I thought my plan was infallible

River Kennet and K&A Canal, Newbury, Saturday 2nd March 2013   You’d be forgiven for think that some of these blogs are getting a bit ‘samey’. You’d be right too, one of reasons is that the two venues I’m fishing are quite close together and spending a couple of hours trotting the river before targeting perch prevents me from arriving at the canal too early. Another reason is that the river venue is producing some very nice grayling and dace, I haven’t got the scales or camera out for them

Chilly day for carp....

But that didn't stop us!! Started at Reepham fishery just after 8:30. The fishery consists of a large square lake that is connected to a "wilder" lake via a channel. The "wild" lake makes for very pleasurable fishing with its many cut backs and reed beds. Plenty of features to fish to. My father, brother and I headed to that lake, getting into a swim large enough for the three of us. We fished simple tackle, waggler set ups on 8lb line. its all in the story...

I Pro Staff for a US company that creates and sells ultra light telescopic fishing rods called pen rods; they are basically what got me back into fishing after years and years. (that's another story) All you need to know really is that I test the rods to destruction in the hopes of catching the biggest possible fish I can on them! The coldest feet in the south.

27th Feb - K&A Canal & Avington Trout Fishery.   I'll start with a pic of the most vividly marked perch I've ever seen. My workmate caught it on the fly this afternoon. We were just walking back along the lakes with a customer when I spotted a perch right in close. He grabbed the anglers rod that had an apps bloodworm fly attached. The water is gin clear and as the fish was literally 2 ft from the edge so we could see everything. He dropped the fly in, twitched in once to catch the

Got to start somewhere

well; here goes nothing.... ive been fishing for a few years now after a restart... I used to fish a lot as a youngster with my dad and brother and then just sort of gave up over time. Then various things came about and dragged me back to the bankside!   im a simple fisherman; I don't use fancy kit or rigs, I don't enjoy a lot of the newer techniques....id much rather just have a waggler and keep things as simple as possible.   my local area has decent lakes for carp,bream,tench and roach

Big stripeys all round :).

23rd Feb - K&A Canal   Had a call from my Dad around midday to say he was going down the canal and did I want to meet him after work. River Frome, Wool   0830 - 1500   Cold and overcast - max 2ºC with a raw northerly wind. River high with a little colour (more than the Kennet!) but within its banks (at last!). EA Gauge at East Stoke 1.14m   7 Grayling - best 3; 2lb 9oz, 2lb 2oz & 2lb0oz, 1 Sea trout; 1¼lb.   First Frome trip of the season and given the season on this bit of river closes on 28th Feb, my last! 22 February

River Kennet - Nr Newbury   0730 - 1745   Cold and overcast with a raw easterly wind - though thankfully reasonably sheltered on most swims at this venue. Max temp all day was 2ºC though judging by the times the line was freezing in the rings it was close to or below freezing for all but 2 or 3 hours around midday. WT 43ºF River clear with good flow.   10 Chub; 8 over 2lb, best 3, 4lb 12oz, 4lb 6oz, 4lb 3oz. 18 Perch; all small except for one clonker of 3lb 3oz!. 3

Finally done it :).

I've finally bettered my perch pb. After a few close shaves recently, and a lot of effort over the past 2 winters I popped out for a couple of hours tonight and managed 6 perch - 3.03, 2.14, 2.07, 1.8 and a couple of small ones. I also lost a decent pike.   Both the 2 bigger fish where caught from the first area I tried. I had the 1.8 first so persevered and had the 3.03 shortly afterwards before moving15 yards down the bank and casting to the same area, hoping the different angle of retr

K&A Canal, Newbury, Sunday 17th February 2013   After Saturday’s drama how could I not revisit the scene? I had plenty of lobs and although the weather wasn’t quite as conducive to perch fishing it was pleasant enough and dusk was sure to come. Scuppered the opportunity I've been waiting for.,

19th Feb, K&A canal:   I got off work at a decent enough time today so decided to stop off at a new stretch for the witching hour (well, half an hour by the time I arrived). Its been a while (again)

Sunday 17th feb   Finally made it out for my second short session of the year (first was on the k&a and produced a few decent sized brownies).   I had a few hours before work and with the reports of big perch from the canal a couple of hours with the spinning rod would surely bag me a few fish! Fairly quiet today.

River Kennet and K&A Canal, Newbury, Saturday 16th February 2013   Quite a contrast to last week’s weather, not exactly balmy but no sleet, no rain and air temps threatening double figures…bliss. Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham   1300 - 1730   Mild, overcast with some 'milky' sunshine at times. 10ºC. 16 February (part1)

Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne   0700 - 1100   Overcast with 'milky' sunshine. 2º - 10ºC. What a difference 10 minutes can make.

Sat 16th Feb 13 - Various stretches of the K&A canal:   Well what a days lure fishing I've had. I had planned to fish somewhere around Newbury for the late morning/afternoon before meeting the old man for the evening on a different stretch of the canal.   I actually ended up spending an hour in the tackle shop nattering, which only gave me an hour or so to explore a few bits around the town. VAC Match 15 - Lakeside Farm - Feb 10th 2013

So it was time for the last match of the Verulam Angling Club championship season.   Going into this match I was in second place in the league. There are 15 matches in the season and your best 10 results count. The leader of the league (AllanB) had 840 points and I was on 795, my lowest counting score was 45 so I knew that if I could win or come second I would go into 1st place as long as Allan did not improve his lowest score of 65, which equates to 8th place.   There were just 14 on this m

The desire is well and truly back..

7th Feb 13, canalised stretch of the Kennet.   I finally managed to get back out with the lure rod. Spare time is at a real premium with my new job and juggling my social life and fishing is proving pretty difficult.   I ventured back to the same stretch once again, largely because most other stretches are all but un-fishable due to the flow and water levels.
