The start of the 2007 season at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir can only be described as unusual; we would normally have expected to see fish being caught in numbers from both bank and boat. Such was not the case; many anglers have done well although the wait for their full bag has probably been a little longer than expected.

Cold northerly winds throughout most of March appeared to drive the majority of the fish out into the deeper water, making life difficult for both bank and boat anglers. Those fishing ledgered worm produced some of the best results with a number of bags between 15lbs and 20lbs being recorded during the period. D Jones of Pontarddulais took the best bag using this method, his six fish weighed in at exactly 20lbs with a best fish of 5lbs.

The weather certainly didn’t help anglers fishing the fly, those fishing fly from the bank struggled to find fish in any numbers within casting distance of the bank, whilst those fishing fly from the boat, although being over fish found it very difficult to get deep enough even on hi-d lines because of the wind strength. Even so many fly anglers did manage, if a bit slower than normal, to take their bag limits. These ranged from 12lbs to 16lbs with our own Peter Phillips of Goodwick recording the best by a fly angler. Andrew Williams of Ammanford took the best fish of the month whilst fishing fly from the boat, his over-wintered Rainbow weighed in at 6lbs 13ozs.

Happily I can report that April has arrived with the expected change in weather, variable winds and brighter conditions have brought the fish up into the higher reaches were the food source is in abundance. Heavy fly hatches are now taking place throughout all areas of the Reservoir with fish in numbers now being seen on top. This along with the good weather experienced over the Easter break should bring the water into its own, fly anglers should certainly be able to maximize on the sport being offered to them.
