The past month has seen a marked change in the sport being offered to anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. The fine weather experienced during the second half of June and early July has caused a rapid rise in surface water temperatures, despite the cold start to the season. Despite these high temperatures, anglers are once again able to maximize on the number of fish feeding within the margins. Fish are feeding heavily on fly and fry, throughout most regions of the reservoir, and large numbers are being seen on a daily basis within the upper reaches.

The amount of food available on or near the surface means that those anglers opting to fish fly from both boat and bank are enjoying some excellent sport, with a good proportion of them achieving their bag limits. This was proven by one of our season permit holders during in the week ending Sunday 11th July, he landed 26 fish in five visits whilst fishing fly from the bank. His area of success was from the Bird-hide to the “Top-end”.

Some notable bags taken whilst fishing fly from the boat include: G Owens of Llanelli with six fish for 13lbs 6ozs. Newton Lee of Clynderwen with six fish for 13lbs 8ozs, and Dai Key of Cardigan with 6 fish for 16lbs. Dai’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs 4ozs.

Recent feeding patterns have increased the sport offered to fly bank anglers, with areas such as “Badgers”, “Rainbow Bay” and the “Top End” now proving fairly productive. Notable bags for anglers fishing this method include: Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest, one of our season permit holders, with a six fish limit of 12lbs 4ozs. D Goodson of Cardiff with six fish for 13bs 11ozs. D Morgans of Carmarthen with 6 fish for 14lbs 2ozs and once again, Steve Thomas of Haverfordwest with six fish for 16lbs. Steve’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs, so a good average weight for the remaining five fish.

Anglers fishing ledgered worm from the bank haven’t been finding it as easy, although good results are still being recorded on a daily basis by those anglers knowing the water. Ray Muskett of Tenby has recorded two notable bags over the past month with six fish limits of 14lbs 2ozs and 15lbs 3ozs.

Anglers should note that there has been a recent escape of small fish from the cages, due to Cormorant activity and that although the majority of these are now 10inches in length, any fish under this size can be returned.

As of the 1st of August 2010, it is also our intention to introduce a “Catch and Release” permit for anglers fishing fly from the boat. This will only be available from the boat and any angler wishing to fish this method is asked to ring 07771916732 or 07881905937 for confirmation of the regulations as regards this provision.
