River Kennet - Thatcham   0945 - 1215   Hot and sultry - perfect weather to spend the morning up to your thighs in cool river water!   1 Chub 3lb 9oz, 6 Dace, 2 Roach and 5 brownies - 2 over 1lb.   Had to go to Tone's to pick up bait and permits for this evening - not that I need an excuse to fish here! River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1630 - 1900   Heavy thundery showers. River Kennet - Newbury   0500 - 0830   Warm, overcast-ish morning. River getting quite low after a dry summer (so far)   1 Chub; 1¾lb, 4 Roach; 1 of 12oz, 27 Dace, 1 Perch c¾lb & 2 Brownies both ±1lb.   Pleasant morning's trotting and home in time for breakfast. Carp on the fly

24th July, Hampshire Commercial   As the title suggests I decided to try my hand at something a little different after some persuasion from a mate. We arranged to meet after work at a commercial venue neither of us had fished. Contrast of 2 lakes 22.7.13

8-9.45pm   We've had 3 weeks of very hot weather by UK standards. It was a choice between surface fishing for carp or trying a weirpool on the theory that the fish would have congregated there because of the higher oxygen level. Newbury AA Stillwater - Thatcham.   2000 - 0000   Warm with a lovely warm breeze to keep the mossies off - still 19ºC when I packed up at midnight.   1 Carp 5lb 8oz.   Same plan, different lake to the evening before. Try for a crucian and hope that the carp would come into the margins at dark. Neither part of which worked! VAC League Match 3-Newlands Hall, Moat Lake-July 7th

A hot, sunny, still morning greeted us when arriving at the venue. Friday Evening at the River-July 5th

My wife and I visited the VAC club stretch of the River Lea at Marford to see if I could catch my first river barbel. We arrived at this very popular venue at around 4.30pm to find most swims taken, we managed to drop into peg 11. VAC League Match 2-Grand Union Canal at Tring Stn-June 23rd

Our first time on this bit of the canal. I fed down the track with chopped worm and caster, on the far shelf with loosefed casters and in the track to my right with a few pellets.   I had a lot of problems with tree litter covering the whole swim some of the time, sometimes I could not get a bait in. NAA Stillwater - Thatcham   1930 - 2330   Warm and sultry - 26 ->18c. Shirtsleeves and shorts - until the mossies turned up in force!   2 Carp; 10lb 9oz, 3lb 15oz. 10 Roach.   Another cunning plan bites the dust. Paul and I had agreed to meet up for an after work session hoping for crucians, with a carp or 2 off the top as Plan B. Warm evening 15.7.13

8 - 10pm We've had a hot, dry July and the most obvious thing to do seemed to me to be to try for some carp off the top. In fact I expected everyone else to think the same, so was surprised when I got to the car park for our easiest carp lakes to find it empty. NAA Stillwater - Widmead.   2030 - 0630   Warm still night. I've been so busy recently I haven't been able to update my entries. What with 5 mental days at Glastonbury and constant work I've had no time to fish so my only updates are from a couple of quick 20 hour sessions that I've managed to squeeze in.   23rd May - Berkshire club lake.   I'd planned this session to try out my new 11' 2 1/4lb small water rods. I'm giving up.....

On barbel until the end of August or until we have had a decent amount of rain!   Another fruitless evening after barbel on the Kennet, fished from half 7 until 11pm and the only time my tip moved was when bats flew into it. Starting to get a bit frustrated with it now so I will see out the rest of summer after carp and tench. River Kennet - Padworth   1930 - 2330   Warm evening with a nice breeze to keep the mossies off. Still 16ºC when I packed up.   1 Barbel; 5lb 11oz   Unusually for me ledgered with two rods (and even more unsually left the trotting gear at home). One rod on boilie and one on halibut pellet. Pellet rod went off within ½ hour of arriving - a great start. Unfortunately it was then down to the crayfish to move in. Spinning for perch 8.7.13

A hot, sunny, clear day. Not exactly a day for perch you might say, except I once read something by Archie Braddock which claimed the opposite. He claimed that in summer the best approach was to go out in the middle of a hot day and trot worm at half depth. Phew! I tried it once a few years ago on the Kennet at Speen Moor. A few off the top

Had a couple of short sessions surface fishing for carp over the weekend, the fishing was slow with many fish just cruising around, not interested in feeding and generally avoiding areas with lots of freebies. Oh so close

Kennet near Newbury 17:30-21:30   Spent a few hours trotting what is one of my favorite stretches of the Kennet but rather than moving around a lot I concentrated on one swim and tried to get my feeding regular and accurate as I am hopeless at it!   The bites came steadily, I rested the swim for a minute or 2 after each fish (bar the 3 trout I left it 10 minutes while still feeding) a pretty even mix of dace, gudgeon, chublets and roach all mainly small with the odd bigger fish and a surpris

River Kennet - Newbury   2045 - 0000   Warm and overcast - river still has good flow though a little turbid.   2 Dace & a spottie.   Planned to be bankside way earlier - but was seriously delayed getting home. Quick 20 mins trotting followed by 3 hours looking at a mainly stationary rod tip. Had a couple of promising rattles but nothing that developed into anything 'hittable.'

NAA Stillwater - Widmead   0430 - 1030   Overcast clearing to bright sunshine - quite breezy.   1 Carp 5lb 15oz, 1roach, 1perch, dozen+ rudd.   Fruitless morning after crucians. At least I wasn't plagued by nuisance carp - the only one I caught was deliberate - off the top on bread. Rudd were a bit of a menace - especially as they gave very crucian-like bites at times.....!

Finally a little success

Visited the same venue my 3lb chub came from last week, we had a look at the main river first of all but only a few swims are reachable due to thick stinging nettle and brambles so we opted to fish the backstream again.   I knew before I arrived which swim I was going to fish, for some reason it had been in my head since my last visit, it just had to produce a fish or two!
