart Crowley from Ballinrobe came 3rd with 1 trout for 1.5 lbs.

LOUGH INAGH
Fishery manager Colin Folan reports from Lough Inagh: At last a flood!  I am delighted to report a good run of grilse and sea trout into the fishery, after Saturday’s deluge of rain.  The coming fortnight should be very productive (weather permitting).  There is no shortage of water here now and anglers are reporting seeing travelling fish in all the river beats. Seamus Murphy (Limerick) caught his first salmon ever when he fished Lough Inagh, the fish took a size 10 Octopus Fly and weighed 4.5 lbs. Ronan Creane (Galway) caught and released a fresh 5 lbs grilse on Lough Inagh.  The fish took a size 12 Sooty and Ronan outfished his father (the great Joe Creane). Dr. John Casey (Galway) caught and released an 8 lbs salmon on a Collie Dog whilst fishing the Derryclare Butts.
Donnie Walkings
haw (N.Ire) had great sport on Lough Inagh recording 9 browns and 6 sea trout on such patterns as the Baffler and Gosling, the fish ranged from 0.75 – 1.5 lbs.
Paul Cahill (Dublin) had 5 browns for his day on Inagh on a Donegal Blue and Magenta Bumble. Colin Folan (Galway) had 4 sea trout and 2 browns on a size 12 Magenta Bumble for a morning on Inagh, sea trout ranged from 1.25 – 2.5 lbs, and David Kirk (Dublin) caught his first sea trout while fishing Greenpoint Beat, the fish took a Ballcock and weighed over a pound.

BUNOWEN AND CARROWNISKEY RIVERS
The heavy rains on Saturday brought a good flood in the Bunowen and Carrowniskey, and fresh fish were seen running both rivers. So far one fish has been reported caught, a nice 6 lbs grilse by John Lawson, but fishery staff believe more fish were caught by local anglers. These lovely spate rivers get good runs of grilse from now until the end of the season, and fish well after any rain. Vincent Roche reports:      w/e 9 July, 2006

River Moy

The Moy had its best week of the season, so far, with a recorded catch of 743 salmon bringing the total for the season, so far, to 3,795. The catch was dominated by small grilse with many weighing just 2 lbs. – 3 lbs. With water levels remaining low, the Moy Fishery, at Ballina, continued to provide reasonable fishing with a catch of 266 for the week.  With the dry weather expected to continue, and some improvement in the grilse run apparent, this fishery should fish well over the coming weeks. The best of the fishing this week was on the Ridge Pool. Sydney Purce, N. Ireland, and Geoffrey Beckett, England, each had their bag limit of 3 fish. David Paton, England, had a salmon of 7 lbs. on fly and Ian Jenkins, Wales, had one of 6 lbs. The Weir Pool also continued to fish well this week. Gary Perks, England, caught 5 of which he released 3 and Michael Helszajn, England, also had 5 and released 3.  On the Cathedral Beat, Peter and Anne Taylor, England, had 5 for their day. Up river, all fisheries continued to produce some fish. On Gannons’, a visitor form Thailand, Joe Kuban, caught a grilse of 4.5 lbs. and Trevor Stuart, N. Ireland, had a fine fish of 10.5 lbs.  On Cloongee Fishery, Martin Parker had 4 salmon on fly over 2 days, Alan Jones had 2 on the fly over 2 days and Michael Dench had 3 on worm over his 2 days.

Moy Estuary

On the Moy Estuary, sea trout fishing picked up somewhat with a reported catch of 84 for the week.

Lough Conn

Trout fishing was quiet on again Conn this week with most of the activity centred on trolling for salmon. Four salmon and eight grilse were reported as well as a small number of trout. Graham Williams, Pontoon, had 2 trout weighing 2.5 lbs. with the best at 1.75 lbs. and both taken on a Green Peter. Alastair McRory, UK, had 2 trout with 1 at 1 lb. and 1 at 2 lbs. on a Stimulater.  Joe Quinn, Ballina, and Orla Walshe, Cloghans, had 2 trout over 1 lb. each on an Octupus. John Walshe, Cloghans, had 1 for 1 lb. on a spent may fly.

Ballisodare River

Ballisodare had a very good week with 221 salmon for the week. The bulk of the catch was taken at the butt of the falls but a rise in water levels at the weekend allowed some fish upstream resulting in good fishing at the back of Ballisodare village. Most fish caught were small grilse but a few bigger ones were also taken.  For example, Damien Ruddy had a salmon of 9 lbs. on worm and Vincent Henry had one of 10.5 lbs. on fly.

