Fishing Report up to 16th August, 2009

Late July early August at Llys-y-Fran normally sees anglers looking to fish the deeper areas of the reservoir, as higher surface water temperatures and lower oxygen content push fish into the cooler depths. As yet this has not happened, high water levels due to extended cool and wet periods have kept the surface temperature down to an un-seasonal 18°C at a time when we would expect it to be in excess of 20°, and fish can be seen moving on the surface in numbers during the early hours and during the calmer weather.

Fly anglers fishing from the bank are having some excellent sport with a good number of fish feeding heavily on fry in the marginal areas. Anglers opting for this method appear to be doing well in all areas accessible to bank fishing with the fly. Favourite tactics are floating to intermediate lines, with flies such as: fry imitations, hoppers, blobs, olive or black and green lures. Notable bags for the period are R Gooding of Aberdare, 6 fish for 13lbs 12 ozs including a best rainbow of 5lbs 2ozs. R Hooper with six fish for 14lbs. This included a best fish of 4lbs. D James of Llangynnor recorded the best bag for an angler fishing fly from the bank with six fish for 15lbs 2ozs, his bag included a best fish of 4lbs 6ozs.

Boat anglers are also doing well whilst fishing areas such as “The Point”, top end of the “Long Arm” and between “Gwr Coed” and the “Woodstock Inlet”. Successful results for these anglers have been recorded whilst using an assortment of flies from Boobies to Hoppers and on lines ranging from floating down to D.I. 7. Alan Grant of Stubbington took six fish for 13lbs 4ozs on his last visit. Dave Key of Cardigan recorded a six fish bag of 14lbs, but once again Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest recorded the best bag of the past month with six fish for 16lbs.

Honours for the month however have to go to young Sam Stafford of Clarbeston. Sam who has only taken up fly fishing this season landed a 6lb rainbow on a Cats Whisker whilst fishing from the field. Nice one Sam but don’t rub it in with your mum just because your fish was bigger than hers.

Worm anglers have been having mixed results with some areas fishing consistently well, whilst others have only been producing low numbers of fish. Areas that have been fishing well are “The Big Meadow”, “Badgers” and the second half of the “Field”. Campbell Richards recently recorded a six fish bag of 14lbs 8ozs with a best fish of 5lbs. J Elias of Aberystwyth took six fish for 15lbs 12ozs. The best bag of the month goes to E Mathias with a best fish of 4lbs 10ozs and a total bag weight of 16lbs 9ozs.

This week’s free permit was won by C Hetherington of Pembroke Dock.
