Bank Holiday Monday, with winds in excess of 40mph but mercifully the accompanying rain gave me the honour of keeping away until I'd finished my session.

Alders is now my favourite lake. You'll have read that last Friday was a day of tentative movements on the bobbin whereas Saturday brought good solid takes. Today was back to finickity. On and off, the bobbin played about all day. Sure, some were line bites, but others had fish playing with the bait for several minutes without taking it properly. I struck early, I struck late, I left well alone - I connected with only a proportion. I switched baits and hook sizes trying to encourage stronger takes to little avail. The method feeder being a self-hooking technique? Pah. I hooked seven in total, I lost one, and the hook link (either 8lb or 10lb) snapped in the middle on three occasions (from different packs, both made by reputable tackle companies). They were all good fish, one possibly very good, but I didn't think I was over-pressurising so felt really hard done by. In the end I made my own links on the bankside and used those.

The three I caught? Well, a 6lb 2 and 3lb 8 bream, but after a beautiful spawn-laden  p.b. Common at 15lb 6.

Another great day, but could/should have been so much better.

Hope you slipped the carp back into Willows - not meant to be any in Alders - club used to have a section 30 to move them back!

Great blogs you two ,think yourselves lucky to be discussing "moving fish" ,two years ago in the close season ,fished Alders six times without even a bite and have not been back since.

Thanks, Imp(!). I'd say give it another go, I know I am. Have you found better success elsewhere?

Not sure I'd recognise it in an identity parade, Chris. Have lost a couple of other big 'uns there lately (big as far as I'm concerned), so hope to be emptying Alders for you in due course!

Thanks, Imp. If I'm honest, I think the close season should be universal, but seeing as it isn't, I'm trying to catch up for 15-odd years missed fishing and am particularly weak-willed, I have kept going. I  like the sound of those 1lb Knotts roach, I was sure they were in there. Being a haunt for the bivvy boys, I suspect 'mere' roach and perch are not often fished for. I've only fished the far eastern end so far (I hear the carpers call it 'crayfish corner') and have always found nice silvers there on float a rod length or two out. Any other recommendations? That grass snake was fab. It was basking pretty much at my feet and didn't know I was there. I slowly managed to stretch for my camera and take the pic until it suddenly sensed me and fled. Can't remember if I included this in the original post, but I got the following snap as it peeled away - on that not so far off evening of record March temperatures - before the ice age returned.

Great pic ty ,I have fished the west bank of palletts for roach as it is sheltered from the south westerlies ,for roach to 12oz but found Knotts' roach in the SE corner about the same size ,then caught the 1lb fish on south bank by island ,the two perch just happy accidents. I have realised it is a carp lake but then it is mainly a carp fishing club ,hence I enjoy yours and Cris' blog .  Good luck and  Roll on June 16th
