Left it a bit late

Kennet & Avon Canal, Thatcham, Wednesday 6th March 2013   A short bonus trip courtesy of my boss and the need to use up annual leave before the end of March.   I’m still trying to work out this stretch of the canal. Early January I had a couple of great back to back sessions which produced six perch at an average weight of just under 3lbs. That success was followed by a blank and then a couple of weeks later Chris Plumb caught a monstrous ‘four’ with a 2-15 cameo from me, our only perch

Biggest pike of the season and another pb perch.

7th March - Hamps. River & K&A canal   I've just returned from another fantastic days lure fishing.   A mate of mine is the keeper on a lovely stretch of river in Hampshire and after seeing a few big pike recently (one so big it's been christened, Big Bertha) he invited me down for a quick go at them. It was flowing pretty hard, but by sticking to the deeper water we managed 4 between us and a few obligatory trout. Unfortunately "bertha" didn't put in an appearance, though he did

7 March (part 2)

River Kennet - Newbury   1100 - 1400   Overcast with drizzle. AT&WT both 49ºF. River still high with little colour - has dropped very little in the last month.   2 Barbel; 2¼lb & 3½lb. 2 Grayling; both 8-10oz. 14 Dace a few chunky ones but nothing particularly big. 1 Roach ½doz Gudgeon.   Trotting session for what ever comes along - but hoping a barbel or a chub or two would put in an appearance - so jolly happy with a brace. Could have been so muc

7 March (part 1)

Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham   0600 - 1030   Mild, overcast with continuous drizzle. AT has averaged over 9ºC for the last 48 hours and the WT is catching up (48ºF) which is 9ºC in new money!   2 Perch; 3lb 15oz (and a bit - if it had swallowed the lob and not spat it out it might have tipped 4!), 2lb 2oz. 1 Pike 2¼lb.   1st part of a 'Reverse Rusty' session (Dawn on the canal - midday on the river). And conditions absolutely screamed perch so it was

A little catch up.

I've been back to the canal a couple more times since my last entry but only for an hour or so per session. The first was spent checking out a new stretch that proved to be a bit of a struggle. Only one 50yard area produced, but the result was well worth the effort. I had a nice perch of approx 2.4 in the net but before I got a chance to weigh it the old man shouted that he was playing a bigger one. Sure enough, in the net it went and at first sight it was indeed a better one, we guessed aro

Blanko ergo sum

.....as the great French mind-angler Rene Dust-carts once said.   I wondered whether to report on my latest blank, and decided that, if I didn't, you might think I no longer exist.   Well I haven't caught much this winter - a mixture of other commitments, minor back trouble, and of course downright (and totally undeserved) bad luck! I've chucked a few spinners, impaled a few lobworms, caught one or two roach and perch, but nothing really worthy of comment. Yesterday was a typical example. Th

No fishing this weekend - building up brownie points with Jaq - for the last week of the season - I even went clothes shopping with her yesterday!!! (and we're still talking).   Also got lots of reading to catch up on - just finished a wonderful anthology by Charles Rangeley-Wilson which as ever I've reviewed for AN (see below too). Next up will be The Glorious Uncertainty by John Aston - just started it and I'd have to say that so far its even better than his first book (A Dream of Je

I thought my plan was infallible

River Kennet and K&A Canal, Newbury, Saturday 2nd March 2013   You’d be forgiven for think that some of these blogs are getting a bit ‘samey’. You’d be right too, one of reasons is that the two venues I’m fishing are quite close together and spending a couple of hours trotting the river before targeting perch prevents me from arriving at the canal too early. Another reason is that the river venue is producing some very nice grayling and dace, I haven’t got the scales or camera out for them

Chilly day for carp....

But that didn't stop us!! Started at Reepham fishery just after 8:30. The fishery consists of a large square lake that is connected to a "wilder" lake via a channel. The "wild" lake makes for very pleasurable fishing with its many cut backs and reed beds. Plenty of features to fish to. My father, brother and I headed to that lake, getting into a swim large enough for the three of us. We fished simple tackle, waggler set ups on 8lb line. Just using bread or corn and feeding hemp, maggot, corn

its all in the story...

