New Record Fish and lots of big fish taken by anglers in 2007
Irish Specimen Fish Committee (ISFC) report 2007 issued on Christmas Eve 2007

New Records and lots of big specimen fish were recorded in 2007 – that’s the message from the ISFC report just issued today. The annual report for 2007 – possibly the only report for the year issued within the year – details the four new Irish record fish taken in 2007 and all of the information about large fish taken in Ireland by anglers this year. A total of 530 specimen fish were recorded for 2007 including four new Irish records.
The new Irish Records are:

GARFISH – Stephen O’Neill from Cork with his new record of 1.729 kg taken in Cork Harbour on 28th May 2007

GILTHEAD BREAM – Robert McClean from Dublin with his new record of 3.24 kg from Cork Harbour on 10th September 2007

RED MULLET – Joe Cooney from Achill with his new record of 0.71 kg taken at Achill Island on 30th August 2007

ALBACORE – Henry McAuley from Kerry with his new record of 29.96 kg taken on 5th Sept. 2007 fishing out of Caherciveen

Other news on the specimen fish front:
•    The ISFC used genetic fingerprinting to identify species like roach, rudd and their hybrids in 2007. Fish scales were used to identify these fish which are difficult to distinguish from each other – the study is being conducted in conjunction with the Zoology Department in UCD
•    New species added to specimen list – Blackmouthed dogfish, a small deep sea shark,  has been added to the specimen fish listings so anglers have another species to target
•    ISFC is looking at the idea of “Conservation Specimens” – two species, tope and blue shark, will be reviewed in 2008 to see what the potential is for using length measurements to claim a “conservation specimen”.
•    Flounder specimen weight has been reduced to 1.1 kg.

The report will be available on the ISFC website shortly www.irish-trophy-fish.com
Hard copies will be available from Central Fisheries Board offices in Swords, Dublin in early 2008
