MEGAN BOYD HAILED 'FINEST IN WORLD'

NEWS FROM BONHAMS

A fly-tying vice which belonged to the legendary Miss Megan Boyd, who tied flies for Prince Charles, is for sale in the Sporting Sale in Edinburgh on 11 November, 2010.

Megan Boyd, who died in 2001 at the age of 86, was one of the best known salmon fly specialists in Britain and widely acknowledged as having been the finest tier of fishing flies in the world.  She is responsible for the blue and black fly which bears her name, regarded by fisherman as a godsend in even the most unpromising fishing conditions.

Megan Boyd worked for over 50 years in her bothy on the Kintradwell Estate, Sutherland. For most of that time she was without electricity which wasn’t installed until 1985.  Failing eyesight led to her retirement in 1988 when the Prince of Wales sent a telegram of good wishes.  He also visited Miss Boyd in Brora the year before her death.  She was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1971.  The vice is priced at between £100 and £200.

The sale also includes a cased trout by Peter Malloch of Perth which for over 100 years held the British record for a wild trout caught in British Fresh Water. The 29lb trout was  caught in Loch Stennes, in March 1889 and held the record until a 31lb 12oz Ferrox Brown trout was caught in Loch Awe in March 2002.  It is estimated at £2,000-3,000

The sale also offers three of Malloch’s cased salmon at estimates £1,500 – 3,000.  A keen naturalist from childhood, Peter Malloch started his taxidermy business in Perth in 1871 at the age of 18 and it remained a fixture in the town until 1981.  Malloch was an authority on salmon and trout and wrote what is still the standard work on their habits and how to fish for them.