I Pro Staff for a US company that creates and sells ultra light telescopic fishing rods called pen rods; they are basically what got me back into fishing after years and years. (that's another story) All you need to know really is that I test the rods to destruction in the hopes of catching the biggest possible fish I can on them! Currently my biggest is a 17.5lb carp! and that held the world record for a fish caught on these rods for four years! It was then beaten by a fellow fisherman in the

The coldest feet in the south.

27th Feb - K&A Canal & Avington Trout Fishery.   I'll start with a pic of the most vividly marked perch I've ever seen. My workmate caught it on the fly this afternoon. We were just walking back along the lakes with a customer when I spotted a perch right in close. He grabbed the anglers rod that had an apps bloodworm fly attached. The water is gin clear and as the fish was literally 2 ft from the edge so we could see everything. He dropped the fly in, twitched in once to catch the

Got to start somewhere

well; here goes nothing.... ive been fishing for a few years now after a restart... I used to fish a lot as a youngster with my dad and brother and then just sort of gave up over time. Then various things came about and dragged me back to the bankside!   im a simple fisherman; I don't use fancy kit or rigs, I don't enjoy a lot of the newer techniques....id much rather just have a waggler and keep things as simple as possible.   my local area has decent lakes for carp, bream, tench and roach

Big stripeys all round :).

23rd Feb - K&A Canal   Had a call from my Dad around midday to say he was going down the canal and did I want to meet him after work. No way was I refusing so after hurrying the last few anglers off the fishery 10 minutes after closing time I put my foot down and got to the canal with about half an hour of light left.   He'd not had any luck when I arrived, and after we'd walked most of the stretch I've been doing well from, the only action came from me catching a jack and missing a p

River Frome, Wool   0830 - 1500   Cold and overcast - max 2ºC with a raw northerly wind. River high with a little colour (more than the Kennet!) but within its banks (at last!). River Kennet - Nr Newbury   0730 - 1745   Cold and overcast with a raw easterly wind - though thankfully reasonably sheltered on most swims at this venue. Finally done it :).

I've finally bettered my perch pb. After a few close shaves recently, and a lot of effort over the past 2 winters I popped out for a couple of hours tonight and managed 6 perch - 3.03, 2.14, 2.07, 1.8 and a couple of small ones. I also lost a decent pike.   Both the 2 bigger fish where caught from the first area I tried. I had the 1.8 first so persevered and had the 3.03 shortly afterwards before moving15 yards down the bank and casting to the same area, hoping the different angle of retr

A wee dram or two

K&A Canal, Newbury, Sunday 17th February 2013   After Saturday’s drama how could I not revisit the scene? I had plenty of lobs and although the weather wasn’t quite as conducive to perch fishing it was pleasant enough and dusk was sure to come. I was chasing…chasing the fraction of an ounce which prevented Saturday's fish reaching the 3lb mark.   On arrival I met a young lad who told me about a canoe race which had taken place earlier, this might have scattered the fish for a time but I

Scuppered the opportunity I've been waiting for.,

19th Feb, K&A canal:   I got off work at a decent enough time today so decided to stop off at a new stretch for the witching hour (well, half an hour by the time I arrived). I had a tiny perch after a couple of minutes so at least I knew there where some fish about.   I worked my way up the canal, stopping for a few casts in between the many moored barges, willingly staring at my shad every time it came into my own margin. Then it happened, just as I was about to lift the lure out, r

Its been a while (again)

Sunday 17th feb   Finally made it out for my second short session of the year (first was on the k&a and produced a few decent sized brownies).   I had a few hours before work and with the reports of big perch from the canal a couple of hours with the spinning rod would surely bag me a few fish! I arrived at northcroft in high hopes, then realised I couldn't get to the canal from there so the weirpool and little stretch of river it was. After trying a few different lures, spinners, shads

Fairly quiet today.

17th Feb Berkshire lake and various stretches of the K&A   Back out with the lure rod following yesterdays success. I started off in the shop once again, spending more money on lures. I thought lure fishing would cost me a lot less money than carping, but so far it's cost me a fortune.. it's certainly addictive. I'm even thinking of buying a new rod already... I've only used the other one 3 times .   I'd intended on fishing the stretch of canalised river again, but was met with an a
