At least I've seen a 'four'

River Kennet and K&A Canal, Newbury, Saturday 16th February 2013   Quite a contrast to last week’s weather, not exactly balmy but no sleet, no rain and air temps threatening double figures…bliss. The venue(s) were to be different as well, not quite as secluded and maybe less exclusive than last week’s but in terms of fish potential the club stretches I was heading for were just as good, perhaps with the exception of dace and roach.   The initial plan was to meet up with Steve on the Lamb

16 February (part 2)

Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham   1300 - 1730   Mild, overcast with some 'milky' sunshine at times. 10ºC. WT bouncing between 44/45ºF when I arrived rising to 46ºF when I packed up.   1 Perch; 4lb 2oz! (New PB ), 1 Chub; 5lb 10oz.   MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! It is a quest that started in 2005 with an eavesdropped conversation in Tony's tackle emporium when a guy at the till was describing in some detail the capture of a 4lb 11oz perch from the canal while

Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne   0700 - 1100   Overcast with 'milky' sunshine. 2º - 10ºC. WT 41ºF   3 Perch; 1lb 13oz and a couple of smalluns   With the current mild spell well and truely kicking in, Perch we're always going to be on the agenda for this weekend. I couldn't make up my mind though on A; where to fish and B; whether to do a dawn or a dusk session. In the end I decided to do both, Fish both venues I had in mind one at dawn and one at dusk (see 16 February (part 2)) for

What a difference 10 minutes can make.

Sat 16th Feb 13 - Various stretches of the K&A canal:   Well what a days lure fishing I've had. I had planned to fish somewhere around Newbury for the late morning/afternoon before meeting the old man for the evening on a different stretch of the canal.   I actually ended up spending an hour in the tackle shop nattering, which only gave me an hour or so to explore a few bits around the town. I wandered about, having a flick here and there without anything happening before hooking a b

VAC Match 15 - Lakeside Farm - Feb 10th 2013

So it was time for the last match of the Verulam Angling Club championship season.   Going into this match I was in second place in the league. There are 15 matches in the season and your best 10 results count. The leader of the league (AllanB) had 840 points and I was on 795, my lowest counting score was 45 so I knew that if I could win or come second I would go into 1st place as long as Allan did not improve his lowest score of 65, which equates to 8th place.   There were just 14 on this m

The desire is well and truly back..

7th Feb 13, canalised stretch of the Kennet.   I finally managed to get back out with the lure rod. Spare time is at a real premium with my new job and juggling my social life and fishing is proving pretty difficult.   I ventured back to the same stretch once again, largely because most other stretches are all but un-fishable due to the flow and water levels. I walked the entire stretch without finding a swim that I could properly work my baits in until coming to the end of the beat wher

Up to date and back on the rivers.

So here we are, it's the middle of February and things have changed quite significantly for me over the past few months. I've finally got myself a very worthwhile job that I hope to stay in long term. I'm now working at the famous Avington Trout Fishery , and am absolutely loving it, depsite the horrendous weather. It's been a long old struggle since achieving my degree in fishery management and aquaculture some 3-4 years ago, but finally my persistence has paid off.   As I said in the last

A year on.

Well, I've just rediscovered my old blogs after almost a year. I quite enjoyed reading them back and reminiscing over last years successes that have all too quickly become but distant memories.   I found writing about my fishing very rewarding last year.. it enabled me to really appreciate the good's and mill over the bad's from each session. Without writing it down I find it all quite difficult to take in. As much as I'd like other people to hopefully find reading my blurb pleasurable, I a

9th February - River Kennet

As Rusty alluded to in his most recent blog, there would be three reports from the same outing on 9th Febraury….and following on from Chris, this is the last. The reader may think that being the last to be published means it has taken the longest to write and is therefore likely to be a work of literary genius. However…..it probably isn’t.   Being the chief organiser of the day, my plans got off to a very poor start when, less than 24 hours before the meet up time, I found out that we wouldn’t

Middle Kennet Estate   0730 - 1630   Light sleet/drizzle ALL day. 2ºC (ALL day). River high but in its banks (just) and with little colour.   5 Chub; 5lb 8oz, 4lb 9oz, 4lb 5oz, 4lb 0oz, 3lb 10oz. 3 Rainbows to 4lb 7oz, 2 Brownies to 2½lb   A day Paul and I had pencilled in for some time (with very light pencil given current conditions!) and the plan had been to invite Chris & Steve and to target monster dace on another stretch of river. Alas permission

Got there in the end!

River Kennet, Newbury, Saturday 9th February 2013   One of three accounts of the trip   A long awaited visit to this Middle Kennet estate water. Most of the ‘official’ days have been cancelled due to high water levels and I was beginning to wonder whether this season was going to be a total blank as far as this venue is concerned. Paul Goulbourn and Chris Plumb came to the rescue with an invitation via another route (thank you gentlemen), we just had to pray for a relatively dry week. Any ot

A Train to Catch

Angling books are another one of my passions - and my little angling library is not so little these days as the number of books in it creeps towards 200! Over the years I've done a number of reviews for Anglersnet of my favourite ones. I've got ½ dozen or so to catch up on - a legacy of Christmas (and birthday pressies) so there'll be a few more over the coming months. Here is the 1st.   http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/book-and-media-reviews/a_train_to_catch.html   A Train to Cat

2nd Feb 2013: Cold feet!

This saturday saw me eager to get out and and give the old quiver tip a go. Having been prevented from getting out for a little while due to the weather i was hopeful for a good session and had opted to go to a local still water. The night before however it turned bitterly cold and there was a hard frost on the car. I had a feeling this would have a detrimental effect on the fishing and boy was I right.   I packed the gear up, headed down and got set up and tried to remain hopeful. It was that

River Lambourn - Newbury   0900 - 1130   Cool with bright sunshine - breeze picking up throughout the morning. 1º ->4ºC. River 'full' and clear as always, down an inch or so on December levels but still higher than its been for 5 or 6 years.   6 Grayling, a couple of 'pounders' biggest 1lb 5oz. 1 brownie of 1¼lb   Had to nip out to get some bait from Tony's for next weekend's assault on the Kennet (fingers crossed for a dry week), so perfect excuse to spend a couple of hours on the ba

VAC Match 14 - Lakeside Farm - Jan 6th 2013

The second-last club match of the season, usually when the club visits this venue it is very cold and is a hard silverfish match with no carp caught or just the 1 or 2 carp caught on the whole lake, although there are plenty of carp in there.   It was unseasonably mild for the week before so the silvers at least should be feeding ok and perhaps a few carp would show. On the day there was a cold mist which hung around for over half the match.   I drew the near bank and deep water, both my rig

Goodbye snow!

River Kennet, Newbury, Saturday 26th January 2013.   It was nice to get out after a week of me working from home and a boiler working overtime to keep me warm. The said heating device caused a mild panic attack when it failed to do its job one morning. Only after I'd phoned British Gas and several other unavailable heating specialists did I discover that there'd been a power cut overnight and I simply needed to re-set the heating timer. Ever felt stupid?   The venue was a short club stretch

River Kennet - Newbury   0900 - 1130   Bright with rising temps 1º->6ºC. River high and carrying some colour after last nights rain (and the start of the melt). WT 44ºF.   2 doz dace - few chunky ones though nothing particularly impressive. 5 Grayling - 3 of which needed the net but were sub 1lb (though not by much), 3 Roach, a bleak and 2 brownies both 1+lb.   Yet again a weekend where I had a Frome trip pencilled in is thwarted by more rain and a flooded Dorset river, so had to make