Burrishoole Fishery

Eleven fish were recorded on Burrishoole this week comprising 6 wild fish and 5 which were ranched. Chris Ryan and Gerald Roche, UK, had 4 between them. Jim Ferguson, also from the UK, had 2 and Paul Wymes, Dublin, had another 2. Most were small grilse but one of 6.5 lbs. was also caught.

Ballin Lough

Angling was again fairly quiet on Ballin Lough this week.  However, 28 anglers caught 39 rainbow trout of which 19 were released. Robbie Williamson caught 6 of which he released 4.  He also lost a very large rainbow after a tremendous fight. He estimated the trout at about 12 lbs!  Mr. P. Budding caught 3 rainbow trout and a fine brown trout of 3.5 lbs. To book a boat on Ballin Lough, contact Mrs. Gill, beside the lake, on 098-26128

Lynsey Clarke reports:

RIVER DROWES – Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th July 2006.

Water levels were low on the Drowes during the week and the rain on Saturday evening only raised levels slightly. There were a number of grilse in the 2 to 4 lbs. range caught, mainly on the fly in the morning and evening. The sea pools, Eel Weir Pool, Mill Pool and the first 2 pools below Four Masters Bridge having been producing most fish.

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th July 2006.

Trout angling has been somewhat dour on Lough Melvin again this week. Anglers were temping fair numbers of trout on the wet flies on occasions but the fish were difficult to hook. Most anglers complained of fish coming short. Few salmon have been recorded due in great part to the fact that there has been little angling effort for salmon this week. Rossinver Bay still contains good numbers of salmon with fresh grilse showing over the bay.

EANYWATER FISHERY – Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th July 2006.

The Eany ran very low for the week not rising above 0.1 metres from Monday to Saturday. On Saturday night we received a good flood however which saw the gauge reading 1.2 metres early Sunday morning.  The gauge average for the week read 0.3 metres. There were 8 anglers fishing for the week all on Sunday during the good water. There were 6 salmon caught and I am awaiting confirmation of names and sizes of some of these fish. Regular visitor Dimitrios Kandiotos recorded 2 grilse caught from Bonnyglen Falls. The fish weighed 2 and 5lb and were caught on the worm.

ESKE FISHERY – Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th July 2006.

Water levels on the Eske Fishery were low from Monday to Saturday but good rain on Saturday afternoon and evening ensured the Lough and River was up by over 1 foot by Sunday. This gave good water levels in the river for Sunday. Only 3 visiting anglers fished for the week fishing on the Lough, 2 of these on Wednesday and 1 on Sunday for a few hours. I have no record of salmon caught this week. The flood on Sunday did however bring the first run of sea trout into the Lough. I caught 4 sea trout to 1 lb in a couple of hours fishing on the fly. The fish were ‘as fresh as a daisy’ and already well spread over the Lough.

OWENEA RIVER – Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th July 2006.

The Owenea ran fairly low all week until the Sunday when we had a good flood reading 0.5 metres on the gauge. This gave a gauge average for the week of 0.20 metres. 22 visiting anglers were fishing for the week with 7 of these fishing on Sunday. Jim Laffin recorded salmon of 9 lbs. and 1 lb (returned) caught on the fly from beat 6 on Sunday. I am still awaiting details of other catches. I have details of a couple of salmon caught previously. Jim McLean caught a 10 lbs. salmon from Gavigan’s Pool on beat 8 on the 25th June
and John Lennon recorded a 9 lbs. salmon caught on the fly on the 23rd.

Cashel Trout Fishery
Report by Marlene Mc Laughlin.
First of all, I would like to announce that, we, Cashel Lake View (Trout Fishery and Bed and Breakfast) are now official distributors of Foyle and Carlingford Area Licences.
With the dry bright conditions some anglers are finding things a little bit difficult, however, this is not the case for young Brian Canavan from Bellaghy Using    Buzzers and Dries, Brian managed to bank a total of fourteen trout some of them weighing into double figures. Stephen Wilson (Ballinderry) bagged two weighing almost 4 lbs. which took a Parachute fly while Aidy Askin (Culmore) managed to bank two trout which took Suspender Buzzers. Friends Rory Morrin and Darren Crawford released a total of three trout but unfortunately lost a big one which weighed approximately six or seven pounds
Shane Lockhead (Limavady) banked two real good ones, which took Buzzers while Richard Pentland (Londonderry) only landed the one, which took a CDC, before the midges sent him home. Friends, Bertie, Liz, Jennifer and Colin from Bangor paid a visit to Cashel but unfortunately they were unlucky and didn’t land any trout but saw many being caught.
Breakfast is now being served at Cashel in the comfort of an open log fire with plenty of craic. Group bookings most welcome during the week.  Tight lines for next weekend and fingers crossed for a tagged trout.

