The weather last week wasn’t the best for angling at Llyn Brenig, with temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius experienced throughout most of the reporting period, bright sun and strong northerly winds produced the expected results. Fish have been preoccupied with feeding on big columns of Daphnia sub surface whilst good numbers of brown beetle and green weevil have been blown onto the surface.

Best areas over the past seven days have been the Dam Wall, around the cages and “Hafod Lom” for those fishing from the boat. Bank anglers during this period have struggled due to the majority of fish moving out beyond their casting abilities.

Rod averages have still been fairly good however, with a 2.5 average for bank anglers and a 4.35 for those fishing from the boat.

Llyn Brenig hosted the 2006 Ladies International on Thursday 15th, this meant that many anglers taking part in this competition had to familiarise themselves with the water during the preceding days. Fish therefore, as this is water that allows catch and release became wise to a number of lures that would have been used during these “practice” sessions.

England with 53 fish for 105lbs 8.25ozs took advantage of this and achieved gold medal by using the “Washing Line” method.

Wales with 51 fish for 91lbs 11.25ozs took silver whilst Scotland with 42 fish for 79lbs 1oz achieved bronze.

Mr R Egan recorded the best fish of the week with a “Blue” of 7lbs.

Ranger staff intend to stock in excess of the projected weekly stocking of 1200 fish during the coming week, to further boost the present head of fish held.

The Foxton Trout League takes place again this coming Sunday and although boats are available throughout the week, booking is advisable. Please call 01490 420463 if you wish to book a boat.
