Eden Rivers Trust news release

Volunteers are needed to prevent the spread of the invasive plant Himalayan balsam in the Dalston area.  It is taking over the banks of the River Caldew and Dalston Parish Council and local residents are mobilising a work force to tackle it.

John Kelsey from Dalston Parish Council said, “Himalayan balsam in the Dalston area is a massive problem and we need to get on top of it.  We would like to work with local volunteers to control it and improve our recreation areas.”

Eden Rivers Trust is helping to coordinate it as part of the Eden Invasive Species initiative.  Alison Reed, Conservation Officer at ERT, said, “The area along the Caldew near Dalston is very popular with local people.  If the Himalayan balsam is not controlled it will take over the river banks and beyond, smothering areas where people picnic and walk their dogs, and spoiling this local beauty spot.  In the winter it dies back and leaves the river banks bare and vulnerable to erosion.”

To help with this vital local initiative, meet at 10 am at the Masonic Lodge behind the Nestle factory in Dalston on Monday 25 July 2011.  Volunteers will spend the morning pulling up Himalayan balsam by hand.  It is not difficult or strenuous work because balsam is very shallow rooted and pulls up easily.

Those involved will need gardening gloves, long-sleeved clothing, appropriate footwear, waterproofs if wet, and their own refreshments.  It is hoped to make this a regular weekly activity over the summer.

If anyone would like to volunteer they can just turn up on the day to help.  If there are any queries, they can contact:
