Weekly Report for Week Ending 3rd January, 2010

The fishery is still relatively ICE FREE, thanks to the ICE PREVENTION WAVE MACHINES & AERATORS.  All Fly and Bait Ponds are open for fishing all winter 8am till 5pm, 7 days.

Wellsfield Trout Fishery owners, fishery manager and bailiffs would like to thank all anglers who supported the fishery over the year.  The fisheries reputation has went from strength to strength in 2009 and Wellsfield is one of the best day ticket bank fisheries in Scotland.  There has been anglers visiting from all over Scotland from as far as Inverness and Fort William and from England, Ireland and Wales.  The fishery is now well established and the marginal and aquatic fly and bait life is prolific.  The water quality is excellent.

The fishery was re-awarded Troutmaster Status for 2010, and also re-awarded its 4 Star Rating from Visitscotland for 2010.

The fishery management work undertaken in 2009 has been at its best so far with many major improvements made to make the fishery top class.  The result was record hatches of buzzers, damsel fly, mayfly, dragonfly, daddies and other insects.  It was also noted that the population of small fish fry was up, including minnows and stickleback.

The Stocking Policy was improved and Scottish Rainbows and Devon Rainbows were stocked, the average size was increased with larger fish and fish stocking numbers were increased on the previous year, the average fish size (3lb+), the fish quality, strength and fight was rated higher than ever.  Fish catch returns, number of anglers, number of double figure specimen trout, number of 4lb-10lb fish and number of Troutmasters entries were all up on last year.  Blue Trout, Brown Trout and Tiger trout were stocked in addition to the Rainbows.

Wellsfield provided a record number of fishing lessons this year to teaching young anglers and older anglers how to fly fish or bait fish.  We are proud to see so many new anglers are taking up the sport.  Junior angler numbers encouragingly increased.  The number of fishing lessons for children and adults was a record indicating that many people are very keen to get into the sport.

The number of £50 Yellow and £500 White tagged prize winners was also up.  Club Bookings and corporate days were a major success with the barbecue/buffet services.  Charity fundraisers, youth group outings, special needs and disabled group days were all a big success.

The top flies were Yellow Dancer, Orange Cheeked Black Buzzer, Diawl Bach and Damsel Nymph.
The fishery summer evening sessions were extended with additional floodlights around the fishery ponds. The Automatic Ice Prevention Wave Machines ensured all 3 lochans were open in winter. Fishing Pegs were improved including disabled access pegs.
