Late May and June saw some excellent sport on offer to anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir, with many limit bags being taken on both worm and fly. Those fishing ledgered worm produced consistently well when fishing the bank from areas such as Badgers, The Field and The Big Meadow, whilst fly bank areas such as Top End, Rainbow Bay and Felindre Point also produced good results. Those choosing to fish fly from the boat saw good top of the water sport throughout most areas of the Reservoir, but especially whilst fishing the top of the long arm from Felindre to the conservation area and The Point. Anglers fishing this method also saw a number of big fish taken around Felindre Point.
Good buzzer hatches can till be seen coming off the water during the calmer conditions with a number of Hawthorn Flies still noticeable. This abundance of food has kept fish feeding close to the surface, enabling good catches for those fishing the more traditional patterns from both bank and boat.
Patterns have been varied, depending on weather conditions but intermediate lines with Damsels, Cats Whisker, Blobbs and black flies have predominated. Those wishing to fish a more traditionalist approach with floating lines, have done well with patterns which have included Buzzers, Hoppers and CDC’s.
Notable bags for those fishing fly from the bank over the past four weeks include Jones of Carmarthen, with six fish for 12lbs 4ozs. E Jones of Cardiff with six fish for 12lbs 9ozs, this included a best fish of 3lbs 2ozs. Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest with six fish weighing in at 14lbs 8ozs. Brian’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs 8ozs. And C Bray of Southampton with six fish for 15lbs 15ozs.
During the same period bags taken by those opting to fish ledgered worm from the bank have been slightly heavier, with T Price recording a six fish limit of 14lbs 8ozs. Brian Thomas of Clunderwen with six fish for 15lbs. T Raymond of Narbeth recently had a limit bag of 16lbs 9ozs. However A Evans of Pembroke landed the heaviest bag of the month on worm with six fish for 18lbs, all six fish weighed in at around the 3lbs mark.
A number of double figure fish have been taken during this reporting period by fly anglers fishing from the boat. Mr Williams of Northampton took a Rainbow of 10lbs 9ozs a seasonal best at that time. Mark Noon of Bridgend however with a best bag of the week of 16lbs 8ozs for three fish, beat this with a fish of ¼ oz short of 11lbs.
Other notable bags for those fishing fly from the boat, include Martin Jones of Ystradgynlais with six fish for 13lbs 8ozs. Martin also recorded the best bag of the week on his next visit, with six fish for 14lbs. And Dai Key of Cardigan with 6 fish for 15lbs 8ozs.
