20th July, 2009

The past four weeks has seen a continuation of the good sport now being offered to anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. The fine weather experienced during late May and early June, stayed with us until the end of the first week in July, and anglers have been able to maximize on the number of fish feeding within the margins. Fish are still feeding heavily on fly and fry, throughout most regions of the reservoir, and large numbers are being seen on a daily basis within the upper reaches.

The amount of food available on or near the surface means that those anglers opting to fish fly from the boat, are enjoying some excellent sport, with a good proportion of them achieving their bag limits. Tawe Angling Club proved this on their visit on the 12th July, when 15 anglers landed a total of 85 fish between them, at an average of 5.6 fish per angler. Terry Lougher recorded both the best fish and bag on the day, with six fish for 19lbs 7ozs including a best rainbow of 6lbs 8ozs. Well done Terry.

Other notable bags taken whilst fishing fly from the boat include: Colwyn Owen of Haverfordwest with six fish for 13lbs 9ozs. Mike Elias of Carmarthen with six fish for 15lbs, Mike’s bag included a best fish of 5lbs. P J Evans or Gabby as he his known, also of Carmarthen with six fish for 16lbs 8ozs and a best fish of 4lbs 7ozs. Nice one Gabby. Newton Lee of Clunderwen with six fish for 16lbs and a best fish of 5lbs 6ozs, once again beating his boat partner Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest. Brian’s bag weighed in at a very respectful 14lbs 5ozs, giving them a combined weight of 30lbs plus for the second month running.

Feeding patterns have also increased the sport now offered to fly bank anglers, with areas such as “The Field”,  “Badgers”, “Rainbow Bay” and the “Top End” once again fishing very well. Notable bags for anglers fishing this method include: Elwyn Bevan of Narbeth, one of our season permit holders, with a best fish of 4lbs 14ozs and a six fish limit of 14lbs 8ozs. C Marklew of Kigetty with six fish for 15bs 4ozs. Steve Thomas of Haverfordwest with six fish for 15lbs 8ozs. Steve’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs 8ozs, so a good average weight for the remaining five fish.

Anglers fishing ledgered worm from the bank haven’t been finding it as easy, although good results are still being recorded on a daily basis. Some of the best results are from our season permit holders and anglers that know the water well. As with the fly, some of the best results are being achieved when fishing close in on the areas of bank offering shallower margins. Ray Muskett of Tenby has recorded two notable bags over the past month with six fish limits of 15lbs 4ozs and 18lbs 13ozs. Eileen Stafford of Clarbeston Road, another of our season permit holders with a 16lbs bag that included a best fish of 5lbs 8ozs.

Honours however must go to two of our junior anglers who landed the two best fish of the month. James Lewis of Wiston took his best fish by far when landing a Rainbow of 8lbs 8ozs on ledgered worm from “The Woods” and six year old Loui Davies of Narbeth. Loui took five fish for 18lbs 10ozs whilst fishing ledgered worm from the “Old Slip” with a best fish of 8lbs 10ozs. Well done Loui, I know your Dad wasn’t happy that day as he blanked.
