The past few weeks have produced some of the best fishing so far experienced during the 2007 season by anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. Not only has the average bag weight increased during this period, but also the number of bigger fish being taken on both permitted methods has risen sharply. Most good six fish limits are now seeing at least one fish of around the 6lbs mark included in the total weight. The main reason being attributed for this is the way in which fish, especially those stocked earlier in the season, are now feeding, Fry in large numbers are now being seen close in to the bank in all areas of the Reservoir and anglers can now see good numbers of Trout feeding on this source of food.

Bank anglers fishing either Ledgered Worm or Fly are now able to take advantage of these feeding habits provided they have knowledge of the water or are willing to seek the advice of staff on site. This was made clearly apparent on Saturday when Ranger staff, whilst carrying out their bank duties advised one of the local anglers fishing Ledgered Worm from the “Field” to cast his bait within 15 metres of the bank. Gareth had been casting up to 50 metres out without that much success. The advice given produced a cracking 6lbs Rainbow Trout within 5 minutes. Needless to say Gareth was pleasantly pleased, especially considering the angler fishing alongside to his left (an angler who should we say was a quarter of his age) had already landed a fish of around the 6lbs mark.

This feeding habit has also made a big difference in the weights being recorded by those fishing either bank or boat. Phillip Evans of Carmarthen recorded the best six fish limit of last week by any angler fishing Fly from the boat his bag totalled 15lbs in all but was only achievable by fishing a Hi D line during his visit. This should be compared to a number of Fly Bank limits of around the same weight produced on intermediate lines without the necessity of a Booby.

Nigel Bevan, one of our season permit holders produced the best bag by an angler fishing Fly from the bank during the past week, his six fish which included a best of 5lbs 10.5 ounces totalled 16lbs. Honours must however go to Gordon John whose six fish, taken during the Llys-y-Fran Angling Club competition on Sunday totalled 21lbs 7ounces. Best fish of the week was a Rainbow Trout of 7lbs 12ozs taken by Barry Burgess of Wrexham whilst fishing Fly from the bank.

This week’s free permit was won by Kathleen Warren of Hakin, Milford Haven (tough luck Peter your wife has beaten you once again).
