The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will be hoping to make a big splash at this year’s Fishing 2006 show at the SECC in Glasgow, launching a revolutionary new product to help reduce fishing-industry deaths.
On the main stand L28, during the three day event from 17-19 May, the RNLI will be promoting the MOB Guardian – a highly effective satellite-based vessel monitoring and man overboard system. It was designed particularly with fishermen in mind to try to reduce the number of serious incidents and deaths recorded each year. Following its inception, and a working partnership set up with McMurdo and AWS, the MOB Guardian unit is being launched at this year’s fishing show. A very successful pilot scheme has been run throughout the UK with 100 vessels trialling the device and this has delivered excellent results. MOB Guardian will be available to fishermen late summer 2006.
Visitors will be able to see the system on the RNLI stand and orders will be taken at the show. The RNLI is pleased to advise that grants will be available from SEERAD and DEFRA in most cases to help with the cost of the devices. Additional help is also available for those fishermen who insure their vessels with SUNDERLAND MARINE. Please ask for further details at the stand. RNLI personnel will be on hand to offer lots of help, general safety advice and will always be delighted to talk to you.
A separate stand, M34, will be dedicated to raising funds for the charity with gifts and publications for sale and the chance to sign up as an RNLI supporter.
Fishing Safety Manager for the RNLI, Ian Benham, will be speaking about sea safety innovations in the Seminar Theatre from 10.30 -11am on Wednesday 17 May. This will be followed by a presentation from McMurdo, RNLI’s development partner in the MOB Guardian system, and will explain how the device works.
