The fine weather experienced towards the end of the last week has certainly improved the sport now on offer to anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. The bright conditions with light winds has caused a marked increase in air temperature which has resulted in some of our best “hatches” for the 2006 season so far.

Under normal annual weather conditions the Hawthorn Fly would have been with us in numbers, for the past few weeks. These, although they have been showing for the past fortnight, are only now within the past few days, appearing as we would expect. The increase both within the surface water temperature and the amount of wind born food available within the upper reaches was more than evident throughout the whole of Sunday 7th May. Fish could be seen, despite the bright conditions, rising throughout all regions of the Reservoir.

The general movement of resident fish, from the feeding deep to searching for food within the upper reaches became most noticeable during the recently held Llys-y-Fran Open Competition, a competition hosted by Llys-y-Fran Angling Club which is fished using Ledgered Worm and Fly from both bank or boat. Averages for competitors fishing Ledgered Worm amounted to only 1.5 fish per angler compared to a remarkable 5.0 fish per angler for those opting to fish Fly from either bank or boat.

Chris Rawle of Llandiello records the best six fish bag for the past seven days, his total bag weighed in at 13lbs 13.5ozs with a best fish of 3lbs 5.5ozs. Rob McConville of Haverfordwest took the best six fish bag for the same period whilst using Fly from the bank, his bag weight with a heaviest fish of only 2lbs 14ozs,  was a very respectful 13lbs 5.25ozs in total.

The heaviest bag of the week however, has to go to a Mr M Powell of Ystralfera with six fish for 14lbs 4ozs, taken whilst fishing Ledgered Worm from the bank. This week’s free permit, drawn from all day returns submitted goes to Mr T Moody of Talbenny.
