River Kennet - Newbury

2045 - 0000

Warm and overcast - river still has good flow though a little turbid.

2 Dace & a spottie.

Planned to be bankside way earlier - but was seriously delayed getting home. Quick 20 mins trotting followed by 3 hours looking at a mainly stationary rod tip. Had a couple of promising rattles but nothing that developed into anything 'hittable.'

I assume you were after barbel, Chris. I'm encouraged in a way cos I had a crack for Mrs Whiskers at the Rainsford weir pool last night, and also had nothing. Mind you the weir pool has changed with the river having found a way through close to the peg, so the patch of water immediately in front of the peg which used to be almost still but eddying back slowly upstream to the right (and full of fish)now flows through to the left. I found no sign of fish at all apart from minnows, though admittedly there was a time when they were leaping out of the water more dramatically than I have ever seen! This was just 3 ft from the bank. Obvious perch activity, but I guess with minnows, the perch needn't have been any size.

On the way home I was wondering about whether I should limit barbel fishing to when there has been a fair bit of rain, and I thought 'Hmm, I wonder if CP goes barbel fishing on a night like this?'. You have partly answered the question cos I don't think Sunday night was so different to Monday. I think I'll start a thread on when to go barbel fishing, cos I can't remember it being discussed.

Surprised I didn't bump into you John, I was at Rainsford last night introducing a new TAA member to the venue, we were trotting further downstream and left at about 9:00pm.

I had millions of minnows and a couple of dace, Paul was trouted out further upstream but did catch a barbel of about 8oz

Rusty, did you go up or downstream from the bridge? There were 3 people in the first 3 swims upstream of the bridge, all wading. One was probably your good self, and I didn't recognise you through the foliage!
