One more time (but that's it for a while)

River Kennet, Newbury, Sunday 26th September 2010

Another exasperating day after the chub that appear to be poking their tongues out at me. Well perhaps today wasn’t quite as bad because this time I didn’t see any sign of them in their usual haunt, I’d hatched a plan to get to them as well!

So, enthused by the thought that they must have moved upstream, or at least somewhere more accessible, I headed towards the top of the stretch and got in again. I tried all of the places where I’d either had chubby bites or caught perch but the only species to bend the rod was gudgeon, a reasonable bend for such a small fish mind you. I then tried everywhere I hadn’t had bites or caught anything and I didn’t get bites or catch anything, consistency is my middle name.

With that I implemented the cunning plan, back to just upstream of where I’d seen the chub to roll cheesepaste along the bottom. I couldn’t trot through the trees so I thought I’d try going under them, a couple of SSG to get the bait down and just feel for the bites. After an hour of rolling and feeling for bites the thought that I hadn’t seen the fish there eroded my enthusiasm, I was bored. A float was attached and red maggots were trotted as close to the trees as I could, at least this brought some success with a number of small roach adding to the [none too impressive] tally. When a barbel of no more than eight ounces was landed I felt then that the venue was telling me something, that I should perhaps call it a day. I took heed.

A disappointing day if I’m honest, for such a short stretch you’d think it would be fairly easy to find the fish particularly with the benefit of waders but I’m not finding it so.

Never mind, the colder weather’s here and that means fewer boats on the canal so I might give that a go next weekend.

Haha, so I'm still in Kindergarten. I thought it was a huge gudgeon at first and was ready to grab the camera, from one extreme to the other in seconds :D .
