Residents from Mirehouse will be celebrating the completion of a £150,000 improvement project at Mirehouse Ponds with a community open day on Saturday 15 September, 2007, 10am- 3pm.

The improvements and open day will be officially launched by the Mayor of Copeland, Councillor Anne Faichney, at 11am.

The Environment Agency has been leading the project with Haig Angling Club, Copeland Borough Council, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and South Whitehaven Partnership to improve the fishery and wildlife area at Mirehouse Ponds.

The project, funded by Cleaner Safer Greener South Whitehaven, has improved access to the fishing ponds for young and disabled people, improved management of the wildlife areas and installed measures to prevent vandalism and improve safety.

Improvements include:

  • New information boards with details about the site;
  • New car parking and a one-way system to improve safety; 
  • New benches; 
  • Measures to reduce anti-social behaviour including new fencing and motor bike barriers; 
  • New storage facilities for Haig Angling Club’s equipment; 
  • New paths, suitable for prams and wheelchairs; 
  • New angling platforms; 
  • Cycle path lighting.

Mirehouse ponds was originally donated to Haig Colliery in 1982 for the community to enjoy. It is hoped It is hoped that through these improvements even more members of the community will continue to enjoy this wildlife haven for many years to come.
