The sport being offered to anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir has continued to improve as the surface water temperature rises. This improvement although slower than we would have expected over the past few weeks, was initially more noticeable amongst those anglers fishing either Ledgered Worm or Fly with Hi-D lines and Boobies as conditions conspired to keep the fish feeding deep.

Happily we can now report that fish have moved into the upper reaches throughout the Reservoir. Good buzzer hatches have been noted on days with little wind and fish have been seen feeding heavily on the surface, even on days with bright sunlight. The more traditional Fly Angler should, over the coming weeks be able to take advantage of this and improve his chances from both bank and boat.

The Reservoir hosted three Club competitions over the past weekend, all of which produced good angler averages. Saturday saw both Tawe Angling and Aberaeron Angling Club hold separate competitions with the majority of those taking part fishing from the boat. Tawe Angling with sixteen members taking part landed a total of 49 fish, an average of 4 fish per angler, with J Powell recording the best limit bag of 11lbs 9ozs for six fish. Aberaeron with ten anglers recorded an average of just under four fish per angler, in all 39 fish were caught. Alan Butler recorded the best result with six fish for 15lbs 5ozs.

Llandysul held their second club competition of 2006 fished at Llys-y-Fran on Sunday, fourteen anglers took part fishing Fly from the boat. In all 49 fish were caught at an average of 4.5 fish per angler.

Best bags for the past week from all permits submitted are as follows: Simon Dorras of Llechryd recorded the best bag for an angler fishing either method permitted, his six fish taken whilst fishing Fly from the boat weighed in total 18lbs 8ozs, well done Simon. The majority of his fish were taken on static buzzers in and around the “point”. Nigel Bevan of Llandisillio took the best recorded limit for an angler fishing Fly from the bank during the same period. His six fish bag weighed 15lbs 12ozs.

The heaviest six fish bag taken whilst fishing Ledgered Worm goes to John Morris of Narbeth, his bag weight totalled 15lbs, an average of 2.5lbs per fish a good average fish weight on any Reservoir. This week’s free permit is won by Dai Jeremiah of Fishguard, an angler who generally fishes Fly from the bank and who has so far, during the 2006 season, had what he considers an excellent season.
