The ideal fishing weather experienced over the past few weeks has certainly turned things around at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. Fish are now being seen in numbers, feeding heavily on both fly and fry within the upper reaches throughout most regions of the water. Average bag weights are improving due to the abundance of natural food now available and a slight increase in the size of fish being stocked.
Anglers fishing the fly from either bank or boat are now having some of the best sport so far offered during the 2009 season, especially whilst using floating or intermediate lines with patterns that include flies such as, Buzzers, Hoppers, Blobs, Bibbio’s, Cormorants, Diawl Bach, olive or black and green lures and small boobies. The “Washing Line” is one of the favourite methods at the moment, producing good results with a large number of anglers achieving their bag limit when opting to fish this style.
Notable limit bags from the boat over the reporting period are as follows; Mike Davies of Carmarthen who took six fish on his last visit for a respectful 11lbs 3ozs. Mike’s bag included a best fish of 2lbs 8ozs. Alan Grant of Stubbington with six fish for 13lbs. This bag also included a best fish of 2lbs 8ozs. P Jones of Ammanford with six fish weighing in at 14lbs. This limit bag included a best fish of 3lbs ½.
The best two limit bags achieved from the boat over this period were recorded by two of our season permit holders whilst fishing together. Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest and Newton Lee of Clunderwen recorded a 12 fish joint bag weight of 30lbs 8ozs. Newton’s six fish which included a best Rainbow of 3lbs 8ozs, totalled 15lbs, whilst Brian’s which included 3 fish of 3lbs, totalled 15lbs 8ozs beating Newton by 8 ozs. Nice one Brian.
Steve Thomas of Haverfordwest however, has to take honours over the past four weeks. He on two occasions has recorded the best bag weight for an angler fishing fly from the bank. During his visit on the 29th May he took four fish for 13lbs 11ozs, his bag included fish of 5lbs, 4lbs, 2lbs 8ozs and 2lbs 3ozs. On his last visit he recorded no only the best bag of 2009 for an angler fishing fly from the bank but also the best fish of the past month. His six fish limit weighed in at 19lbs and included a best fish of 8lbs. Well done Steve.
Although the improvement in “top of the water sport” has slowed things down for those anglers opting to fish Ledgered Worm, good bags are still being recorded on a daily basis. Ray Muskett of Tenby, another of our season permit holders, took six fish on Saturday for 15lbs 5ozs. Graham Price of Saundersfoot, one of our regular day permit anglers, took six fish for 15lbs 12ozs, one of his best bags, with a best fish of 4lbs 4ozs. M Rowlands of Fishguard recorded the best bag for an angler using this method during the reporting period with a six fish limit of 18lbs 5ozs, including a best fish of 7lbs 5ozs.