UPPER SHANNON
ShRFB Reports for the Upper Shannon Region
There’s very little pleasure angling going on at Lanesboro. Local anglers are reporting plenty of fish but little angling activity. There was a local match at Herons shore on Lough Allen which was won with a mixed bag of 23 lbs. Barneys shore is fishing well as is the Marina at Carrick on Shannon. There’s plenty of fishing to be had for anglers willing to put in some effort.
Kevin Lyons, MELVIEW LODGE GUESTHOUSE, Drumlish Road, Clonrollagh, Co Longford Tel : 003534345061 Email:  info@melviewlodge.com Web: http://www.melviewlodge.com  covering fisheries in the LONGFORD AREA and the STROKESTOWN LAKES
The fishing on some lakes has again been slow due to lack of anglers and adequate pre-baiting. However some anglers have used this to their advantage and in some cases have found that they were the only ones fishing the lakes. Pre-baiting once or twice before fishing venues has seen great results, again Strokestown and North Longford lakes have been producing steady weights and in some cases some specimen fish. No report for Roosky due lack of anglers on the ground.
Angling guests of Melview Lodge, Martyn, Alan, Neal and Dave from Blackpool fished four different lakes and each had reasonably good nets with the best fishing on the last two days with some quality fish encountered, Bream to 5 lbs. 12 oz, Tench to 5 lbs, Pike to 11 lbs. and lots of good Roach, Hybrids and skimmers. The last day belonged to Alan who caught Bream and Tench casting the feeder twenty yards using red maggot.

” We fished Lough Allen three times last week and had catches up to 80 lbs. of Hybrids, Roach and some skimmers from Barneys shore on the feeder but only when it was windy did it fish well. Also tried the Channel above Ballintra Sluices at Lough Allen where it is deeper and had 40 lbs. of good hybrids and Roach, also on the feeder. We fished Cloonahee on the Hillstreet Lakes and caught 14 Tench around 5 lbs. to 6 lbs. on the pole and caster near the lillies. “

Shannonbridge Fishing Report … Dated 10th July 2006.
“Generally weather was fine and without rain until Saturday. The river level at Shannonbridge was 2.24 metres on Tuesday, 2.17 metres on Friday and 2.30 metres on Sunday.
Tony Murphy from Ballinasloe fished two short sessions on the River Shannon at Shannonbridge and used ledger and red maggot to catch a mixed catch of roach, hybrids, bream and perch.
Mick Wright from Leicester fished on the River Suck on Sunday 3rd July and used pole float and caster to catch 20 lbs. of roach and hybrid. Next day he fished the Boathouse stretch on the Suck and used the same tactics to catch 25 lbs. of mostly roach and hybrids. Weather was very hot on both days. On Tuesday he also fished on the Suck and caught 10 lbs. of roach and hybrid with pole float and caster. On Wednesday Mick fished at Devenish Island and had a poor day at an unfed peg and perhaps his float and caster tactics were wrong.  On Thursday he fished the River Brosna and caught fifteen mixed fish using pole float and caster. Lou Brummitt from Boston fished alongside Mick Wright on those five days. On Sunday Lou used a pole hemp and tares and caught roach and hybrids. On Monday he caught 20 lbs. of roach and hybrids at the Boathouse stretch. Back on their favoured swims on the River Suck on Tuesday Lou used pole hemp and tares to catch 25 lbs. of roach, hybrids and perch. On Wednesday at Devenish Island in overcast conditions he used the same methods and caught 25 small fish.  On Thursday, on the River Brosna, Lou had 25 small fish for a poor days fishing.  The Shannonbridge Power Plant is in production but I have heard no reports of catches from there.”

There are more anglers fishing the island swims on Derg’s southern shores around Killaloe this week. Some parties are bagging up to 80 lbs. of hybrids, roach and the odd bream but generally fishing has been somewhat inconsistent and is a bit patchy at times.  Best fishing is after 2 pm.   Today Wednesday is overcast so daytime fishing should be better. Warm bright dry weather forecast from tomorrow will probably kill off midday fishing and anglers should try an overnight, dawn or dusk session for best results.

