The return of the UK's most sought after centrepin reel! – Review by Alex Roberts

I was one of the unlucky ones who tried to buy one of these when they originally came out but I missed out because the demand was so high. Now I’ve finally got my hands on one I see why.

There must be loads of anglers out there like me. I’d always wanted to give centrepin fishing ago but the cost had been prohibitive. Most on the market seemed to come with a three-figure price tag.

So when these were launched, it’s no wonder they sold like hotcakes.

I fell in love with mine the moment I took it out the box. Not only does it look great, one spin of the handle and it rotates for ages!

On my first session out with it, I took to stretch of my local River Wey. I found a lovely even glide and sent a stickfloat downriver. The line paid off the drum beautifully and only stopped when I struck into a roach.

There are so many great features on the reel that it’s hard to believe it sells for just £40.

Marco Cortesi Signature Centrepin Mk2 Reel

The spool is nice and big at 4.5ins diameter and this allows for a lovely line lay, speedy retrieve and increased smoothness as the line comes off the drum. There’s also an adjustable line guard fitted to suit your preferences.

One other nice touch is the neoprene case that comes with it and I especially like the fact this can fit over the reel when it’s still attached to the rod to keep it well protected.

For so many years centrepin fishing was the preserve of either the fly angler or the wealthy – but not any more. At this price it falls within almost every angler’s budget and I simply wouldn’t be without mine now.

It’s opened up a whole new fishing experience, and few items of tackle can ever say that.
