Parliamentary spokesman for angling Martin Salter MP continued his mullet fishing exploits with a trip to a Hampshire estuary in the company of Steve Smith, recently elected chairman of the National Mullet Club. Martin caught his first mullet last year and has developed a new interest in pursuing this most enigmatic of fish using standard coarse fishing tactics.

In a three hour session, Martin landed a brace of four pounders – best 4.08 – on breadflake fished under a two swan waggler to four pound line.

“I am really grateful to the lads from the National Mullet Club for introducing me to a new angling challenge with a fish that fights like hell and is difficult to tempt. So far I have only blanked once in five trips and there’s every possibility that mullet might turn out to be my lucky fish. I would recommend any coarse angler living within reasonable reach of an estuary to consider branching out into this fascinating aspect of our sport. The mullet really is the ultimate cross-over species.”

National Mullet Club chairman Steve Smith said:-
“Club members are really pleased that our fishing MP has not only helped us press the case with Ministers to have mullet designated a recreational species, but has enthusiastically embraced mullet fishing himself with a fair degree of success.”