YOUTH COMPETITION
After the success of the Hannon Sand and Gravel Children’s Competition it was the turn of Athlone teenagers to show what they could do and accordingly last Sunday twelve boats carrying twenty two competitors took to the water for the Athlone Anglers Association Youth Cup. This is the third year that this competition has been run and each year the weather has been rainy and windy but that is obviously the best weather for Pike fishing as eighteen were brought to the scales for weighing. When the competition finished in Burgess Park it was John Monaghan who topped the leader board with a Pike weighing 12 lb 1.5 ozs and in second place only a half ounce behind was Stacey Smith with her Pike weighing 12 lb 1 oz. Fintan Lynch claimed third place with his Pike weighing 11 lb 14 ozs with Fionn Gandy in fourth place with a 11 lb 9 oz Pike. Liz Cooney received fifth prize for a Pike weighing 11 lbs 1 oz and Gary Ledwith received sixth for an 8 lbs. Pike with Ian Dempsey in seventh place with his Pike weighing 7 lbs. 10 ozs. Eight place went to Sean Ganly for a Pike weighing 6 lbs. 7.5 ozs and Bernadette Hughes received ninth prize for a Pike weighing 6 lbs. 4 ozs while Sean Quigley received tenth prize for his Pike weighing 5 lbs. 13 ozs. Neil Cassidy was eleventh with his Pike weighing 5 lbs. and Patrick Quigley claimed twelfth place with his Pike weighing 4 lbs 8.5 ozs.
The competition is very generously sponsored by the four tackle shops in Athlone and we would like to sincerely thank Quinn’s Tackle Shop, Lough Ree Active, Scully’s Tackle Shop and the Strand Tackle Shop for supplying all the prizes and ensuring that each competitor went home with something to remember the day. Thanks also to the Social Committee for organising the event and to Gerard Lynch and Keith Dowling who were the Captains of the Day.
LADIES DAY COMPETITION
The very popular Ladies day competition is upon us and will take place next Sunday 16th July. This is the one day in the year when the ladies get to show the men exactly how it’s done and given that for the last two years the winning fish, caught by Mary McCarthy, weighed in well over the 20 lbs. mark we can expect some excellent catches this year. Des Powell of the Strand Tackle Shop is generously sponsoring the competition and we would like to thank him in advance for his continued support that makes this competition possible.
As usual the competition will be a Pike catch and release down river and will start at the White Bridge at 10 am, the Captains locations and contact numbers will be notified to anglers on the morning of the competition as will the location of the very important picnic area which is being catered. The social committee have informed me that there will be plenty of prizes and not just for the winners there will also be plenty of booby prizes to be decided on the day (such as best pair of wellies, loveliest hat smallest fish caught etc) and all the prizes will be presented that evening in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel where entertainment will also be provided to help everybody relax after a long days fishing.
FOR YOUR DIARY
The following is the schedule of competitions that it is proposed to hold over the next few weeks Please note this list may change due to unforeseen circumstances, however the details of each competition will be published on the www.athlone.ie  website in the week prior to each competition.

Charter skipper Nick Dent reports on recent deep sea fishing with clients fishing out from BALLTIMORE.

“Common skate have been plentiful off Baltimore as elsewhere and last week a party of UK anglers on Rooster boated 17 in one day. The anglers were from Whitehaven and we were fishing the mark known as ‘Skate Alley’. The skate, which were weighed on board before release, included eight over 100 lbs. Heaviest was Tom Beck’s 170 lbs. fish (a male) followed by Dave Farrer’s 160-pounder.  Two anglers, John Glaister and Mick Killen, caught three skate each. Bait for all the catch was mackerel. The skate were in perfect condition and none showed signs of having been caught before. They were tagged as usual and two were actually recaptured during the day. The rest of the catch was mainly conger up to about 30 lbs.”

Best wishes, Nick

Loughs Agency Angling Report
10th July 2006

Carlingford catchment
Glenn Rooney of Oriel Angling reports this week that as the weather has picked up so has the angling in the area, large numbers of Mackerel are now present throughout the Lough and judging by the numbers fishing from the shore at Greenore everyone is catching!
With the arrival of the Mackerel better numbers of Bass are being caught and its good to see the conservation minded anglers returning catches, seven Bass to 5 lbs. were reported to Oriel Angling this week. There were few anglers fishing but high tides and the arrival of the Mackerel should produce better catches. The large number of Mullet in the Lough has stirred the imagination of a lot of anglers and one particular angler took several lovely fish from Warrenpoint on bread flake, these fish fight like demons and are well worth a try.
Finally Oriel angling had a party on the Lough during the week and some nice Codling to 3 lbs. and bags of Mackerel were caught. Shea Daly came out top rod and will be investing in fishing tackle soon.
