July 2010

Despite the variable weather experienced over the past four weeks, there has been a continuation of the good sport offered to anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. The fine weather which stayed with us throughout June changed quite markedly, with some heavy and prolonged showers staying with us for most of July. Most anglers visiting the Reservoir were still able to maximize on their bags because of the number of fish feeding within the margins.

An increase in the number of fish being stocked on a weekly basis, means that there is now a good head of fish within the water, and this linked to the amount of natural food available within all areas  has meant a marked increase in average catches now being recorded. Especially for those anglers opting to fish fly from either bank or boat.

Notable bags taken whilst fishing fly from the boat include: P Elias of Carmarthen with six fish for 11lbs 9ozs, with a best fish of 3lbs 2ozs. Brian Dalton, one of our season permit holders of Haverfordwest with six fish for 12lbs 8ozs, Brian’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs. Honours however have to go to Brian Roberts of Ystradgynlais. Brian’s bag of 17lbs, this included a best fish of 7lbs was one of the best bags so far recorded during the 2010 season for an angler fishing fly from the boat. Well done Brian.

The increase in food available within the margins has also produced some excellent sport for those fishing fly from the bank. The “Top End” from the Bird-hide north has been fairly consistent as regards the average number of fish being taken on a daily basis. Brian Dalton has twice recorded the best weekly bag for an angler fishing fly from the bank over the past four weeks, but D Hughes of Kidwelly has the best 6 fish limit during this reporting period with a total bag weight of 13lbs.

Lines and patterns that have been consistently producing fish have been very dependant on the weather conditions of the day. Little surface ripple has generally meant that a good number of fish are feeding on or close to the surface, so lines from floating to DI 3 have been fairly successful. A heavy ripple and bright sunlight seems to have pushed the fish deeper, forcing anglers to opt for the heavier lines. Blobs, Nymphs, Viva’s, Catswhisker, Diawl Bach, Montana’s, Olive Lures and Boobies have been amongst the more productive patterns used.

Although anglers fishing ledgered worm from the bank haven’t been finding it as easy, good results are still being recorded on a daily basis. Notable bags for the month include: Ray Muskett of Tenby with 6 fish for 11lbs 9ozs, one of Ray’s smallest bags this season. Paddy Smiddy of Narbeth with a bag of 12lbs. Dave Edwards of Letterston with 6 fish for 13lbs 8ozs and Eileen Stafford, another season permit holder with 6 fish for 14lbs 8ozs.

Anglers are reminded that although we have not allowed any type of catch and release in the past, this is now an available option for those fishing fly from the boat. Any angler wishing to take advantage of this option is asked to speak to the ranger staff on site to familiarise themselves with the regulations relevant.
