Another Drive Past Waitrose

River Kennet, Newbury, Saturday 27th February 2010

A follow up visit to Tuesday when I was beaten by the weather and had to abandon some co-operative Chub.

The plan was to buy bait for tomorrow and see how the weather faired on the way to the shop, the rod was in the back of the car just in case. It was very changeable but at the point when the decision had to be made (i.e. buying an extra pint of maggots) there was no wind and the sun was out so off I went.

It was a similar story to Tuesday when the fish appeared to be spread out. I had no joy at the more popular upper stretch so had to go looking for them…and I found them much lower down. Only one at a time but it was pleasing to catch from a couple of new swims.

The first was a Gudgeon….quickly moving on to the second a Chub of 1lb 11oz fell for trotted double red maggot. It was fat and looked in fantastic condition coloured with a definite bronze tint, it didn’t feel particularly chubby when hooked and my first glimpse was when it rolled at my feet. I saw the bright red fins and for a brief moment I thought it was a Roach and got all excited, then the gaping mouth came into view.

No more bites from that swim so I steadily worked my way downstream following the trail of maggots. A few trees have toppled at this venue and they create very slow moving sections directly behind them, meanwhile the other half of the river tears along around the outside of the tree. It was from such a swim that the second Chub came. The float was barely moving and not too far away so I got a good look at the loafer submerging and then darting into the near bank snags. This chap was really punching above his weight and managed to get into some lightweight snags downstream. I couldn’t simply bully him out but by walking down past the snag and letting the line go slack he came out of his own accord, shortly after that he was in the net. Another fish in prime condition and it was really surprising to see the scales only register 2lb 11oz.

The weather then turned and my thoughts turned to tomorrow so I left it at that and drove home a very happy angler. Two hours, three fish and a pint of maggots making their way through Newbury’s waterways.
