Sweethope Lough is turning back the hands of time by releasing 2,000 brown Trout.

After monitoring changes in angling over the last few years, the 2,000 juvenile brownies were released last week as part of an ongoing effort by Sweethope to get more people back into traditional style Lough fly fishing for brown Trout.

It is hoped that the fish, sized between 11 and 13 inches which were released into the top Lough at Sweethope, will take it back to its original purpose and will preserve future fish stocks by introducing sport fly fishing only for brown Trout, whilst rainbow and blue Trout will still be stocked on a weekly basis.

Sweethope isn’t just turning back time to get back to brown Trout fishing, but it is also looking to preserve stocks for future generations of anglers.

If people still want to take fish for the table, we have tickets available for both rainbow and blue Trout on both the top and bottom Loughs, however all brown Trout are to be carefully returned to the water. Sweethope wants to keep rods bent and give anglers top quality sport.”

Sweethope Lough is set in the beautiful Northumberland Hills on The Ray Estate, owned by Viscount Devonport. Established in 1730 by The Fenwick Family to provide fresh fish, a dam was later built to create two Loughs.

The Parson Family took over Sweethope in 1947 and leased it to the Vaux Breweries and Sweethope was opened to the public offering natural wild brown Trout fishing.

Viscount Devonport took the lakes in hand in 1984 and introduced rainbow Trout to compliment the brown Trout fishing, and in 1998 he introduced the more powerful blue Trout.

Hardy & Greys Ltd would like to offer their continued support towards Sweethope Loughs in their ongoing effort to encourage more people into angling.
