Anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir are still after four and a half weeks of the 2006 season, finding things hard. We would normally have expected a gradual sustained improvement in weather conditions during March, as for previous years, however such has still failed to materialize. Cold northerly winds and almost arctic conditions experienced during the first part of the month were exchanged for cold easterlies during the third quarter of March, and these have now become wet and very windy south westerly during the past few days.

Despite the weather conditions the weekend saw a number of clubs host competitions from both boat and bank at the Reservoir. Cwmllynfell Angling Club along with Dorking Fly Fishers, held boat competitions on Saturday, whilst Ammanford Angling Club and Pembs Angling both held bank competitions the following day. Sunday also saw Pontardawe hold the first of their club competitions fished from the boat at Llys-y-Fran during the 2006 season. Although results were below average on past seasons for these competitions, most anglers did manage to take fish and the average weight per fish was excellent.

The best six fish bag for the week taken on the fly was landed by Paul Griffiths formally of Fishguard, who weighed in an overall bag weight of 15lbs. His fish were taken whilst fishing fly from the boat as one of the Dorking Fly Fishers competitors.

The best bag taken from the bank goes to Nigel Bevan of Narbeth, one of our season permit holders with six fish for a total weight of 15lbs 8ozs. Nigel’s fish were taken whilst fishing ledgered worm from the bank.

The best fish of the week goes to Chris Downing of Ammanford who took a 4lb 13oz Rainbow Trout during the Ammanford Anglers competition on Sunday.

This week’s free permit, from all day permit returns submitted, goes to W Lloyd of Broadhaven.

The head of fish now held within the Reservoir, linked to an improvement in weather conditions must mean that April will produce some excellent sport for anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran.
