Llys-y-Fran Reservoir continues to fish well, especially for those anglers opting to use the Fly, be this from the bank or from the boat.

The past few weeks have seen a marked change in the feeding habits of fish stocked into the water. The cold weather experienced at the beginning of the 2006 season produced one of our slowest starts ever, and even though fish were stocked on a weekly basis, few in comparison to the numbers going in, came out. This is now beginning to pay dividends, both in quantity and quality. Buzzer hatches which would normally have been seen throughout March and April appeared in May along with our first terrestrials, bringing the fish up from the deeper regions, into shallower waters. This movement has produced some excellent six fish limits during the past fortnight.

Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest, one of our season permit holders recorded the best bag for the second week running, his six fish taken whilst fishing Fly from the bank, totalled 19lbs 4ozs with a best fish of 4lbs 10ozs, well done Brian.

Thomas Moody, or George as everybody calls him of Talbenny took the heaviest six fish limit for an angler fishing ledgered worm from the bank during the same period. His bag weight totalled 16lbs 8ozs yet only included a best fish of 3lbs 8ozs.

Matthew Phillips of Goodwick, Fishguard took the best six fish bag for an angler fishing Fly from the boat. His six fish taken on Sunday 28th totalled 16lbs 12ozs and included a cracking 4lbs over-wintered Rainbow Trout.

The heaviest fish taken during the past week goes to Mr A Warren of Haverfordwest with a Rainbow Trout of 6lbs 2ozs.

The prospects for the more traditionalist Fly angler are certainly looking very good, present tactics include the use of floating and intermediate lines with mainly small Hoppers, Buzzers, Diawl Bach and Cormorants as preferred Flies.

This week’s free permit goes to S Thomas of Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth.
