September has once again proved to be a month definitely dictated too by weather conditions. The good weather experienced during the middle of the month gave anglers visiting the Reservoir some good sport on both Ledgered Worm and Fly, with Fly boat producing some cracking six fish limits. However the wet and windy conditions prevalent during the start and close of the month, definitely tempered the overall monthly figures.

Despite the conditions certain areas of the Reservoir appear to have produced good average catches throughout. Those anglers opting to use Ledgered Worm are still producing consistent catches from areas such as “Badgers”, “Big Meadow” and the end of the “Field”. Those fishing Fly Boat are having the same level of success when fishing “The Point” and the top end of the main arm, whilst Fly Bank anglers are still doing very well from anywhere north of “Velindre Point”.

Over the past few weeks the majority of six fish limits on Ledgered Worm have all shown an average fish size of 2lbs, with a good number of limit bags including at least one fish in excess of 5lbs. J Thomas of Llanelli recorded a six fish bag of 17lbs 8ozs whilst fishing this method. His bag included a Rainbow Trout 6lbs 8ozs. C Harts of Jefferston recorded a bag weight of 17lbs 12ozs for five fish, with a best fish of 6lbs 4ozs.

Honours for the past few weeks however must go to S Smith and H Smith of Newport who between them took twelve fish for 32lbs 7ozs on their last visit to the Reservoir. This was achieved whilst fishing Fly from the boat and included one of the best individual bags recorded on the boat for the 2008 season. S Smith with six fish weighed in a very respectful 20lbs 7ozs. This included a best fish of 8lbs 5ozs.

This week’s free permit was won by D Reynolds of Haverfordwest.

All anglers are reminded that although the season itself finishes on 31st October, the Reservoir does offer winter fishing for a limited period. During the close season this will be available from the 1st November until 14th December 2008. Bank fishing and boat fishing will be available between 09.30 and 16.00hrs during this period. Cost will be £12 per permit with a six fish limit. Anglers wishing to hire boats will have an additional cost of £8 on top of their permit price.
