Five teams of five battled it out on the River Trent at Fiskerton on Saturday 7th October 2017 for the chance to represent England in next year’s FIPS-ed Feeder World Club Championships to be held in Belarus.  Fishing to World Championship rules the match allowed the teams to experience bait limits, bait checks and the feeder restrictions that go hand in hand with the World Championships.

A cool blustery wind made it difficult for the anglers on the day and was probably the reason why small fish did not feed properly, although some good barbel and bream weights were taken to the scales, with the two end pegs scoring well.  Top Individual on the day was Drennan Barnsley Blacks Eddie Bridon who caught skimmers to 2lb, roach and a wayward chub at permanent peg 11, which was the upstream end peg A1.  The fish fed all day for Eddie on casters and worms fed through a groundbait feeder for a total weight of 22.350kg.

Downstream end peg 35 (E5) was home to Preston Innovations Telford’s Will Freeman, who had a slow start and didn’t catch the first of his four barbel until well into the match, being 8lb though was enough to win his section on its own.  Will’s four barbel and a bream went 18.675kg and he caught on a maggot feeder over a bed of hemp.  Wayne Bartholemew of Preston Innovations Telford at peg 30 (D5) also employed maggot feeder tactics to land six barbel late in the match and some roach for 16.500kg.

On the crucial team front it was a nail biting finish with only one point separating the top two teams.  Drennan Barnsley Blacks had held the upper hand for most of the match just ahead of last year’s finalists, Preston Innovations Telford but a chub caught by Telford’s Mick Vials in the dying minutes of the match swung the result in their favour and Preston Innovations Telford narrowly beat Drennan Barnsley Blacks with 11 points to 12 points.

The Angling Trust would like to thank Mark Morris and the Nottingham Piscatorial Society for their help and use of their waters.
