This October, Discovery Real Time kick starts its angling season with a stunning new series hosted by fishing legend John Wilson. John Wilson’s Dream Fishing tackles some of the most demanding species, ranging from giant common skate and powerful conger eels, to blue sharks and even the legendary Mekong catfish. The series also features a variety of beautiful and wild fishing locations across the British Isles and abroad, including the spectacular scenery of the Scottish highlands and the breath-taking, deep water fjords of northern Norway.
John’s journey casts off by wondering the upper reaches of Hampshire’s delightful and sparklingly clear River Test for her ladyship the grayling, accounting for several beautiful specimens over 2lbs. From Hampshire to Scotland, as John is joined by his daughter Lisa when they visit the saltwater lochs of the northern highlands to bring giant common skate to the surface, with Lisa reeling in a winner weighing 190lbs – heavier than herself! John also proves that saltwater fishing can still be enjoyed, when gale force conditions prevent a trip out to sea, and he travels 20 miles inland to the beautiful Loch Etive for a selection of smaller species including, spur dogfish and thornback rays.
Journeying further south to the upper reaches of the River Thames, John visits Lechlade Trout Fisheries famed for its monster brown and rainbow trout. Then it’s onto the River Waveney, bordering Norfolk and Suffolk, where John stops at the beautiful, 36 acre Homersfield Lake for some breathtaking stalking action with large carp. Heading further a field, several miles off Jersey, John battles with a number of powerful conger eels weighing up to 50lbs and fishes for bass, bull-huss and tope.
John leaves the British Isles behind as he crosses the Atlantic to Montauk Point, Long Island in New York State, for the fourth Brits Vs Yanks sharking tournament. The three day event sees the competitors reel in plenty of blue sharks weighing over 200lbs. John also hooks up with ‘Monster Man’ Frank Mundus whose adventures with huge sharks during the 1950’s and 60’s were replicated by the character ‘Quint’ in the film Jaws. John soon departs the US for northern Norway, ‘land of the midnight sun’, where from May to July it never gets dark. He fishes the incredible deep water fiords and catches coalfish, haddock and cod, as well as teaming up with an old friend to enjoy an all-night fishing expedition.
John’s angling extravaganza also sees him head as far as Thailand, where he fishes with his brother David in Palm Tree Lagoon, near Hua Hin, for the legendary Mekong catfish, giant arapaima, alligator garfish and pacu. Other locations and species featured in the new series include; offshore from West Wales for shark and the River Wye for barble and chub.
