Over the past two weeks things have certainly changed for the better for those anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir in Pembrokeshire. June as expected proved to be a difficult month for both Fly and Ledgered Worm as some anglers struggled to find fish in numbers, despite this good catches were being recorded on a daily basis. Thankfully there has been a marked change over the past fortnight. High water levels and low surface temperatures, especially considering the time of year, linked with a good natural source of food seems to have perked things up. Fish are now being taken along most bank stretches on both permitted methods. Those anglers opting to fish Fly from the boat are finding the margins the most productive areas. Intermediate lines with the usual lures seem to be producing well for anglers fishing Fly from both bank and boat.
The same reporting period has also seen a marked increase in the number of fish over 4lbs being weighed in. The majority of limit bags that have been recorded during the first half of July all include at least one fish of or over this weight, giving a good boost to the average bags now being taken.
D Cashmore of Narbeth recorded the best bag for an angler fishing Fly from the bank over the past week. His six fish limit weighed in at 12lbs 10ozs and included a best fish of 4lbs. All his fish were taken on either a Cats Whisker or Gold head Damsel.
Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest, one of our season permit holders recorded the best fish of the week for an angler fishing Fly. This was a Rainbow of 5lbs 14ozs taken whilst fishing from the boat and definitely helped to bump up his six fish bag weight which was a very respectable 16lbs in total. Brian however didn’t manage to take the best bag of the week from the boat, his partner on the day Newton Lee of Narbeth another of our season permit holders, had this distinction, his six fish limit which included a best fish of 4lbs 14ozs totalled 17lbs 14ozs.
Ledgered Worm has also picked up with some very good weights being recorded during the same period, as was clearly shown over this last weekend. Paddy Smiddy of Narbeth took six fish for 13lbs 12 ozs on Saturday whilst fishing the “Bull Field”. Bill Lloyd of Broadhaven took six fish for 15lbs 2ozs; this included a best fish of 5lbs from the same area of bank. Charlie Deakin of Clarbaston Road recorded a six fish limit of 19lbs 8ozs on the same day from the “Field”. Charlie’s bag also included the best fish of the week with a Rainbow Trout of 8lbs. Honours of the week however must go to Ray Muskett of Saundersfoot, another season permit holder who on Sunday recorded the best bag of the 2008 season so far. His six fish limit which included fish of 5lbs 7ozs and 5lbs 4ozs totalled 21lbs 3ozs. Well done Ray.
