The story so far

The Flying Tench

Well here goes with a new blog. I fish the same waters around Newbury to a degee as Chris Plumb and Rusty, so it'll be interesting if it reads like that to anyone else! For various reasons I often only manage to fish short sessions. I'm really a 'pleasure angler' who still likes to catch the occasional pb, even if they are not specimens as such. I fish once a week, normally, on Mondays, and aim to post each week for a while to see how it goes.

After a couple of years with no pbs (beyond a goldfish!) I had a great May with 3 pbs: a 5lb 12oz bream from Jubiliee Lake, a 2lb 3oz eel at Wingham, Kent, and - believe it or not - a 2lb 2oz Rudd from Aquatec, a modestly priced syndicate lake near here.

June/July were taken up with quite a few blanks at Aquatec, and a couple of local barbelling blanks (very short sessions), but I had a great visit to the Wye with 6 barbel in the 6-7lb range.

August and Sept were mainly spent with family hols and a few weeks wasted with a bad back - plus the inevitable one or two failed roach trips (my 'Waterloo') - but then success struck again in October with 2 pb roach (1lb 3oz, and 1lb 9oz) from a south coast commercial fishery. And during the exceptionally mild spell at the end of the month I had 2 great trips spinning on the local canal. Trip one had 5 takes in 7 casts to a bush on the far bank - all perch around 1.5lbs, though 3 of them got off. The next day I blanked at the bush, but went elsewhere and had perch of 2.11, 2.12 and a 5lb chub in virtually successive casts. They constituted lure fishing pbs for both species.

Winter plans? Mainly to better my river roach pb of 1lb 2oz. Nothing else too serious - may try for some perch, dace, grayling where my pbs are 3.3, 6.5oz, 1.0. Will go for chub when all the other species get fed up with me! I do love chub, it's just that somehow I got a pb of 6.9 a few years ago, so it's a harder one to beat!

And yesterdays trip? A visit to the canalised river Kennet (north bank because of quite a strong north wind) where I had been tipped off some good roach had been caught. The air temp was a bit low at 5C, but the water temp was 9C so I thought I had a chance. An hour and a half trotting flake. Zero roach as usual, but a nice 3lb bream saved me from blanking.

Look forward to reading this blog John, some impressive PBs already. Note to self, must do better.
