“Come along and join in”
Sharkatag is part of the Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network’s (SSACN – www.ssacn.org) campaign to highlight the urgent need for shark, ray and skate conservation in Scottish waters, as well as raising the public awareness of sea angling and its contribution to the economies of many coastal communities.
We are hoping to build on last years successful event when Sharkatag attracted over 200 volunteer sea anglers fishing from the shore, kayaks and boats. The response so far has been terrific as lots of last years participants and many new ones, are expected to come from all over the UK. This represents a tremendous commitment by anglers on their behalf to their sport and to conservation, especially so given the current economic situation.
Anglers will be fishing marks around the Solway looking to catch, tag and/or record data regarding a variety of shark species including tope, smoothound and spurdog.
Anyone wishing to take part can still register at http://www.tagsharks.com/tagging-programmes/sharkatag and each will each receive a Participants Pack with details about the weekend; SSACN best practice guides; a list of suggested launch sites and fishing spots; tagging instruction; fish return forms and one years free membership of SSACN.
The RNLI have also agreed to supply all taking part with copies of their new sea safety booklet and will be in attendance over the weekend to provide boat and safety advice.
